The recent tendency has been to assume that ge- has little or no semantic force, and work has focused especially on its role in language change and grammaticalization. The Dictionary of Old English (DOE) has now been published up to the letter I, and it scrupulously distinguishes simple and prefixed forms. In this study, I set about comparing the entries for simple and ge- prefixed verbs in the DOE, with the goal of answering the question of whether ge- has any detectable semantic force. My results are organized into three categories: instances where the use of ge- seems to reflect a difference in meaning; those where it seems to correlate with particular types of verbal action; and those where it may correspond with lexical aspect. This study is thus an example of how the extensive work done by the DOE might be used more further work on semantics, morphology, and lexical aspect.","PeriodicalId":43263,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA NEOPHILOLOGICA","volume":"94 1","pages":"87 - 104"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2022-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46547654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, to date the adverb practically has not been the object of a great deal of discussion. Here we will show how this adverb has followed a line of development similar to that of other –ly adverbs, and hence emerges as a manner adverb with the meaning ‘in a practical manner’, ‘in practice’ (frequently opposed to ‘theoretically’ or ‘speculatively’), before evolving into a degree modifier of the approximating type with the meaning ‘almost’, ‘in effect’, ‘nearly’. This paper seeks to contribute to the history of practically by examining its process of subjectification (cf. Traugott 1995; Swan 1997), using a corpus–based methodology. To this end, the Corpus of Late Modern English Texts, version 3.0 (De Smet, Diller & Tyrkkö 2013) has been used, supplemented with additional evidence from the Old Bailey Corpus, version 2.0 (Huber, Nissel & Puga 2016a; 2016b).","PeriodicalId":43263,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA NEOPHILOLOGICA","volume":"95 1","pages":"63 - 81"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2021-12-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41801816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One form of relativisation is that sort of relative clause in which we directly relate one concept through another concept. The present study identifies and classifies such relativisation as BE-relativisations, and shows the extent to which this sort of relativisation significantly draws on the cognitive abilities of both the speakers and the listeners. Framed within broad theoretical tools in cognitive construction grammar, the study argues that noun phrases (NPs) in BE-relativisation cognitively function as NP1 & NP2. It is shown that these NPs, though lexically independent, are cognitively interdependent for processing purposes. The study further shows that listeners often unconsciously cooperate with speakers in processing different concepts in BE-relativisation. For instance, it is shown that conceptualising NP1 the guys is conceptually the same as NP2 my students in ‘The guys who were my students won the competition’. Drawing on corpus evidence from interference-driven Nigerian and syntactically developed Canadian Englishes, the study shows that BE-relativisations are essentially cognitive-driven, regardless of sociolinguistic background of the speakers/listerners. Among other observations, the study attests scarcity of BE-relativisation and a similar pattern of cognitive activation and cooperation in BE-relativisations found in both varieties of English.","PeriodicalId":43263,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA NEOPHILOLOGICA","volume":"95 1","pages":"127 - 145"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2021-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41651897","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Linguistic methods used here have been successfully applied to manuscripts of another company: the Mercers of London. The new findings, first, confirm that the earlier the account was recorded, the more present Latin and French are, whereas the later the account was kept, the more present English is; however, second, they reveal an unnoticed period of code-switching into Latin and French before English monolingualism, whose evolution stages seem to occur in reverse order.","PeriodicalId":43263,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA NEOPHILOLOGICA","volume":"95 1","pages":"19 - 46"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2021-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44859553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By implementing a collostructional analysis, specifically collexeme analysis and multiple distinctive collexeme analysis, we aim at uncovering how, with respect to different genres in COCA (Corpus of Contemporary American English), modal expressions are significantly attracted or repelled by the grammatical pattern, and how these expressions are diachronically associated with the grammatical pattern in different time periods of COCA and COHA (Corpus of Historical American English). The genre-related findings demonstrate that explicit objective modal expressions of probability and obligation are attracted by formal genres while repelled by informal ones, whereas those of usuality are repelled by both formal academic and informal spoken genres. The diachronic findings demonstrate that modal expressions that denote low values of probability and obligation have undergone a path of gradual change from repulsion to attraction because of an accumulation of negotiability and politeness by language users.","PeriodicalId":43263,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA NEOPHILOLOGICA","volume":"95 1","pages":"100 - 126"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2021-11-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49428762","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Halfon’s travel writings to Poland are thus interpreted according to the host (Polish) culture’s values and needs. First, the study concentrates on how Halfon’s travel accounts to Warsaw question and interact with the changing historical narratives about the Poles as “implicated subjects”, witnesses and accomplices in the Shoah. Secondly, the analysis deals with the Halfon’s narrative experiences in the provincial city of Lodz, his grandfather’s birthplace, where the crystalized discourses about the past are altered by inverting roles of victims and perpetrators and introducing other possible interpretative approaches (based on cultural implication of emotions and theories of the gaze).","PeriodicalId":43263,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA NEOPHILOLOGICA","volume":"94 1","pages":"365 - 390"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2021-10-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44575422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An examination of the most widely spoken substrates in each variety does not seem to explain the different tendencies in the distribution of finite and nonfinite complementation patterns across varieties, since English varieties with different complementation systems in their substrate languages, Kenyan English and Nigerian English, for example, show similar distributions in their use of English complementation. Such differences in the distribution seem to be the result of other factors playing an essential role in language contact situations, namely, the tendency towards transparency in second language varieties, the geographical proximity of the English varieties, and the evolution of the varieties measured in terms of the Dynamic Model (Schneider 2007).","PeriodicalId":43263,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA NEOPHILOLOGICA","volume":"95 1","pages":"146 - 169"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2021-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44718381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nos proponemos realizar un análisis contrastivo entre los versos de partida y sus versiones españolas y gallegas para averiguar si la organización estilístico-formal de esta obra se ha conservado en los textos de llegada. Nuestro estudio se basará en la idea de la lectura -y también la traducción- de textos líricos como una operación creativa que activa los círculos semánticos y así propicia una comprensión más eficaz de lo encontrado en los versos de partida. Asimismo, se tomará como punto de partida la teoría de Edward de Bono sobre el “pensamiento lateral”, un modo de razonamiento imaginativo y anárquico que dicta la organización funcional del cerebro que determina los hábitos de pensar. Todo ello nos permitirá reconocer que el estimular en los traductores del desarrollo de su potencial recreativo para verter los versos polacos ha posibilitado al receptor experimentar las cualidades de la realidad de partida y que la intencionalidad estética de las representaciones originales puede funcionar en los contextos meta con una potencia análoga.","PeriodicalId":43263,"journal":{"name":"STUDIA NEOPHILOLOGICA","volume":"94 1","pages":"14 - 31"},"PeriodicalIF":0.4,"publicationDate":"2021-10-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45580035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
