The device is designed for the precise guidance of machines with respect to a reference laser plane in large working areas. The 1D detector has a measurement range of 1 [m] and, with the present implementation, a position measurement standard deviation of s <; ±0.6 [mm] in a 95% confidence interval. With this length it is orders of magnitude larger than all presently available position sensitive detectors. The instrument is based on a multi-camera image processing concept. An aluminum bar serves as the target for the laser. The target's surface is specially prepared to ensure optimal scattering of the laser light. Presently, four cameras with overlapping fields of view are deployed to observe the scattered light. Additional optical components reduce the susceptibility to extraneous light sources. Each camera is calibrated using Gram polynomials and the data from the four cameras is fused to give a consistent measurement over the complete measurement range. The linear nature of the computation's algebraic framework offers the advantage that the error propagation can be computed analytically. Weighted polynomial approximation determines the calibration coefficients and weighted polynomial interpolation is used to determine the measurement results. Complete testing of the instrument is presented, whereby cross validation ensures the correct determination of errors. A Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is performed to determine the statistical nature of the measurement errors.","PeriodicalId":432388,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114282426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper introduces the design of a capacitive electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor that measures heart rate with no conscious effort from the user. The sensor consists of two active electrodes and an analog processing circuit that is low cost and customizable to the surfaces of common household objects. Prototype testing was performed in a home laboratory by embedding the sensor into a couch, walker, office and dining chairs. The sensor produced highly accurate heart rate measurements (<; 2.3% error) via either direct skin contact or through one and two layers of clothing. The sensor requires no gel dielectric and no grounding electrode, making it particularly suited to the “zero-effort” nature of an autonomous smart home environment. Motion artifacts caused by deviations in body contact with the electrodes were identified as the largest source of unreliability in continuous ECG measurements and will be a primary focus in the next phase of this project.","PeriodicalId":432388,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131465037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The major problems of using existing RFID antennas at UHF band for transcutaneous operation include possible interference with pacemakers and interference with other RFID systems working at the same band. To provide a solution for the above problems, this paper uses transcutaneous near field communication (TNFC) technology based on capacitive coupling between the reader and the tag. The reader and tag both have two electrodes and the energy and signal transmission occurs with the coupling between the electrodes. Both the reader and the tag are impedance matched for maximum power transmission efficiency. A reading range of 4.1 cm is achieved through pork skin using 30 dBm power from the reader. The proposed UHF RFID system is a feasible solution to provide high efficiency for transcutaneous operation while can eliminate an interference with other medical devices or RFID devices.","PeriodicalId":432388,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC)","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127726022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The precision of an ultrasonic heat meter depends on two aspects: the accuracy of time measurement and the relationship of average velocity detected between the two ultrasonic transducers and the inlet average velocity of the pipe (here is a factor k standing for it). Different mass fluxes lead to different situations of the flow field, which means that factor k varies with Reynolds number. In this paper, Z-path is designed to avoid blocking in the pipes. Lager Eddy Simulation (LES) model is used to calculate the flow field of the transition region in the CFD numerical simulation and a regular pattern of this Z-path heat meter is proposed from the simulation results. The TDC-GP21 chip is adopted to offer precise time measurement and experimental results in laboratory show that this kind of ultrasonic heat meters provide high measuring precision and are advantageous to apply in civil use.","PeriodicalId":432388,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC)","volume":"294 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132529953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed method uses image processing, particle filtering, and motion coherence to group particles in videos, forming convex shapes that are analyzed for potential vehicles. This analysis takes into consideration the convex shape of the objects and background information to merge or split the groupings. After a vehicle is identified, it is tracked using the similarity of color histograms on windows centered at the particle locations.","PeriodicalId":432388,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC)","volume":"6 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131922470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, operation of the LLA in a shielded, semi-anechoic chamber is considered, including the calibration/verification of the loop using the folded-dipole verification source described in the standard CISPR 16-2-3. The LLA is characterized experimentally in a typical 3-m semi-anechoic chamber using the folded-dipole validation source specified in the CISPR 16-2-3 standard. It is shown that the response of the LLA is slightly affected by the presence of the chamber, but nevertheless provides accurate measurement of magnetic dipole moment over a very broad frequency range. Specifically, the LLA described here meets the accuracy requirements of the CISPR 162-3 standard over the frequency range of 9 kHz to 30 MHz when operating inside a shielded semi-anechoic chamber of dimensions 9 m (length) x 6 m (width) × 5.4 m (height). It can be concluded that the LLA can be used effectively in a typical shielded semi-anechoic chamber.","PeriodicalId":432388,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130320808","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The outcome of this study is two-fold: 1.) An improved understanding of the radar scattering components of automobiles, which informs the design of surrogate test targets for evaluating automotive pre-collision system (PCS) radars, and 2.) statistical models for evaluating surrogate targets and characterizing target models for PCS radar system designs. We examined the validity of two-parameter distribution models applied to measurements of subject vehicle's radar cross-section (RCS) and found the Weibull distribution to be the best fit. In evaluating the goodness-of-fit of the Weibull distribution model, using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, we deem an acceptable fit between the model and the measured RCS data for our intended project outcome.","PeriodicalId":432388,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115154242","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The tech products for entertainment create huge competition in the modern market, with the front runners such as PS3, Wii, and Xbox. Body movement games are a favorite among gamers. However most of the body movement is restricted to the hand portion for the handheld platform, making it not as dynamic as the traditional television consoles. Thus, this restriction decreases the multitude and availability of entertainment in handheld devices. For this reason, this research presented a ubiquitous motion sensing service with Smart Shoe as a body movement controller for handheld devices, and designs a Step Direction algorithm to determine the direction and motion state of feet during exercising. Using wireless transmission to transmit messages to handheld smart phone applications, a body movement rhythmic dance game is presented for this device, which receives the feet stepping signal as input for the game. It also provides a health exercise service, using the motion state to calculate burnt calories. The user can also observe their health state at any time, letting users to enjoy ubiquitous multifunctional entertainment anywhere outdoors.","PeriodicalId":432388,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC)","volume":"180 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123190891","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dispersions of SWCNT-DSPE-PEG at various concentrations were injected directly into 22 tumors. Dielectric properties (1-6 GHz) before and after the injection were characterized using an open-ended coaxial probe technique. Baseline measurements (sham control and PEG only) were also conducted in 12 tumors. We found at least a ~10% relative permittivity enhancement effect upon injection of 100 μl of SWCNT stock solutions at concentrations ranging between 3 and 7 mg/ml.","PeriodicalId":432388,"journal":{"name":"2013 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124443725","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
