The addition of a digital road map allows to locate the vehicle continuously and helps the driver to get the best path. These systems are usually enhanced with dead reckoning sensors due to GPS outages in urban areas especially. For instance, the odometer sensors can be used to correct the vehicle location in this case. We present here a global estimation method to solve the fusion problem of the GPS, odometer and digital road map measurements in presence of GPS outages. It relies on a hybrid filter which takes advantage of the combination of a Kalman filter which computes the linear part of the state equations and a particle filter to provide an optimal resolution scheme. When GPS fails, the filter fuses all available pseudo-range measures to improve the vehicle positioning. In the case of an urban transport scenario, the results show that the number of particles is significantly reduced to achieve the same performance of a single particle filter in terms of accuracy. Moreover, software solutions can be developed for real-time applications","PeriodicalId":431033,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Conference on Computational Intelligence for Measurement Systems and Applications","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124375058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Fuzzy Control of an Inverted Pendulum using AC Induction Motor Actuator","authors":"H. Marzi","doi":"10.1109/CIMSA.2006.250767","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/CIMSA.2006.250767","url":null,"abstract":"It has been proven that fuzzy controllers are capable of controlling non-linear systems where it is cumbersome to develop conventional controllers based on mathematical modeling. This article describes designing fuzzy controllers for an inverted pendulum. It compares performance of two controllers designed based on Mamdani and Takagi-Sugeno in a short track length, following a high disturbance. The work then focuses on the AC electrical motor that produces the torque required for the horizontal movements of the inverted pendulum. A simplified control model for the AC motor is used which includes the motor's time constant as the crucial parameter in producing rapid responses to the disturbances. In the currently modeling of fuzzy controllers for the inverted pendulum, the input to the pendulum block is a torque. This torque is produced by an electrical motor which is not included in the model. A disadvantage in this modeling is that the electrical motor dynamics is not built-in in the control system independently. Here, a simplified model of an AC electrical motor is incorporated to the system. The electrical motor receives its inputs as current or voltage and produces a torque as output to control the balance of the inverted pendulum. The new approach in modeling a fuzzy control system assists in 1) examining use of AC motors in producing rapid response, 2) selecting sensitive parameters for an optimum high performance electrical motor capable to stabilize the inverted pendulum system and 3) designing a Takagi-Sugeno type fuzzy controller","PeriodicalId":431033,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Conference on Computational Intelligence for Measurement Systems and Applications","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128919917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method is implemented through a general regression neural network (GRNN) that estimates the PSD from the ELS measurement carried out at several angles together with the average diameters of the PSD predicted by the DLS measurement at the same angles. The GRNN was trained with several measurements simulated on the basis of typical asymmetric PSDs. The ability of the trained GRNN was tested on the basis of two synthetic examples. The estimated PSDs are more accurate than those obtained through standard numerical techniques for `ill-conditioned' inverse problems","PeriodicalId":431033,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Conference on Computational Intelligence for Measurement Systems and Applications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130879129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The defect detection of particle boards requires the identification of all the printed and natural wood defects that can occur. The availability of information about the particle board to inspect (e.g. the pattern used to print the surface of the board) could increase heavily the defect detection capability of a quality assessment system. Nevertheless, most of the times the pattern is not available during the defect detection phase (i.e. when the pattern changes quickly or when printing and defect detection are not performed by the same company). We propose a novel approach for pattern extraction based on genetic techniques to identify the printing pattern that can be used in defect classification systems. Experimental results show the valuable pattern extraction capabilities of the proposed approach","PeriodicalId":431033,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Conference on Computational Intelligence for Measurement Systems and Applications","volume":"157 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114454773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Commercial networks limit user access bandwidth, either physically or logically. However, in research networks there are no individual bandwidth restrictions, since this would interfere with research tasks. User behavior in research networks has changed radically with the advent of p2p multimedia file transfers: many users take advantage of the huge bandwidth, e.g. compared to domestic DSL access to exchange movies and the like. This behavior may have a deep impact on research network utilization. Consequently, in the framework of the MOLDEIP project, we have proposed to apply support vector machine detection to identify those activities in high-performance research network routers. The results in this paper suggest that support vector machine detection of p2p traffic in high-performance routers is highly successful and outperforms recent approaches like 1","PeriodicalId":431033,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Conference on Computational Intelligence for Measurement Systems and Applications","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128565780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their operation is based on intelligent techniques for image understanding, followed by robust quantification of the detected phenomenon. A well-known application area is movement detection and isolation. This paper discusses how movement can be detected and quantified by means of a single cellular neural network, implemented as a network-on-chip and realized on a field-programmable gate-array. The designed genetic algorithm path planner was shown to accomplish this task and produce superior results when compared against a full search path planner. Next, it was shown that the choice of search parameters for the genetic algorithm effected the time to execute the search and the quality of the solution (length of the chosen path). Having proven the genetic algorithm path planner in simulation, the genetic algorithm path planner then successfully guided an actual X80 mobile robot to all its waypoints without colliding with any obstacles in a test environment","PeriodicalId":431033,"journal":{"name":"2006 IEEE International Conference on Computational Intelligence for Measurement Systems and Applications","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-07-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134344868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By an embedded computational intelligence technique, the instrument can acquire and test data according to available information. The projected system consists in a smart Web-sensor sensing the electromagnetic field exposure levels. The sensor equipment includes an isotropic magnetic field transducer, a GPRS modem, a DSP platform and an interface display. In details, the realized measurement system is able to process acquired signals by performing mathematical algorithms in order to verify the conformity with the law exposure limits and to characterize possible alarm occurrences. The data processing stage is qualified by a further power-spectrum analysis, that allows to get information in the frequency domain on the electromagnetic field spectral components.
