The newspaper printed a portrait of a man suffering from a grisly tumor in late October 1904 and claimed that vaccines caused his ailment.8 The newspaper explained that vaccines were the, \"monster that pollutes the pure and innocent blood of our children with the vile excretions expelled from sick animals, of a nature that contaminates the system of any living being. \"9 This newspaper article argued that it was providing the public with the \"information\" it needed to evaluate the government's mandates.10 It is an example of coordinated efforts to spread mis/disinformation by the press as part of the effort to create a public campaign against Alves' public health policy. Uprisings, which were also taking place in the industrial workers' neighborhoods and the Afro-Brazilian districts with fierce hand-to-hand combat, were eventually put down and citizens were pressured to retreat by the army advancing by land and the threat of bombardment by the navy docked just offshore.11 The state used repressive measures (imprisonment, beatings, interrogation, and internal exile) and put the instigators, including Senator Lauro Sodré and military officers, on trial following the uprising.12 The government declared a \"state of siege\" and the uprising was controlled in three days.13 However, although the government had survived the assault, the Alves administration was forced to abandon its vaccine mandate and smallpox continued to plague the country for several more years, slowing plans to modernize.","PeriodicalId":42938,"journal":{"name":"South Central Review","volume":"39 1","pages":"1 - 15"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42628432","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Only two months were enough to separate a \"before\" from an \"after,\" a before of more than twenty-five years during which the questioning of French policy in Rwanda between 1990 and 1994 was met with denials by the majority of political and military actors of the time, and sometimes by a large part of the media. By finally making official a discourse of truth, the Duclert Report opened a decisive breach; by taking it up in Kigali, the President of the Republic institutionalized it, somewhat as Jacques Chirac had done in July 1995 in his famous Vel d'Hiv speech on the role of Vichy in the deportation and extermination of French Jews.","PeriodicalId":42938,"journal":{"name":"South Central Review","volume":"39 1","pages":"69 - 75"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45676188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Bakunin sauna, Sanguinetti highlights a revolutionary cycle focused on an opposition between anarchy and transnational corporate culture, which is characterized in the play as another form of colonization and denial. In the play, a group of three octogenarians (Rosa, Margarita, and Bernardo), who are former IBM employees, seek to kidnap current IBM executive, Ema, with the help of Mijaíl Bakunin, who is mechanically reproduced as a robot powered by artificial intelligence. While Sanguinetti's play revives Bakunin's ideology in an embodied form on the contemporary stage, it also invokes references to both past and current experiments with social anarchism, as well as other left-leaning political movements. Through Bakunin sauna, audiences see how denial was a foundational aspect of colonization and global economic hegemony through empire building, and see how it continues through networks of transnational power held by global corporations in contemporary settings. Spectators also witness the unfulfilled promises of revolution as movements fracture and splinter.","PeriodicalId":42938,"journal":{"name":"South Central Review","volume":"39 1","pages":"140 - 159"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47397683","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The story of Danielle Nicole Mboume, as portrayed in her autobiographical novel La única esperanza (The Only Hope), provides a case study to problematize the idea of same-sex sexual practices in Cameroon and Sub-Sahara in general. I argue that the tendency to silence same-sex acts is the result of a collective denial of the evidence that same-sex sexual practices are an historical part of some traditional Cameroonian and African societies. The denial, based on the myth of homosexuality as \"un-African,\" is accentuated by colonial and postcolonial forces. The denial is not divorced from its negative consequences on the victims who are suffering from family, social ostracism and death sentences. Ironically, the idea of same-sex acts also serves as a powerful political weapon against the members of the regime in power, responsible for criminalizing homosexual behavior.","PeriodicalId":42938,"journal":{"name":"South Central Review","volume":"39 1","pages":"121 - 139"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46336897","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One chapter from this section points out the differential nature of graphic novels and literary novels which is also another specific dimension the anthology considers to present. Its history spans approximately 150 years, from the post-Civil War period through the present. The Sugar Land 95 are people whose brutalized remains were exhumed on the grounds of the former Imperial Sugar plantation in Sugar Land, Texas, while excavating the land for a new vocational public school. They are 94 men and one woman between the ages of 14 and 70, incarcerated African-Americans who died gruesomely between 1878 and 1911, laboring as convicts leased from the Texas state prison system. Convict leasing was an early pillar of the prison industrial complex. The Sugar Land 95 is a story of white supremacist brutality, erasure, and ongoing denial, a set of truths that would have been whitewashed in the here and now were it not for the persistent efforts at the grassroots to force a reckoning.","PeriodicalId":42938,"journal":{"name":"South Central Review","volume":"39 1","pages":"16 - 29"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42404479","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The typology will analyze denialism as manifested in great power competition, driven by economics and business interests, motivated by political ideology and populist movements, caused by national security imperatives, and compromised by politicized science. The article also examines the use by China and Russia of social media such as Twitter to create \"epistemological chaos\" in the industrialized democracies about COVID-19 to further their strategic goals and undermine public confidence in science and technology. Finally, the article concludes with some thoughts on how the social media has replaced traditional news media as a source of information for the public generally, but specifically how it has distorted the public's information about the pandemic and vaccines developed to protect against COVID.","PeriodicalId":42938,"journal":{"name":"South Central Review","volume":"39 1","pages":"116 - 95"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48154312","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike Holocaust deniers, people and institutions engaging in Holocaust distortion do not deny the factuality of the Jewish catastrophe. They just deny that their nation, or their ethnic group had anything to do with the fact. During the last few years, Holocaust distortion has become an unstated policy of the Polish state.
