Most people believe that pediatric pathology is an unnecessary subspecialty and every ordinary pathologist can easily evaluate the pediatric materials. Indeed, neither pediatric pathology is a limited field of pathology, nor pediatric pathologist is a “holidaymaker” who is examining lesser number of materials. On the contrary; the human development passes through very dynamic dynamic processes from a zygotic phase to late adolescence stages and pediatric pathology is a very complex subspecialty requiring a broad knowledge of normal and pathologic mechanisms that vary through various phases of development. In summary, the pediatric pathologist must have a special knowledge of obstetric, gynecology, embryology, genetics, nephrology, neurology, oncology, dermatology, metabolic disorders, infectious diseases, forensic medicine, and child abuse and so on. Technical and scientific equipments are necessary factors in pediatric pathology, as they are in every other field of pathology. But if the material is evaluated separately from the story and dreams, from the past and future of the child and if a rapport between pediatric pathologist and clinician can not be established, then pathological diagnosis will be doubtful.","PeriodicalId":428200,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Dr. Behcet Uz Children's Hospital","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115012413","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method: Two hundred and four patients followed up with the diagnosis of ARF, between December 2004 and April 2009, were reviewed retrospectively from archive files. Findings: Study population consisted of female (46.5%), and male (53.5%) aith a mean age of 10.3±2.8 years and a mean follow-up period of 26.8±13.3 months. The majority of the patients were between the ages of 6-15. The patients consulted to the hospital most frequently in winter and spring months. While the most common presenting symptom was joint findings, while the most rarely detected presenting symptom was the presence of subcutaneous nodules. The most common major, and minor findings were carditis (82.2%) and fever (28.9%), respectively. The frequency of minor criteria of fever and arthralgia associated with carditis was found to be significantly higher than those associated with other major findings (p<0.05). Frequency of cardiac murmur, cardiomegaly and tachycardia increased when the grade of carditis increased (p<0.05). The frequency of minor criteria of fever, leukocytosis, elevated CRP levels associated with arthritis was found to be significantly higher than that of associated with the other major findings (p<0,05). Artritis and chorea were not seen concurrently in any of the patients. CRP increment was rarely seen in patients with chorea which was found to be statistically significant (p<0,05). Most commonly mitral valve was involved. During the follow up, reactivation was seen in 18,8% of the patients, and 50% of these patients did not comply with the secondary preventive treatment properly. Reactivation occurred in 11% of the patients under proper secondary preventive treatment (p<0,05). Conclusion: Acute rheumatic fever is still the most common acquired cardiologic disease in underdeveloped and developing countries despite its decreasing importance and disease frequency in developed countries.","PeriodicalId":428200,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Dr. Behcet Uz Children's Hospital","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131725430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In children relationship between the most common urinary incontinence problem ie. nocturnal enuresis and obesity is not clear. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis and obesity. Methods: Between October 2012 and December 2012, 150 children aged 5-15 years with primary monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis brought to urology clinic by parents and equal number of healthy controls within the same age group were included in the study. Both groups were compared in terms of age, gender, school achievement, socioeconomic status, family history, sleep depth, and body mass index (BMI). Also in the nocturnal enuresis group, whether obesity has an impact on above factors and the number of monthly urinary incontinence are investigated. Results: Results in terms of male sex, sleep depth, presence of a family history of nocturnal enuresis group were more significant when compared with the control group (p=0.03, p=0.00, and p=0.00, respectively). There were no significant differences between groups in terms of school success, socioeconomic status, and BMI (p=0.3, p=0.8, and p=0.4, respectively). Distrubition of parametres identified as a risk factor according to body mass index were made and there was no difference between them. Distributions of frequency of urinary incontinence in enuretic patients according to body mass indices were made and a significant difference was not observed. There was no effect of obesity on monthly frequency of urinary incontinence. Conclusion: In our study any correlation between monosymptomatic enuresis nocturna, and obesity was not observed.Studies indicating that obesity is associated with nocturnal enuresis could not clearly reveal the presence of a cause and effect relationship. This relationship set forth in many studies may be due to daytime symptoms. Therefore, further study is needed in this regard.","PeriodicalId":428200,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Dr. Behcet Uz Children's Hospital","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129812404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: The charts of patients who underwent probing for congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction between 2010 and 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients’ ages at the time of probing, the presence of watering complaints and epiphoras, and fluorescein dye disappearance test results after the procedure were recorded. Postoperative followup, safety and efficacy were evaluated according to age groups. Results: Eighty-four patients (46 girls (55.0%), and 38 boys (45.0%) diagnosed as congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction were included in the study. The mean age of patients was 16.4 months (12-34 month) and mean followup period was 10.4 months (6-18 months). Forty-six patients were between 12 and 24 months, and 38 patients were over 24 months. By probing, success was achieved in 78 of 105 eyes (74.3%). According to the age groups, success rate of probing was 86.7% (52 of 60 eyes) in patients between 12-24 months and 57.7% (26 eyes of 45 patients) in those over 24 months. No complications were noted during follow-up. Conclusion: Probing is an effective treatment for congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction in cases not improving with conservative treatment in the early age group. Method: The study population of this descriptive research consists of the mothers that have infants (0-1 year of age), resident in an area of a family health center within the boundaries of the Province of Erzurum, and 397 mothers, who had been selected by simple random sampling method and had accepted to participate in the research. Data were collected in June-September 2013 through a questionnaire prepared based on the literature. Percentiles and averages were applied to analyze the data. Ethical principles were applied. Results: Mothers’ perceptions of risk on GMOs was high, but their level of knowledge was low. Mothers do not want to use GMO products in children’s nutrition and consider that these products are likely to have harmful effects in children’s nutrition. In addition, the majority of mothers stated that they would not purchase these products. Conclusion: Training events should be organized to eliminate the lack of knowledge and to increase awareness of mothers about the issue. It is not possible to draw a harm or benefit conclusion regarding the issue for the moment. However, minimization of the risks that will possibly affect our environment and the future generations, and taking the necessary measures should not be ignored.","PeriodicalId":428200,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Dr. Behcet Uz Children's Hospital","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126742789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
