Such dense deployments pose an important challenge for scaling throughput proportional to the number of cells, since inter-cell interference becomes a key bottleneck for achieving high capacity. We examine key design issues around the use of coordinated beamforming (CBF) strategies for mitigating inter-small-cell interference in such clustered layouts. In particular, we show that system planning of the sounding reference signal (SRS), along with multi-user channel estimation approaches, are critical to realize the benefits of CBF. We also develop key notions of beneficiary sets and co-operative clusters for enabling such interference mitigation in cellular networks. Through extensive and detailed system simulations, we showcase the benefits of the proposed system designs for two use cases: (1) a dense urban Micro-cellular deployment, and (2) a clustered small-cell Stadium deployment. System parameter optimization of SRS power control and co-operative cluster size are also developed. Significant capacity gains are observed for both these deployments using the proposed system design in clustered small-cell topologies.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124137199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it may not always be feasible to provide low-latency reliable communication between end-users due to the nature of mobility. For instance, the latency could be increased when several controlling nodes have to exchange D2D related information among each other. Moreover, the introduced signaling overhead due to D2D operation need to be minimized. Therefore, in this paper, we propose several mobility management solutions with their technical challenges and expected gains under the assumptions of 5G small cell networks.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132489866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) - consisting of a deployment of a variety of different types of small cells in a cellular infrastructure - is one manifestation of that approach. In this HetNet case, Radio Resource Management (RRM) techniques are important to balance and optimize the radio resource allocation among users of different systems by avoiding or controlling the generated interference. This paper provides a concise description of the role of RRM techniques in HetNets by analyzing the criteria and tradeoffs that are assumed, and presents a framework for the exploitation of the available context information within the HetNet environment, that leads to optimized spectrum usage.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114479414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a novel algorithm that combines the knowledge of the users' positions with a Q-learning and game-theoretic approaches to enhance the dynamic physical resource allocation during carrier aggregation (CA) in a semi-and uncoordinated deployment of Heterogeneous Networks (HetNet). The algorithm is evaluated through MATLAB simulation setup and in terms of macro-and pico- cell and user throughputs. It has been shown that regardless of the approach chosen for physical resource assignment, positioning information increases the system and user performances. Use of Q-learning and positioning information leads to increased cell throughput without degrading the user experience. Application of a game theoretic approach for resource assignment leads to increased fairness for both macro-and pico- users.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114352972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed approach exploits social relationships between user equipments (UEs) and their physical proximity to optimize the network throughput. We formulate the problem as a matching game between UEs and their serving nodes (SNs). In our proposed game, the serving node can be a small cell base station (SCBS) or an important node with device-to-device capabilities. In this game, the SCBSs and UEs maximize their respective utility functions capturing both the spatial and social structures of the network. We show that the proposed game belongs to the class of matching games with externalities. Subsequently, we propose a distributed algorithm using which the SCBSs and UEs interact and reach a stable matching. We show the convergence of the proposed algorithm and study the properties of the resulting matching. Simulation results show that the proposed socially-aware user association approach can efficiently offload traffic while yielding a significant gain reaching up to 63% in terms of data rates as compared to the classical (social-unaware) approach.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130572369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research assumes a combination of M2M applications to evaluate the performance of Radio Access Network (RAN) under machines overload in a cellular network. We analyze the performance of M2M devices in the Random Access Channel (RACH) in a macro-cell environment at Bristol city, United Kingdom. Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) level for each device is calculated depending on the path loss (PL) model generated by a propagation modeling tool. Also, we consider the limited resources in the Physical Downlink Control Channel (PDCCH). Different performance metrics are investigated such as the preamble collision probability, the idle probability, and the success probability. The probability of average preamble transmission time, probability of access success, and average access delay are examined. In addition, we analyze the effect of a number of system parameters on the M2M device performance.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132966049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To accomplish this goal, various interference mitigation techniques have been proposed. Contrary to conventional techniques, a rate splitting technique splits the interference in a way that part of the interference can be canceled at users through base station coordination. Rate splitting has been shown to have potential to achieve the channel capacity. This paper studies the benefits of the rate splitting scheme and proposes a new inter-cell codeword cancellation scheme for 3GPP LTE-A and beyond. Simulation results for interference-limited LTE-A scenarios show that the inter-cell codeword cancellation can be a very attractive interference coordination scheme due to its low complexity, low overhead and superior performance.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122394180","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With self-configuration and self-optimization functionalities of self-organization networks (SONs), femtocells can minimize the impact on macro cellular network by adapting transmit power according to surrounding environment. In this paper, we propose a novel self-optimization mechanism for femtocell, which can improve indoor coverage and promote energy efficiency of networks. It allows a femtocell to compare its distance from UE with a threshold (virtual cell size) periodically and turn on or off radio transmission accordingly.
