However, while underlying cellular networks they can negatively affect the performance of cellular communications when intra-cell spectrum sharing is enabled. The impact of D2D communications is not only seen on the cellular throughput, but also on the decision-making of the cellular scheduling policy. In this paper, we provide an impact assessment of D2D communications on the performance of Proportional Fair (PF) scheduling for a Long Term Evolution (LTE) multi-cell scenario through system-level simulations. Results show that due to excessive interference generated by D2D communications and depending on the accuracy of the link quality measure used to estimate the instantaneous data rate, a PF cellular scheduling policy may get stuck in an infinite loop and continuously selects the same User Equipments (UEs), which reduces the cellular throughput, or even approaches the performance of a Maximum Rate (MR)-based policy, thus affecting service coverage and fairness.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124087203","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Active Antenna Systems (AAS) are gaining wide interest recently for their agile ability to electronically adjust the beam in the optimum direction based on operators' QoS interests. In our previous work, we had proposed a novel technique for centralized self-optimization using an iterative modeling and optimization framework called as “surrogate-based optimization”. This framework involves: 1-the use of a stochastic model which can be used “as a surrogate” (i.e. to replace) the functional relationships between the network parameters and Key Performance Indicators (KPI), and 2-a subsequent use of a pattern search algorithm as an optimization process, in an iterative manner. In this work, we propose to use the surrogate-based framework for optimization of antenna tilts in Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-A) networks and compare optimization results of several capacity based objectives. Results using a flow level network simulator reveals the need to jointly optimize multi-capacity-objectives in a centralized manner apart from demonstrating the superiority of the iterative self-optimization methodology in terms of fast convergence, adaptivity and flexibility.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122140823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider a realistic, large-scale LTE network in which users can download/upload data using different paradigms, namely, downlink/uplink transmissions from/to macro or micro base stations, and D2D communication in the uplink LTE bands. We propose an approximate dynamic programming algorithm to perform resource allocation scheduling for both upload and download data traffic, while taking into account the interference caused by resource sharing between the different data transfer paradigms. Through simulation, we compare the performance of our approach to solutions employed in today's networks, such as eICIC techniques and proportional fairness scheduling. Results show that our approach significantly improves the system performance in terms of both overall throughput and energy efficiency.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124445700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Operators are looking for cost-effective solutions to overcome the problem of 3G infrastructure for high contention traffic scenarios. Several schemes were offered to save the moment, and they brought some extra costs including deploying femtocell or WiMax, LTE, LTE-Advanced systems along with their expensive equipment. On the other hand, operators are expanding their networks with 802.11 technologies such that they can exploit the free-band communication. Meaning the data traffic can handover between WLAN and UMTS interchangeably. By using NS-2 simulator, we implemented IEEE 802.21 WG's Media Independent Handover (MIH) module by combining with Channel Quality Indicator (CQI) values collected from user equipment (UE) and observed a recovered throughput for both medium. We found that there is a tradeoff among energy efficiency, delay tolerance and cost. Furthermore, in this study, we integrated a Quality of Experience (QoE) metric during real-time handover decision process so that with this type of collaborative solution, an operator will be unique in terms of user happiness and heterogeneous network management.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126348343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We perform an assessment of system performances with respect to traditional homogeneous LTE-Advanced networks, not only in terms of capacity and energy consumption, but also showing the potential impacts on the Quality of Service (QoS) of the system. In particular the self-backhauled small cell architecture considered in this paper is based on the type I relay architecture specified in Release 10 of 3GPP. Moreover, a scheduling framework based on MBSFN subframe switching is described and proposed as potential enabler for further energy efficiency enhancements. In addition, a possible Centralized RAN (C-RAN) implementation is described, consisting in a partially centralized algorithm and the application of this mechanism in a centralized processing unit instructing local scheduling entities implemented in the protocol stack of Small Cells. The presence of these schedulers in conjunction with on-board sleep-modes can be a promising tool for maximizing energy efficiency benefits in conditions of low traffic load. System level simulation results showed that these Small Cells in urban and suburban environments can satisfy the need of increasing traffic demand by providing an higher energy efficiency without compromising the QoS and the system capacity.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134294168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An instance of a SON function can run on one cell (distributed architecture) or can be built to govern a cluster of cells (centralized/hybrid architecture). From the operator point of view, SON functions are seen as black boxes. Several independent instances of one or multiple SON functions running in parallel are likely to generate conflicts and unstable network behavior. At a higher level, the SON-COordinator (SONCO) seeks to solve these conflicts. This paper addresses the design of a SONCO. We focus on coordinating two distributed SON functions: Mobility Load Balancing (MLB) and Mobility Robustness Optimization (MRO). Thus on each cell we will have an MLB and an MRO instance. The MLB instances will tune the Cell Individual Offset (CIO) parameter and the MRO instances will tune the HandOver (HO) Hysteresis parameter together with the CIO parameter. The task of the SONCO is to solve the conflicts that will appear on the CIO parameter. We propose a Reinforcement Learning (RL) framework as it offers the possibility to improve the decisions based on past experiences. We outline the tradeoff between configurations through numeric results.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122751291","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The advantages of carrying out offloading versus executing an application locally at the user terminal depend on multiple parameters. This paper evaluates the impact that the transmission rate and the load of the system have on the quality of service experienced by the users as well as on the energy saving that the users get from doing offloading. Based on this evaluation, the paper proposes a method to select the uplink data rate that minimizes the latency experienced by the user given a target energy saving with respect to the case of no offloading. The result depends on the channels conditions, the system load, the application parameters, and the energy consumption features of the terminal. The method is presented firstly for flat fading channels and secondly for non-flat fading channels.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122025669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed scheduler aims to insure that all the devices that are randomly requesting for channel time are equally catered to. In other words the number of times each device is given access to the channel should approximately be equal to the number of times the rest of the devices are given access. The proposed scheduler known as the Improved Rejection Ratio (IRR) mainly takes decisions based on the previous history of successful attempts by a device to access the channel as well its unsuccessful attempts. Upon comparison with other relevant schedulers, the hardware based performance evaluation reveal the advantages of the proposed scheduler in terms of provision of fair and relatively uniform access to the devices requesting for channel time.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121822796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
