It has been widely accepted for providing Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) applications in many “smart” environments, such as cities, buildings, metering, and even agriculture. For several reasons though such applications have yet to achieve wide adoption; a major hurdle is the lack of user trust in the IoT and its role in everyday activities. RERUM, a recently started FP7 European Union project. aims to develop a framework which will allow IoT applications to consider security and privacy mechanisms early in their design phase, ensuring a configurable balance between reliability (requiring secure, trustworthy and precise data) and privacy (requiring data minimization for private information, like location). The RERUM framework will comprise an architecture, built upon novel network protocols and interfaces as well as the design of smart objects hardware. To highlight the challenges and evaluate the framework, RERUM will employ several Smart City application scenarios, which will be deployed and evaluated in real-world testbeds in two Smart Cities participating in the project. Here we detail the key technologies RERUM will investigate over the coming three years to reach its vision for IoT security, privacy and trust.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123783599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the proposed scheme, a Wi-SUN MAC layer profile deploying IEEE 802.15.4/4e-compliant LE superframe-based multi-hop transmission mitigates the bottleneck problem by controlling the radio link numbers in a superframe, thereby preventing the data collection throughput degradation expected in high-traffic situations such as emergencies. Computer simulation results confirm that the proposed superframe division multi-hop data collection scheme with frame aggregation achieves over a 95% frame success probability under the high-traffic situation in which 1,000 meter nodes generate frames at a 10-minute interval.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131515851","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These solutions focus on a dynamic and fine-grained network management. In this paper, we investigate the autonomic network management (specifically in congested resource scenarios) in fully virtualized and disintegrated network paradigm. We model the problem of congestion avoidance using cooperative game-theoretic approach. We also extensively implement the validation framework and deploy the proposed algorithm on the developed validation platform. We observe that the proposed algorithm autonomically balances the load and reflects gain in terms of resource utilization.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128309849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the caused intra-cell interference is quite a challenging issue in D2D underlaying cellular network. In this paper, we propose a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based joint resource allocation and user matching scheme (GAAM) to minimize the intra-cell interference while maximize the system throughput. With the proposed scheme, we firstly analyze and formulate the user matching scheme in mathematical model, during which resources are allocated to cellular user equipments (CUE) and further be shared by D2D UEs (DUE) in a coordinated manner. Secondly, GA is used to globally search the optimal user matching solution to maximize the system throughput. Furthermore, with some innovations, the more efficient GAAM can be applied to a much wider scope in D2D underlying network. Simulation results show that GAAM achieves nearly the same system throughput comparing to the exhaustive method, which is 30 Mbps bigger than the traditional greedy algorithm based allocation and matching scheme (GreedyAM).","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129628652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Firstly, we discuss how this is relevant to future multihop networks focusing on the concept of Device-to-Device communication. We then model this framework as a graphical game, which is a special case of a non-cooperative game in which the payoff of a node is influenced only by a subset of its neighbors. We discuss two payoff models that may be used depending on the application: The first focuses only on transmitters and assigns by default a zero payoff to the receivers and the second models a non-zero payoff to both transmitters and receivers. We then present a distributed scheme that finds an efficient Nash Equilibrium (NE) under both payoff models. We evaluate its performance through extensive simulations showing that the algorithm converges fast to a NE, in a number of rounds that is proportional to the logarithm of the number of nodes. Finally, we find that the number of successful transmissions is almost equal at any NE. This indicates that, under this metric, any NE is practically equally preferable.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130708659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, rate of such development surpasses advances in creation more durable batteries. Although energy awareness of mobile devices is utmost important, the significance of results of energy consumption modeling drops rapidly due to never-ending massive release of new mobile devices. In this paper, we describe new methodology and tool developed for measurement of energy consumption of user devices. Using this new tool, we carry out measurements of selected non-radio components (CPU, screen, I/O storage operations, speakers) of smartphones. For each component, several parameters are investigated. These parameters influence how a component is used by a user and therefore have great impact on overall energy consumption. Moreover, mathematical models are proposed in order to predict energy consumption without necessity to perform measurements and to determine expected consumption in real time.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"95 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134161997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, it may be not true in D2D broadcast communication, especially when any closed-loop feedback on PHY, MAC, RLC, or PDCP layer is not allowed. In this paper, we provide performance comparison between centralized and distributed resource allocation schemes in an outside network coverage scenario, according to evaluation methodology and simulation environment agreed in current 3GPP RAN1 D2D standardization. Based on our system level simulation results, it is shown that distributed resource allocation using an implicit coordination (e.g., energy sensing) can achieve better performance than centralized resource allocation schemes under consideration, especially when the frequency resource granularity is small. Therefore, distributed resource allocation in D2D broadcast communication can be the baseline approach for Public Safety in outside network coverage.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128782807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many network accesses request downloads from some web site, with an Uplink which represents the request and a Downlink for the download, and each of these two connections have distinct minimal QoS needs. More generally pairs of nodes communicating across a network may have distinct QoS goals for each of the directions of communication. Thus this article presents a scheme to introduce into CPN the option of bilateral QoS differentiation between communicating nodes. In the proposed approach, each CPN edge or user node is a source and a destination at the same time, managing Uplink user originated traffic, and Downlink traffic sent back in response to the Uplink. Bilateral communication is implemented with four distinct QoS objectives that can be met between sender nodes (original source or destination). Traffic volume asymmetry between received and sent data is used as a QoS triggering condition, when the lower traffic rate requires short delay QoS, while the higher traffic rate requires loss minimisation. The approach is implemented and illustrated with measurements that show its effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":425676,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference Workshops (WCNCW)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129654434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The work is based on realistic models of traffic growth and realistic models of base stations power consumption, along with their expected evolution. The models and assumptions used have been issued from real measurements, established and validated by the GreenTouch consortium. The paper shows that the introduction of small cells and the use of green software features like sleep mode and load balancing can maintain the energy consumption stable despite of the traffic growth.
