The active filter is applied for power quality enhancement in the distribution grid in terms of harmonic compensation. The compensation method is proposed by sinusoidal extraction controller, which is comprised of positive-sequence voltage detector and instantaneous real-power theory. This approach is different from the conventional methods and provides good compensation characteristics in steady state as well as transient states. Five-level cascaded inverter switching signals are generated from triangular-periodical current controller method. The shunt active filter system is investigated and verified in terms of order of harmonics, VDC settling time and parameters under different non-linear load conditions.","PeriodicalId":425080,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual IEEE India Conference","volume":"161 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123395882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, it is necessary to minimize the cost of interruption by reducing the outage duration. One of the ways to reduce the outage duration is by adopting the distribution automation. In complete automation system, all the disconnecting switches are placed under remote control, whereas in partial automation, only some of the disconnecting switches are placed under remote control. In case of partial automation at a desired intensity level, it is necessary to select the best possible combination of disconnecting switches to minimize the cost of interruption. In this paper, Expected Customer Interruption Cost (ECOST) based on reliability indices are evaluated for different automation intensity levels of an Indian utility system and the best combination of disconnecting switches is selected in each level.","PeriodicalId":425080,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual IEEE India Conference","volume":"201 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123732700","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even across different domains the complexity of managing millions of documents is huge. One such case was when our company was invited to submit a proposal for a central bank of a large country for its Cheque Truncation system. This would help the central bank reduce the turn-around time for clearing cheques at the same time save costs in physically transporting, storing and processing these cheques. Our company evaluated two well known approaches by doing Proof of Concept exercises on two architectures which were identified to be proposed to the bank. During the evaluation, strengths and weaknesses of both architectures were quantified on different parameters to identify a more suitable architecture. However both architectures were found to be unsuitable to meet the non-functional requirements of this bank, primarily Performance, Scalability and Reliability. Hence we began studying the problem of storing and retrieving images from a system where millions of images are added per day, with an aim of getting superior performance, scalability and high reliability. This paper describes the two architectures that were evaluated and adduces benchmark numbers to prove their unsuitability against the given requirements. Next it describes a set of experiments that were performed. Based on experimental findings a new architecture was developed. This architecture is capable of delivering extremely high-performance, high-scalability and high-reliability. This architecture is what is described and labeled as High-Performance ImageStore Solution in this paper.","PeriodicalId":425080,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual IEEE India Conference","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122613465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed partial decode and forward method renders better bit error rate performance at reduced complexity and lower power consumption at the receiver. Unlike conventional decode-forward and amplify-forward schemes, the relay generates soft-value estimates of the received symbols and retransmits the estimated soft value symbols to the final destination. In accordance with the partial decode and forward scheme, a novel channel estimation technique is also introduced here. A simple redesign of the preamble sequence at the relay enables the destination to concurrently estimate the product of the channel state information between source & relay, and relay & destination. Extensive numerical analyses and simulations show that the proposed scheme attains considerable performance gains against the conventional decode-forward and amplify-forward schemes, which proves to be a good trade-off.","PeriodicalId":425080,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual IEEE India Conference","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114589183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Earthquakes, Cyclones, tsunamis and other natural disasters leave the terrain not only difficult for navigation, but also dangerous for human search and rescue teams. Human rescue teams are painfully slow and sometimes need extreme caution. The problem calls for a fast and effective rescuing system. Robots have suddenly started seeking attention for their application in this field. This paper addresses the problems faced by rescue teams and how a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi controlled robot can efficiently help in saving more number of people struggling in the rubble of the collapsed buildings in case of natural disasters. The paper also highlights the advantage of using Bluetooth or any other Wireless technology controlled Robots over the currently employed tele or remote controlled robots. The proposed Robot with slight modifications can also be used for navigation in places like coal mines and nuclear plants where human search is a bit risky and dangerous.","PeriodicalId":425080,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual IEEE India Conference","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128737434","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The finite conductor thickness of the strip is replaced by two parallel strips of zero conductor thickness. The Green's function for the multilayer microstrip line in Fourier domain is obtained by Transverse Transmission Line (TTL) technique. Galerkin's method is applied to find the effective dielectric constant and impedance. Dielectric Loss of multilayer microstrip line is calculated by converting multilayer microstrip line structure into single layer microstrip line using Single Layer Reduction (SLR) method. The Conductor Loss of microstrip line is calculated by Wheeler's incremental inductance method. The effect of finite conductor thickness is also analysed on the impedance, effective relative permittivity, dielectric loss and conductor loss.","PeriodicalId":425080,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual IEEE India Conference","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130345751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cultivation of Aspergillus Niger was conducted in submerged fermentation in the starch medium. Initially, the effect of incubation time (12–72 hours), pH (4–8), Temperature (25–450C), starch concentration (5–25 mg/ml) and Inoculum size (5–25 %) on two objectives, i.e. total amount of crude enzyme and its activity was examined. It is observed that process variables were found to have a significant influence on the enzyme production. Multi-objective optimization of process variables found from central composite design were-incubation time (60 hrs), pH (6), Temperature (350C), Starch Concentration (15 mg/ml) and Inoculum size (15%). At these variables, maximum enzyme activity and concentration of protein were 94 IU/ml and 8.27 mg/ml respectively. The optimum process variables found from Genetic Algorithm (GA) were-Incubation time-68hrs, pH-7, Temperature-350C, Starch Concentration-19 mg/ml and Inoculum size-20%. The DC output of the rectifier is further regulated using a Buck Converter. The active filter topology is based on a single-phase voltage source inverter with four IGBT switches. The proposed approach includes the usage of a modified Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm to arrive at optimal values of control parameters for a given load. The parameters thus obtained at different load conditions are used to develop Empirical Equations for the system at hand using MINITAB Quality Tool. These empirical equations can further be used to determine the control parameters suitable for other load conditions also. The control scheme employs a simple strategy which uses a dual-mode methodology which consists of PI controller along with Hysteresis Control technique for power quality improvement. The entire system was simulated using MATLAB software and the corresponding results are discussed in this paper. This approach not only determines the optimal values of control parameters resulting in an improvement over existing techniques in power quality, but also is a simpler control in terms of both firmware algorithm and hardware requirements. Much of the extended calculations that are normally used for the control can be avoided. This makes the design attractive for commercial manufacturers.","PeriodicalId":425080,"journal":{"name":"2011 Annual IEEE India Conference","volume":"396 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123368443","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
