The search region is usually a rectangular neighborhood, centered at the pixel of interest, which may include pixels whose original gray value do not match the value of the original central pixel. Consequently, their participation in the averaging process degrades denoising performance. To eliminate their effect, researchers suggest creating an adaptive search region which excludes those dissimilar pixels. In this paper, we present a novel model-based method which defines a set of similar pixels, from the initial search region, using the statistical distribution of the dissimilarity measure. Moreover, to enhance the denoising, our method also adaptively assigns one of two dissimilarity kernels to each pixel, based on its local features. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better performance than the original one in terms of PSNR, SSIM, and visual quality and is found to be more efficient than other examined approaches.","PeriodicalId":425029,"journal":{"name":"2013 8th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123395424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The contribution of shape-related features was assessed by developing a Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system whose classification is solely based on this type of features. Four shape descriptors were used, first separately and then simultaneously, to describe the images. Image segmentation was performed both manually, by an expert, and automatically, by using an Adaptive Thresholding algorithm. The best performances were SE = 92% and SP = 74%, obtained for manually segmented images, and SE = 92% and SP = 78%, obtained for automatically segmented images. These results were achieved by combining the shape descriptors and show that shape information plays an important role in melanoma detection. Furthermore, no degradation was observed when automatic segmentation methods are used, instead of manual ones.","PeriodicalId":425029,"journal":{"name":"2013 8th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121716364","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is partly due to its inherent difficulty, and also to the impact that a fully automated classification system can have in a commercial application. In this paper we test the efficiency of a relatively new learning tool, Extreme Learning Machines (ELM), for several classification tasks on publicly available song datasets. ELM is gaining increasing attention, due to its versatility and speed in adapting its internal parameters. Since both of these attributes are fundamental in music classification, ELM provides a good alternative to standard learning models. Our results support this claim, showing a sustained gain of ELM over a feedforward neural network architecture. In particular, ELM provides a great decrease in computational training time, and has always higher or comparable results in terms of efficiency.","PeriodicalId":425029,"journal":{"name":"2013 8th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127248033","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Main motivation behind the work is to reduce computational complexity involved in using Least Square Error Minimization (LS). The proposed method down samples the given image to its quarter size and then to its (1/16)th size. For each downsampled image, the least Square predictors are then obtained corresponding to pixels belonging to each bin. Thus, these predictors are used to synthetically generate a set of optimal predictors corresponding to each bin of the original image. Our proposed algorithm thus reduces 60% to 70% of computational complexity. We also observed that proposed algorithm gives insignificant loss in terms of compression ratio as compared with some of the previous works reported in literature.","PeriodicalId":425029,"journal":{"name":"2013 8th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127718566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Active noise control (ANC) has been studied to solve such acoustic noise problems. ANC is a technique based on the principle of superposition, i.e., an antinoise with the same amplitude and opposite phase is generated and combined with an unwanted noise, thus resulting in the cancellation of both noises. However, ANC is still not widely used owing to the effectiveness of control algorithms, and to the physical and economical constraints of practical applications. In this paper, we briefly introduce some fundamental ANC structures, and focus on recent advances on signal processing algorithms, implementation techniques, challenges for innovative applications, and open issues for further research and development of ANC systems.","PeriodicalId":425029,"journal":{"name":"2013 8th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129887860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Image databases usually contain images with different characteristics, thus determining an optimal parameter setting of an algorithm is a challenging task. To overcome this problem we cluster the image databases. For each cluster an optimal parameter setting is determined for the same algorithm. We extract Haralick features from the image, and apply k-means clustering to obtain the clusters. We tested our approach on a publicly available database, where the proposed approach improved the performance of a state-of-the-art exudate detector.","PeriodicalId":425029,"journal":{"name":"2013 8th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129736460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The P300 speller is one important BCI application that allows the selection of characters on a virtual keyboard by analyzing recorded electroencephalography (EEG) activity. In this work, we propose an ensemble classifier that uses Principal Component Analysis (PCA) features to identify evoked P300 signals from EEG recordings. We examine the performance of the proposed method, using different linear classifiers, on the datasets provided by the BCI competition III. Results demonstrate a classification accuracy of 91% using the proposed method. In addition, our results indicate a significant improvement in classification accuracy compared to traditional feature extraction and classification approaches. The proposed method results in low across-subjects variability compared to other methods with minimal parameter tuning required which could be useful in mobile platform P300 applications.","PeriodicalId":425029,"journal":{"name":"2013 8th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127861134","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The room responses are adaptively estimated with good accuracy by reducing the interchannel coherence with a technique based on the missing fundamental phenomenon, that introduces only a mild alteration of the sound timbre. The equalizer is designed in warp frequency domain for improving equalization in the low frequency region, reducing the computational cost of the design and deriving an algorithm capable to work in real time. Simulation results using signals acquired in a real environment illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":425029,"journal":{"name":"2013 8th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115674016","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These local fractal processes provide a consistent framework to explore regularity of the logs, measured by the Hölder exponent (H), at all depths in the logged interval. This paper presents the results of a regularity analysis carried out on datasets recorded in three Algerian oil boreholes located in different geological settings. This analysis allows to draw valuable information related to the well formations. The regularity profiles, or the Hölder exponent functions, mainly those obtained from the “porosity-dependent” logs (sonic, density and neutron), exhibit a strong correlation with the lithology. Each lithological change is marked by a jump in H value. In addition, for a given well, the computed regularity profiles show a very significant correlation between them. That is, the regularity is a robust property which can be successfully used to characterize lithological heterogeneities of layers. On the other hand, this study does not reveal any relation between the recorded physical property and its estimated regularity degree for each log, and low correlation coefficients are generally observed between these parameters.","PeriodicalId":425029,"journal":{"name":"2013 8th International Symposium on Image and Signal Processing and Analysis (ISPA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131074922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
