This study focuses on the reduplication phenomenon in Hadoti, where it ensues with the help of a discourse marker /rə/, functioning as an emphasizing agent in the process. This marker comes between the base and the reduplicant for expressing emphasis in work or action or verb (as in /kʰa rə kʰa/ ‘do eat,’ etc.). In Hadoti, /rə/ functions as a vocative case marker when it comes at the end of the sentence as in /ram ɡjo rə/ ‘Ram went’. However, when /rə/ occurs in between the base and the reduplicant, the stress shifts on the latter from the base. Phenomena of reduplication with a specific focus on the use of /rə/ are discussed in the current study using the constraints like *CLASH, and STRESS-TO-RED, etc. This particular phenomenon is predominantly present in the case of verbs in Hadoti, which is a unique feature of this variety of Hindi.","PeriodicalId":42481,"journal":{"name":"Dialectologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66395264","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this research is to rationalise the language shift of Teochew to other Chinese languages, such as Mandarin. Two theoretical frameworks guided the methodology; that is, a) the linguistic variation framework, and b) the “acts of identity” framework. A combination of both of these frameworks enabled the scrutiny of external and the internal forces that caused the linguistics variation, and the identification of the attitudes of the younger generation of Teochew speakers towards Teochew. Findings indicated that the younger generation of Teochew speakers in Klang is indeed participating in the process of language shift from Teochew to Mandarin, and they displayed more negative attitudes than positive ones towards Teochew. Although they do not look highly upon their native language, they still think that knowing their native language is important. External factors, such as the demographic factors and the mass media too contributed to the rate of the language shift.","PeriodicalId":42481,"journal":{"name":"Dialectologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66394928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Khortha is the second most spoken language after Hindi in the state of Jharkhand, with approximately 80 million speakers (As per the Govt. of India, census reports 2011). The paucity of the language resources in Khortha played a vital role in motivating us for the present work. The methodology adopted for the present study comprises linguistic field surveys (Dash & Aman 2015) and reviews on the earlier literature of Khortha. The current status and demographic profile of Khortha suggest its usage as a link language among the other indigenous language communities (i.e. Munda, Bedia, Kurmali, etc.) as well. The scope (usage) of the Khortha language within the various domains (i.e. administration, education, mass media, social divisions and religion, judiciary and interpersonal communication), as discussed in the paper, gives a clear idea of its usage and linguistic identity. This paper can be a helpful resource for the researchers in order to portray the current linguistic status of the language.","PeriodicalId":42481,"journal":{"name":"Dialectologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66395045","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Intenta delinear lo que constituye tanto un comportamiento linguistico cortes comodescortes a la luz de la jerarquia de relaciones que sonaltamente representativasde la sociedad, la cultura y el idiomaarabes. Se trata de una estudio de etnografia sociolinguistica efectuadaen una comunidad arabe monoetnica rural en el suroeste de Iran. Se consideraque las interacciones linguisticas en las comunidadesdehablaarabes estan influenciadas por variables biologicas como la edad, el sexo y el parentesco, factores culturales como la afiliacion religiosa y el trasfondohistorico, asi como aspectos linguisticos como el lenguaje altamente formulaicoempleado. Esta red complicada de interacciones entrelazadas crea una dinamicaespecial. Interactuar y participar en un entorno linguistico tan enroscadose vuelve cada vez mas dificil, especialmente para los “recien llegados o forasteros linguisticos”, como ninos y extranjeros. Se concluye que, sin un conocimiento profundo del rolde la mayoria de las variables mencionadas anteriormente, la interrupcion de la comunicacion sera probablemente inevitable. En linea con investigaciones anteriores, el analisis verifica la naturaleza multifacetica de la construccion de identidad, que es el producto conjunto de la dinamica de las relaciones de poder, las interacciones sociales y las estructuras linguisticas. El estudio destaca el importante papel desempenado por el origen etnico, la cultura, el genero y las afiliaciones religiosas. EnglishThe current study explores the linguistic interactions of Iranian Arabs by taking into account such factors and concepts as interlocutor power, solidarity, politeness and impoliteness and other variables including gender, age, kinship and others. It attempts to delineate what constitutes polite as well as impolite linguistic behavior in light of the hierarchy of relations which is highly characteristic of the Arab society, culture and language. The study is a sociolinguistic ethnography carried out in a rural mono-ethnic Arab community in southwestern Iran. It is argued that linguistic interactions in Arab speech communities fall under the remarked influence of biological variables including age, sex and kinship, cultural factors such as religious affiliation and historical background, as well as linguistic aspects like the highly formulaic language employed. This complicated network of interwoven interactions creates a special type of dynamics. Interacting and participating in such a twisted linguistic setting becomes increasingly difficult particularly for ‘linguistic newcomers or outsiders’ such as young children and foreigners. It is concluded that, without a thorough awareness of the role of most of the above-mentioned variables, breakdown in","PeriodicalId":42481,"journal":{"name":"Dialectologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66394014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The vocabulary of the Flemish, Brabantic and Limburgian group is brought together in three comprehensive thematically arranged dictionaries in a joint international and inter-university effort. The dictionaries are based on their own dialect questionnaires, but the very big - and older - collection of Ludovic Grootaers, father of Willem Grootaers, is added. Thus, the results of the lexicographic efforts of the father of Willem Grootaers, are brought to light at last (after more than 50 years!). The dictionaries were set up in parallel in order to make possible the aggregation of the data, thus fulfilling the objectives of the founders of the projects (Toon Weijnen in Nijmegen, and Willem Pee in Gent). A project to this effect, the Dictionary of the Southern Dutch Dialects (DSDD) was launched in 2017. In our article, we will propose the plan for the aggregation and the state of affairs of the DSDD, the structure of the database and dwell on the different editorial problems that have to be solved. The different dictionaries / database were indeed composed over a very long period of time, at different places (Nijmegen, Leuven, Ghent) and by different editors, hence a great number of inconsistencies arose over time. In order to compose an aggregated DSDD-database, a number of standardization activities have to be carried out.","PeriodicalId":42481,"journal":{"name":"Dialectologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66390441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Grootaers: The S&K network method and the Linguistic Atlas of Japan Database (LAJDB). The S&K network method was proposed by Sibata to objectively divide dialect areas. The original idea demonstrated by Sibata involved dialect division through a network of linguistic similarities drawn on a map. The LAJDB is a project that aims to digitally render the entirety of the information contained in the Linguistic Atlas of Japan (LAJ). The LAJ is Japan’s first nationwide linguistic atlas created on the basis of a linguistic geographical survey. Sibata and Grootaers were pivotal to the project. This paper focuses on several concepts and perspectives that were utilized for these projects: contact, network, people, and geographical space. These aspects were essential to the advancement of these research initiatives and are closely linked to their common spirit of linguistic studies.","PeriodicalId":42481,"journal":{"name":"Dialectologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66390558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
