Method: In a previous paper, the present author investigated each work of Ranganathan in chronological order. This paper reanalyzes the results obtained in the previous paper based on the theory of structure-expression style. This theory distinguishes two kinds of categorization methods of classification systems: one is by structure, either hierarchical or multi-dimensional, and the other is by expression style, either enumerative or synthetic. The writings of Vickery are also investigated and compared with those of Ranganathan based on the same theory. Results: The concept of Ranganathan’s facet is “totality of the classes.” Although this concept itself is simple, a current misunderstanding is that facet may be used in combination with “notation consisting of plural independent elements,” because both of these are adopted in the Colon Classification. Notation consisting of plural independent elements has also been confused with “composition of class numbers.” These three concepts should be distinguished definitively based on the theory of structure-expression style. These confusions influenced the later works of Ranganathan as well as the entire body of work of Vickery.","PeriodicalId":42468,"journal":{"name":"Library and Information Science","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2014-06-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70642461","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper quantitatively examines how the status of open access journals has changed in the publication of scholarly journals, and discusses how the status of open access journals will be going in the near future. Methods: Three kinds of surveys were conducted: 1) The primary source was information on 38,803 journals published by 2011 in STM extracted from Ulrichsweb. The source was used to calculate the ratio of open access journals to the total number of journals in 2011. 2) The second data source was journal price lists and the web sites of five major commercial publishers. Both primary and second sources were used to calculate the ratio of new open access journals and new subscription based journals year by year. 3) The web sites of open access mega journals were used as the third source to check their current status. Results: The major findings were: 1) The ratio of open access journals to the total number of journals in STM was 14% in 2011. 2) The ratio of new open access journals to the total number of journals in STM has risen continuously since 2000. The majority of new open access journals have been launched by open access publishers. Among the major commercial publishers, Nature Publishing Group and Springer have begun to increase the number of new open access journals since 2010–2011. 3) Open access mega journals have been launched one after another since 2011. In conclusion, Open access journals are still not the predominant form of publication of scholarly journals, but the business model has become accepted by publishers.","PeriodicalId":42468,"journal":{"name":"Library and Information Science","volume":"17 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2013-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70641956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various trials for the digitization of source materials have been performed for more than half a century in humanities research, and yet in library and information science, research on using digital images of source materials has only recently begun. Therefore, the recognition of digital images of source materials by humanities researchers has not been clarified. This article discusses the status of these images and the demand for digitization by humanities researchers. Methods: From July to October 2011, semi-structured interview surveys were conducted on 13 humanities researchers. They covered the use and recognition of source materials and their substitutes, such as facsimiles and digital images, on humanities research. Three main research approaches were used as the analytical framework for assessing the status and use of digital images: text, paratext, and context. Results: The text and paratext approaches showed that digital images of source materials can be used as an academic resource to varying degrees in humanities research. While several researchers argued that some information could only be obtained from source materials, others argued that there is a mutually complementary relationship between information obtained from digital images and source materials. The demand for digitization by humanities researchers can be classified as follows: digitization that is faithful to source materials, digitization by the collection unit, clarification of conditions, and the policies for digitization and improvement of bibliographic information.","PeriodicalId":42468,"journal":{"name":"Library and Information Science","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.5,"publicationDate":"2013-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70642303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"管理学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study also aimed to determine the significance of measuring the amount of in-library use for library management. Methods: Two types of survey were carried out: unobtrusive observation by staff tours of four public libraries, or questionnaires handed out to the users of those libraries on the same day as the observation. The purpose of both surveys was to estimate the whole time of in-library material use. The subjects were two prefectural and two municipal libraries in Japan which had different management and service policies. The analysis compared these two methods and examined the results in detail in terms of reliability and consistency, to validate such differences among public libraries. Results: Quantitative measurement of in-library material use is applicable to various management and research situations as follows: 1) The whole in-library materials use time varies greatly, and the time per visitor varies according to the libraries’ management and service policies. Therefore, these measures are able to reflect the quantity of materials used by library users visiting for selfstudy and/or self-learning. 2) These measures are a useful set of management tools because they reveal actual use by all library visitors. 3) Simulated observation by various time intervals shows that observation every hour is sufficient to estimate the whole in-library use time.
