Works of art created for the radio, as sound art pieces per se, are also becoming an engaging research ground for such disciplines as theory of music or musicol- ogy. Some of the most fascinating examples of radio dramas that may be found in the archives ofRadio Wroclaw are those created by Andrzej Waligorski – a distinctive artist whose activity fell onthe “golden days” of Polish radio drama art, commonly dated back to the 1960s and 1970s. Hisworks constitute a perfect example of a diverse approach to the phonic material of radio drama employed in order to enhance the presentation of the world depicted in the piece. Words and sounds, including music, become carriers of multiple meanings, which the author of the present article at- tempts to explore.

Alluding to his biography and his acquired musical education in his youth, it makes the point that this influenced his artistic attitude. The center of analysis is Kaden-Bandrowski’s article devoted to Aleksander Michałowski, an excellent pianist in the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The main thesis of the article is Kanden-Bandrowski’s great respect for Michałowski’s work and creative effort, which he partially owed to his early musical education. The author also references to Kaden-Bandrowski’s critical texts from the beginning of his literary career as well as his association with the Fryderyk Chopin International Piano Competition; which began in 1927 in Warsaw. Kaden-Bandrowski was a member of the organizing committee for the first competition.

He devoted his life to music, its performance, popularization, and music education. He worked as principal of music institutions in Czestochowa, was a musician, educator and music promoter, and led school choirs and orchestras. He committed his entire professional life to Czestochowa – as a versatile musician, pedagogue and social activist, he fully deserved a permanent place in the cultural landscape of the city and the awareness of its inhabitants. The main content is preceded by a biographical sketch, based on biographical notes in en- cyclopedias and lexicons. The works, most of which have not been published and which have beenpreserved in manuscripts, are discussed on the basis of the author’s own source research and two publisher’s commentaries. When dealing with the main subject, a descriptive method of analysis of a musical work has been applied, which focuses on the musical form, including the compositional technique and taking into account the specificity of violin playing and the expressive aspect. Thepresentation concerns 22 compositions by M. Poplawski: Berceuse for violin and piano, 1906; Prel- ude. Etudes pour violon avec accomp. Piano, 1907; Prelude and dance “W gorach” (en. “In the mountains”) for violin and piano, 1908; La fleur fanee for violin and piano, 1908, Passage for violin and piano, 1908; Sonata in F-sharp minor for violin and piano, 1908; Drei Skizzen for violin and piano, 1908: All Ongarese, Chansonete, Eroticon, Sonata in E minor for solo violin, 1911;Suite “W sloncu” (en. “In the sun”) for violin and piano, 1912; Variations „Za toboj Lizet” forviolin and piano, 1913; Reverie for violin and piano, 1913; Valse for violin and harp, 1916;Menuetto for violin and harp, 1916; Mazurka for violin and harp, 1916; Rigaudon for violin and piano,1918; Polka for violin and piano, 1918; Etude for solo violin, 1918; Menuetto (ancient style) for violin and piano, 1920; Caprice for violin and piano, 1922; Air for violin and piano, without date. \u0000The analyses conducted allowed the following assertions regarding M. Poplawski’s compositions: \u0000— the composer’s output comprises works of various genres (dance, lyrical, virtuoso, sonatas) and is classified as Neoromantic style; \u0000 \u0000 \u0000 \u0000— the compositional technique is characterised by the principle of “permanent evolution” in the shaping of musical narration and makes use of intensive chromaticism; \u0000— later pieces tend to modernize the sound language; \u0000— the preserved Poplawski’s works constitute the last stage of the late-Romantic virtuoso style in \u0000Polish violin literature.

Three tests devised by Edwin Elias Gordon were performed, the first being the Advanced Measures of Music Audiation meant to measure the stabilised tonal and rhythm musical aptitude. The second and the third tests measure improvisation readiness. In the case of rhythm improvisa- tion, it was the Rhythm Improvisation Readiness Record, and for harmonic improvisation – theHarmonic Improvisation Readiness Record. The research was performed on a group of 869 students of Pedagogy with various academic backgrounds in Poland. The results clearly indicate that musical aptitude in the investigated group is at average and low levels. There are also significant statistical relationships between musical aptitude and improvisation readiness, especially the harmonic one.

The development of any given form is a highly dynamic process with each period bringing a wide variety of, frequently contradictory, points of view. In this context, the author performed a formal analysis of four guitar sonatas representative of the period in question: Sonata in A major Op. 17 by F. Werthmüller, Sonata Op. 47 by A. Ginastera, The Blue Guitar by M. Tippett and Royal Winter Music by H.W. Henze. The criterion for selecting the works was to allow a thorough overview of the main trends and views on the sonata cycle form present in guitar music of the second half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century. During the research, an image of the sonata as a cycle emerged which presents the contemporary composers with tools that allow them to pur-sue their artistic vision while maintaining certain immutable features of the form in question. This article attempts to define this immutable identity of the sonata.

In the practical sense, it could seem that the beggars’ song is a historical subject, closed a long time ago, similarly as hurdy-gurdy playing – one of its most interesting manifestations. Nevertheless, songs of hurdy-gurdy players have returned triumphantly these days, performed by amateur and professional musicians. Furthermore, we can observe the phenomenon of consolidation of musicians, not only into bands, but also in wider projects (festivals, academies, meetings of hurdy-gurdy players). The author presents a concise description of hurdy-gurdy playing traditions, the instrument itself, its song repertoire and the contemporary reconstruction of these traditions that is attempted by some environments.

For this end, the history of how the understanding of topos developed, as well as how it manifested itself, shall be presented. This term, one which originates from the Ancient Greek’s study of Rhetoric, quicklygained acceptance in many cultural contexts. It is thanks to this growth that it was promptly incorporated into ars musica. During the Middleages, this concept from the Antique era was revived, notably influencing the illustrative nature of this era’s music. The concept continued throughout the Common era proceeding, especially in reinforcing the role of affects in music. The 20th century witnessed the progression of many unique understandings of topos coindependently. The contem- porary thought of this era has presented numerous propositions of one is to understand the term that oscillates between the fields of musicology, literature studies, and philosophy. It can be said, that defining topos in the field of music will be closely tied with the emerging „transcultural” pheno- menon; an appropriate paradigm with which to observe the variables shaping European culture, such as globalization and orientalism.
