The acronym stands for: Intelligent Search Engine for Belief Legends. The database contains more than 70,000 traditional legends in Dutch, Frisian, Danish and German, while another 6,000 Icelandic legends are currently being added. The initiative for this project was taken several years ago by the Meertens Institute in Amsterdam, the University of Rostock/the Wossidlo Research Center and UCLA/UC Berkeley. The ambition is to create a European database, with an intelligent search function and geographical visualizations. What makes the search engine ‘intelligent’ is that it can always be searched in English, thanks to high-quality automatic translations in the background. The legend material that is brought together can also form the basis of sophisticated graphs that network themes, motifs, narrators, repertoires, and places. This article includes examples of international legends about mermaids and werewolves.","PeriodicalId":42252,"journal":{"name":"FABULA","volume":"64 1","pages":"107 - 127"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48927174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the indices have been used extensively for the study of small groups of folktales and their associated motifs, there have been few attempts of describing a large linguistically and culturally unified corpus through its indexing. The study corpus consists of 2,606 folktales collected by Evald Tang Kristensen in nineteenth century Denmark, which were later indexed according to the second revised edition of the Aarne-Thompson index. We adjust this older index to align with the current ATU index. By creating linked network representations of the ATU index and the MI, as well as updating the Brandt indexing of the Danish folktales, we generate a network with 19,738 nodes and 28,292 edges, where nodes can be ATU numbers, MI numbers, Danish folktales, storytellers, or places of collection. By embedding all the Danish stories in this network, we provide a large-scale overview of the Danish folktale tradition. We introduce two novel interrelated network decomposition methods for the study of folktale collections at corpus scale: fixed points of degree peeling and graph fragments. The resulting analysis of the Danish corpus supports comparison with other traditions. Any collection that is similarly indexed can be embedded in this ATU+MI network and then subjected to the same interrelated graph decompositions.","PeriodicalId":42252,"journal":{"name":"FABULA","volume":"64 1","pages":"64 - 91"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43892156","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Es erweist sich, dass es sich im Falle der Beispielfabel um eine jüngere Übernahme auf Grundlage der literarischen Bearbeitung des Stoffes durch Vsevolod Michajlovič Garšin (1855–1888) handelt. Der Beitrag setzt sich mit der Frage nach Garšins Vorlage auseinander und befasst sich zudem mit anderen Ausprägungen des Motivs von Vögeln, die ein flugunfähiges Tier durch die Lüfte tragen (und dann absichtlich, versehentlich oder durch dessen Verschulden zu Boden fallen lassen), in Zentral- und Nordasien (etwa im Kacchapa Jātaka und im Pañcatantra).","PeriodicalId":42252,"journal":{"name":"FABULA","volume":"76 6","pages":"427 - 431"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41287682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mit ihm ging auch eine Flut von Erzählungen unterschiedlicher Art viral. Der Beitrag beabsichtigt nicht, einen Überblick über dieses mittlerweile schwer zu überblickende Material zu geben; er versucht stattdessen, das Potential einer sich als kritische Gesellschaftsanalyse verstehenden Erzählforschung in der Auseinandersetzung mit der Pandemie vorzuführen. Dazu werden zunächst die gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen und mit ihnen verknüpften Diskurse in den Blick genommen. Von da aus frage ich nach unterschiedlich gelagerten Erzählkomplexen, die diesen Rahmenbedingungen und Diskursen entwachsen. Drei davon werden exemplarisch näher betrachtet: Erzählungen können erstens als Ausdruck kollektiver Vorurteile oder Ventil diffuser Ängste gelesen werden; sie können zweitens symbolischer Ausdruck von Spaltungstendenzen innerhalb einer Gesellschaft sein, oder aber drittens machtvolle Instrumente von Großmachtinteressen. Alle drei Ebenen spielen letztlich ineinander bzw. treffen auf der Ebene des alltäglichen Erzählens aufeinander. Wir haben es hier mit einem komplexen, wechselseitigen Beziehungsgefüge zwischen einem Krankheitserreger, den darüber kursierenden Erzählungen und der mit beiden konfrontierten Gesellschaft zu tun.","PeriodicalId":42252,"journal":{"name":"FABULA","volume":"63 1","pages":"239 - 261"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44484917","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using insights from depth psychology, Aarne-Thompson-Uther classification and, especially, performance theory, the paper examines the character of the ogre in a number of theoretical areas. These include the relationship between tradition and creativity, the development of narrative meaning and how the ogre functions as a symbol with special reference to stories found in eastern and southern Africa.","PeriodicalId":42252,"journal":{"name":"FABULA","volume":"63 1","pages":"343 - 361"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45523100","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
