Spy films, in turn, are often constructed from certain clichés that some viewers expect, while more sophisticated spectators find them discrediting. Yet intentional use of clichés, including national and cultural stereotypes, may serve the purpose of conscious criticism or cultural irony, as is often the case in spy film parodies or spoofs. Referring to the widespread spy narrative character typology embodied in James Bond films, the article considers the popular stereotype of the Scandinavian woman observed in twenty-first-century espionage films for wide audiences, focusing on the Hamilton and Kingsman series to examine the effects that serious or ironic use of the stereotype has on the representation of female characters.","PeriodicalId":42248,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Scandinavian Cinema","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42441639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Time is embedded as self-reflexive by way of several narrative devices, including the reordering of chronology and projections of imaginable events. Time is also central to depictions of the characters’ experiences and states of mind. This article attempts to untangle the modes of temporality at play in the film and offers some interpretative pathways by which they can be understood.","PeriodicalId":42248,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Scandinavian Cinema","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43485208","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a transauthoral omnibus film, credited to two directors and several independently working scriptwriters, ‘Four Times Love’ has a reputation as an incoherent film. Indeed, the project started with only a relatively vague idea of a Swedish frame story and one protagonist connecting three episodes that take place in Finland, Denmark and Norway. As the script evolved, however, unifying themes central to the Nordic welfare state – concerning, for example, social equality and political neutrality – seem to have gained ground. The aim of this article is to read this film as a manifestation of such complementary ideas and ideals surrounding the then (re-)emerging Nordic welfare state system.","PeriodicalId":42248,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Scandinavian Cinema","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47839084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article identifies the complexity of Trier’s work through his thematization of the inner antagonist in Reprise and Oslo, 31. august (Oslo: August 31st) and the problematizing of ‘soft parenthood’ in Louder Than Bombs and Thelma. The latter film also represents a new genre-related externalization of inner, highly antagonistic forces.","PeriodicalId":42248,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Scandinavian Cinema","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44644945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

I argue that seeing the sexualized child in film can evoke the viewer’s concern for the well-being of the child actor, thus disrupting absorption in the fictional world on-screen. I further contend that two modes for managing the problematic presence of the sexualized child on-screen – cuteness and queerness – ultimately fail to eliminate our ambivalence about this figure. The article draws attention to the underexamined figure of the child in 1960s Swedish cinema; additionally, it includes material from a 2017 interview with Jörgen Lindström.","PeriodicalId":42248,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Scandinavian Cinema","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46936805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Taking its point of departure in film theoretical discussions of the close-up, the article argues that Trier in different ways creates autonomous moments through close focus on his protagonists’ faces. In Louder Than Bombs, the prolonged, almost static close-up of the face of the older female actress blurs boundaries between character and actress. In Reprise, delicate images of the two fragile young people seem to be protectively enveloped by the film’s close-ups. In both instances these autonomous moments create their own temporal and spatial unity and distribute moments of intensity and affect across the image surface.","PeriodicalId":42248,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Scandinavian Cinema","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2019-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46691322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
