Together, these two dimensions constitute the drivers of R&D internationalisation and contribute to the construction of global innovation networks through knowledge augmenting and exploiting strategies. The article shows how multinational enterprises can use a combination of augmenting and exploiting strategies in emerging markets and hence demonstrates that international R&D activities not always evolve in a sequential and ordered trajectory.","PeriodicalId":422075,"journal":{"name":"management revue. However, the specific actions that are performed during the service encounters are predominantly under the discretion of the individual frontline employee. Therefore, the employee’s idiosyncratic perception of the job, the subjective job definition, may significantly influence the behavior shown in the service encounter. Based on existing approaches on job definitions with regard to proactive, citizenship, prosocial and safety behavior this paper proposes a method to assess the subjective customer related job definition of service employees in the technical industries. The results of a survey in 49 small technical service organizations indicate good psychometric properties of the measure. A second study including a survey in 20 service organizations and a customer survey reveals that the customer related job definitions of service employees are associated with the service behavior as perceived by the customers. The findings underline the importance of subjective job definitions of service employees for the achievement of effective service behavior. Assessing and changing customer related job definitions may be a promising way to improve service quality.","PeriodicalId":422075,"journal":{"name":"management revue. It analyses the effects of the self-concepts on entrepreneurial orientation, intrinsic motivation, job satisfaction and satisfaction with the economic success. The main result of our study is that there are two ways for gaining work satisfaction as a publisher. Both have inherent constraints. Publishers with a strong idealistic orientation to promote cultural goals are often not very satisfied with the economic success of their enterprises. However, their high intrinsic motivation enhances their job satisfaction. Publishers with a strong economic orientation derive their satisfaction primarily from their firms’ success and obtain high job satisfaction from that. Somewhat surprisingly we find a strong relationship between satisfaction with success and intrinsic motivation, a result that seemingly contradicts the crowding-out thesis, which asserts that extrinsic rewards undermine intrinsic motivation. The limitations of this thesis and of its application to publishers are discussed. The data stems from a survey with responses of 196 publishers.","PeriodicalId":422075,"journal":{"name":"management revue. We use the 2004 and 2008 survey waves of the Linked-Employer-Employee dataset at the IAB (LIAB) and estimate panel data models for the identification of effects on the corrected dissimilarity index. We find that the link between the level of segregation and organizational characteristics such as gender mainstreaming, formalization and the proportion of women in management positions depends on features of organizational demographics. The results can be utilized by businesses and politics to identify levers for the reduction of segregation.","PeriodicalId":422075,"journal":{"name":"management revue. Demographie change: A cause for increasing organizational diversity and a challenge for regional innovation capacityThe demographic change is altering the composition of Germany's population which affects many social, political and economic systems. The demographic transition and the following demographic change are discussed in science since the 1940s. The public and the research interest in demographic issues have grown steadily and the science in 2013 was characterized by research on the topic of demographic change as clearly as never. The Year of Science of the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) run under the motto \"The demographic opportunity\". In this sense the funding of research and development (RD Friedrich & Schlomer, 2013) and is composed of a plurality of sub-dynamics that proceed at different speeds and with different socio-economic impacts. In general, the multiple consequences are summarized as population aging, population decline and an increasing population diversity (Friedrich & Schlomer, 2013). Those consequences are influenced by moderating variables such as the current age structure, the amount of inward and outward migration (Tivig & Kuhntopf, 2009) and far-reaching social developments (Friedrich & Schlomer, 2013). The demographic impact of the political division and reunification of Germany, for example, still superimposes today's natural population movements1 (Friedrich & Schlomer, 2013).The aging is evident in shifts in the age structure of the population. 2060 one in three people will be older than 65, and every seventh person will be 80 years or older. This is a consequence of the baby-boom generation which is followed by a transition to low birth rates (Statistisches Bundesamt, 2009). Referring to the population decline there is - despite the registration of population growth in some German regions, due to positive natural population movements and/or migration gains - a significant de- crease in population assumed for the entire population in the long term. The Federal Statistical Office calculates in advance a population between 65 and 70 million in 2060 (Statistisches Bundesamt, 2009). Most affected are the New Federal States whose population development is negative since 1989 (Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis), 2013). This means that German companies have to deal with the requirements of older workforces and an increasing competition for the declining number of available professionals. In case of the increasing heterogeneity of the population the diversity of cultural backgrounds is going to rise in two ways. On the one hand, the share of immigrants and their descendants of the total population is rising2. On the other hand, the range of countries of origin of the immigrants is growing compared to the 1960s and 1970s, in which most immigrants came as guest workers from southern Europe and Turkey. …","PeriodicalId":422075,"journal":{"name":"management revue. The reasons for this are socio-political and economic changes that make diversity a highly relevant topic. In higher education, there is currently much discussion on these concepts and an increasing number of institutions is introducing policies targeting a diverse student body. Taking a comparative approach, this paper analyses the origin of diversity management in the United States, discusses research on this topic in U.S. higher education and compares this with current developments in Germany.","PeriodicalId":422075,"journal":{"name":"management revue. We introduce and compare two approaches we expect worthwhile discussing in the German context: On the one hand, the classification approach identifying diversity between higher education institutions is reflected. A critical look is taken at the possible repercussions of classifications on the design of university programmes. On the other hand we introduce an alternative approach that has so far been rarely adopted in Europe. The ‘Australian model' is based on a statistical method that levels out different initial positions for performance indicators. This will help higher education institutions to respond adequately to different social requirements and needs of students. An arithmetical example illustrates the way the model functions. We conclude that the ‘Australian model' can avoid some problems of the classification approach and an adaptation would be worthwhile for Germany.","PeriodicalId":422075,"journal":{"name":"management revue. This study examines the relationship between self-leadership and affective organizational commitment empirically. An underlying assumption in the self-leadership research, that employees are guided and committed by internal work ideals, is tested, and self-leadership is compared to motivational factors in traditional management theories. The results show that self-leadership positively affects organizational commitment, while the internal work ideals overall do not seem to have the expected effect. However, the effect of self-leadership on commitment disappears when the relationship is controlled for traditional motivational factors. The theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed, and foci for future research are suggested.","PeriodicalId":422075,"journal":{"name":"management revue. This paper contributes to the advancement of stakeholder-oriented HRM by exploring how Italian human resource (HR) managers perceive the actual involvement levels of eleven internal and external stakeholders, and their views on how to improve them. Data were collected from a survey and ensuing focus group discussions. The survey gauged the extent to which different stakeholders are involved in designing various HR processes, while the focus groups explored what actions can be taken to foster a stakeholder orientation in HRM. The two phases of the study involved 30 HR managers from Italian companies with the highest capitalization on the Milan stock exchange; in total, the companies involved had more than 750,000 employees. The discussion of the findings is followed by identification of specific directions for future research.","PeriodicalId":422075,"journal":{"name":"management revue. For this reason, companies deploy a number of formal mechanisms to foster integration across multiple functions and hierarchical levels. In many SMEs, however, such formal mechanisms are complemented or even replaced by informal social networks among managers and employees. Despite the relevance of intraorganizational networks, past research on SMEs, however, was focused mainly on the interorganizational level of analysis. To cover this gap, we map ego networks of senior managers in SMEs and explore their knowledge exchange relationships both inside and across functional and hierarchical boundaries. Our study shows that these social networks are an essential driver of knowledge integration and innovation.","PeriodicalId":422075,"journal":{"name":"management revue.
