Euphemism is a a figure of speech in which an appropriate expression is replaced with words or phrases that have a weaker meaning, so as to soften or conceal its excessive violence or crudeness for the sake of social expediency, or for religious, moral or even political concerns. This figure is based on the evocative power of words which leads people to believe in the representation of reality developed by the orator, even when it is not based on verisimilitude. In this way the description of reality is often misleading and untruthful. To identify and expose these strategies of misleading manipulation is one of the crucial tasks of critical thought today. On it hinges the possibility for citizens to be more than just passive spectators of the spectacle of communication and defenceless targets of propaganda techniques.","PeriodicalId":421989,"journal":{"name":"American International Journal of Social Science","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121387634","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The analysis of these data allowed to highlight school difficulties of the girls and the factors determining their success. Difficulties met by the girls are of different kinds: school, family, social, psychological, cultural. According to teachers the girls meet the same difficulties as the boys in their school course. The boys take out better because they are less vulnerable than the girls. However, the girls who succeed in spite of difficulties owe it especially to their determination and their representation of the school as factor of further education and of empowerment.","PeriodicalId":421989,"journal":{"name":"American International Journal of Social Science","volume":"01 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127391446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From all cocoa farmers in Ikom, 70 farmers whose farm size measured up to five hectares and who made use of loan during the 2004 farming season were purposively sampled for the study. Social factors as age, household size, level of education, farming experience and marital status as dummy variable were regressed on loan repayments. The objective was to identify those social factors that affect loan repayment and to determine the significance of these social factors on loan repayment. Age, household size and farming experience were significant while level of education and marital status were insignificant. The work recommends that age, household size and farming experience of a farmer should be considered as necessary criteria for loan disbursement. Background and Problem Nigerian agriculture is characterized by use of crude tools and implements, low output, low returns, low level capacity to satisfy the food and fibre needs of the nation and hence low income, low savings and investment – the viscous poverty cycle. Meaningful agricultural development requires transformation from traditional to modern technique. This in turn, demands investment of capital. The majority of farmers in this country is poor and cannot on their own meet the level of financial demands of their farms. The remedy often perceived is to seek for loan. Credit, has therefore become a significant feature in this sector of the economy. Borrowing creates debts, which must be repaid or carried over as liabilities that often reduces credit image. Various social characteristics are expected to influence the repayment of loans by farmers. Balogun and Otu (1991) remarked that in small holder farming, credit use and repayment capacity is determined by household size. Arene (1990) and Mejieha (1991) found age to be significant in loan repayment. Objective of the Study The objective of this study is to examine the effects of some social characteristics of the cocoa farmer borrower that affect his/her loan repayment capacity. The specific objectives are to: i. identify the social factors that affect loan repayment ii. determine the significance of the social factors on loan repayment, and iii. state the economic/policy implications of the study.","PeriodicalId":421989,"journal":{"name":"American International Journal of Social Science","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125521315","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the end of first six weeks of the second semester, if freshman' scores below the threshold (70), he or she will be referred to the tutor for additional tutoring, including selective help in course content, as well as training in time management and learning skills. In the study, Regression discontinuity design (RDD) method was used to find that early intervention improved students' scores on common problems in final exam by 5.1% to 8.9%. Students with lower than average math scores in the college entrance examination, especially girls, the effect is more obvious. The results show that low-cost early mild intervention may significantly affect students' academic performance. regression discontinuity individual characteristics of of analyze the influence of teaching intervention on students' final examination results, type of students benefited the most from intervention. Then, through the similar analysis of the who studied microeconomics the semester before the intervention, the was carried out. Results of the study suggest that policymakers and researchers need to use nudge policies to carefully consider potential behavioural incentives, including which interventions are targeted and to better predict who an intervention will be effective for. The study found that student who had just fallen below the threshold, that is, those who needed tutoring from undergraduate mentors, had better scores on common issues in the final exam than those who had just exceeded the threshold. In addition, freshmen who lack relevant knowledge of economics benefit the most from intervention. Students with above-average math scores improved 3.1%, while students whose math scores were below average improved 18.4% as a result of intervention, which meant that attention should be focused on some students who did not perform well in their studies. The early nudge intervention raised students' awareness of learning and made them aware of the resources available on campus for learning, help and life skills. Intervention can also improve students' subjective well-being, reduce stress, make them feel more supported, and benefit students' mental health, which is a method that can achieve practical results and is relatively low cost. Although this study focuses on microeconomics courses, the research methods and conclusions are also applicable to other types of professional entry-level courses.","PeriodicalId":421989,"journal":{"name":"American International Journal of Social Science","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115797497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The term has been extended to also cover transnational commercial land transactions and domestic deals and highlights the commercial nature of the transactions regardless of scale and output market. It is from the foregoing that this paper tries to make an analytical x-ray of the intricacies and controversies surrounding the issue of land grab and to also look closely at the dynamics of its medium of exchange as it pertains to foreign investors and local land owners in parts of Africa. The paper makes a practical indepth analysis of the issue from a pragmatic standpoint hence employing case studies. The paper relies largely on desk research but also adopts quantitative data gathered from field survey by other research institutions and individuals. The paper deduced that the political economy of land grab is largely detrimental to the host countries and the local populace at large and recommends amongst others that governments of local communities and states within Africa and other regions where this is prevalent must rise up to the occasion and secure the land of its people which is a great assert and is of significant importance due to its value. However genuine businesses in the form of foreign direct investment must be allowed to thrive as no country can survive in isolation without private sector involvement.","PeriodicalId":421989,"journal":{"name":"American International Journal of Social Science","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130020691","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The family values chosen were identified in questions contained in the General Social Survey (GSS) administered to a national sample of United States adults. When compared with this sample (n = 1,974), social workers were more supportive of diverse family forms, more accepting of suicide and abortion, more likely to affirm the effectiveness of same-sex parenting couples, but less likely to affirm hard spanking of children. Controlling for socio-demographic variables, however, differences for a question concerning working mothers with children having warm relationships with their children disappeared, as did other questions about parent/children relationships. Similarly, differences on questions related to suicide and abortion were diminished with controls. Addressed are implications for practice considering family values which differ in most cases from the families’ in the general population that social workers will potentially serve.","PeriodicalId":421989,"journal":{"name":"American International Journal of Social Science","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124590680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study used questionnaire and interview as instruments for data collection while factor analysis and qualitative description as tools for data analysis and interpretation. The finding illustrated that lack of language knowledge and motivation were mostly carried out English reading problems while student personality, learning methods and teacher personalities were the shadow behind the issues even though the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport had integrated this subject into the state curriculums for lower secondary to tertiary educations since 1993. To take more actions for challenges, investigation of this issue at lower secondary school, additional root causes including family issues, English study time, learning and teaching materials, and library accesses were recommended for future research.","PeriodicalId":421989,"journal":{"name":"American International Journal of Social Science","volume":"308 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123136913","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
