Despite the fact that all the varieties of the Iberian Peninsula possess various strategies that compete with the morphological future, there is no consensus on pinpointing which alternative refers to each of the possible readings. The only thing all authors agree on is the current decline of the morphological future tense with temporal value. In this article, current dialect data of the Romance languages of the Iberian Peninsula have been collected with the aim of analysing the contemporary and oral usage of this verbal tense in order to verify whether it still maintains its temporal or modal uses, or whether, as the latest research points out, it has become an evidentiality strategy.

In particular, it tries to elucidate in what way the Pluperfect contributes to the building and structuring of discourse segments or, to put it differently, how it helps to create coherent units of discourse and interacts with other units on a more comprehensive structural level. The analysis also focuses on the interplay of the Pluperfect with competing past tense forms, the perfective Simple Past and the Perfect. The account put forward in this article tries to present a unified analysis by resorting to the tense-in-discourse framework developed by Becker & Egetenmeyer (2018) .

However, there is no agreement as to how many genuinely Spanish-based creoles there are in the world,\u0000 and identifying the size of that group can generate controversies. Papiamentu, for instance, is canonically classified as a\u0000 Spanish-based creole, even though most scholars at present seem to agree its origins are Creole Portuguese. A Portuguese lineage\u0000 has on various occasions and by various authors also been claimed for Chabacano (Philippine Creole Spanish) and Palenquero (spoken\u0000 in Colombia). These creoles, too, were supposedly once Portuguese-based, only to subsequently be ‘relexified’ towards Spanish.\u0000 This paper argues that there is little linguistic basis for that claim. Although both creoles do indeed seem to have received some\u0000 Portuguese (Creole) input, we maintain that this input was limited and substratal in nature, and thus has no bearing on the\u0000 classification (whether diachronic or synchronic) of the two creoles as truly Spanish-based.

The aim of this paper is to propose a detailed analysis of these contracted forms. I suggest that the fusion occurs during a secondary grammaticalization. This process involves, on the one hand, the definite article, i.e. a grammatical element, and, on the other hand, some prepositions which, semantically, can be functional or lexical but which function syntactically as grammatical elements. The analysis shows that case inflection of nominals has been transferred to the preposition while the other categories appear in the article which merged with prepositions. Therefore, the fusional forms can be considered as prepositions marked by the grammatical categories of gender, number and definiteness.

We test two hypotheses based on recent approaches to language variation in French.\u0000Firstly, we challenge Koch & Oesterreicher’s (2011) model, which denies an influence\u0000of the code of a message on its linguistic form, giving precedence to its conception. We show that there are differences between\u0000the corpora that are partially induced by the code of the message, i.e. the possibility of dropping the referential subject.\u0000Secondly, there are indications in favour of the hypothesis which states that clitic subjects in informal French have to be\u0000analysed as agreement markers rather than as proper arguments of the verb (cf. e.g. Culbertson\u00002010 , among many others). We conclude by proposing that there is a difference between written and spoken language in\u0000non-standard varieties.

Refusing to be read in a linear manner, including thousands of plays-on-words and more than 20\u0000 languages besides Spanish, Larva breaks many linguistic, literary and discursive codes. It also displays close\u0000 links with translation as it constantly moves from one language to another. The influence of translation and rewriting in the\u0000 novel is analyzed from contemporary approaches to Ríos’s views on literature (e.g. Kristeva, Riffaterre) with an aim of\u0000 understanding how they shape Larva’s main narrative structures and writing processes. Finally, the case of\u0000 Larva leaves the door open for questioning the principles of originality and creation in (heterolingual)\u0000 literature.

We will show that these verbs, which we label ‘adimensional predicates’ are sharply different from prototypical change of state verbs, and we argue that their existence supports a distinction between the syntactic structure of a verb of change of state and the conceptual operation that anchors the change to a specific cognitive domain.

If on the one hand, the expression was indeed reported to be a neologism by Radtke in 1990, a careful exploration of the relevant literature on the other has revealed that a diachronic, quantitative and pragmatic investigation of its distribution has not been conducted yet. Methodologically, the study conducts lexicographic, quantitative and qualitative analyses over a range of historical and contemporary dictionaries and corpora and it performs statistical significance tests, such as the Log Likelihood and the Fisher’s exact test. The results will reveal not only that this marker started to be used in 1977, but also that today, it is the response marker preferred by language users, thus qualifying as a case of language change. Furthermore, by analysing the diachronic distribution of no problem in English, the article will also explore the possibility that English may have been the source language for such change.
