This paper reports on the results of an empirical analysis undertaken on more than two hundred research projects in Knowledge and Information Management, currently funded by the Commission of the European Communities. A trend towards a gradual maturation of the presently prevailing research 'paradigm is identified, indicating a need for a paradigm shift' that will provide a new direction and vision for future research in the area.","PeriodicalId":420216,"journal":{"name":"ITI 2002. Our research is concentrated on intelligent tutoring systems, a generation of computerized educational systems that attempt to mimic the capabilities of a human tutor. We elaborate how the case of the interface of the Adaptive Knowledge Base Builder, intended for the development of an arbitrary domain knowledge base, can support the above reasoning. In order to specify its design and behaviour User Action Notation is advocated as a suitable method.","PeriodicalId":420216,"journal":{"name":"ITI 2002. Is it merely the way that model implements integrity rules (i.e. entity integrity property, referential integrity property) or should the model's semantics of what user on some specific level can see and/or believe be considered as well? In this paper, the basic concepts of multilevel security (MLS) database models are described and issues regarding the MLS semantics are considered. A comparison of well-known multilevel security models (LDV, Jajodia-Sandhu (1991), MLR, Smith-Winslett (1992) and Belief-Consistent Model) is given. The main problems, caused by the lack of semantics or incomplete semantic definitions, are discussed.","PeriodicalId":420216,"journal":{"name":"ITI 2002. We tested two online schedulers, the Enhanced Cilk Scheduler (ECS) and the Central Manager (CM). ECS is a decentralized scheduler, which implements work stealing and processor mugging techniques. CM is a centralized greedy scheduler. Our simulation results show that ECS is a well behaved scheduler particularly suited for scheduling task execution in dynamically changing systems because it is robust, requires little communication, and almost matches the performance of the CM scheduler.","PeriodicalId":420216,"journal":{"name":"ITI 2002. In its original form, NIAM emphasises the use of external identifiers for entity types. The unique identifiers and other label types are transformed into attributes of relational database schemata. There are well-defined algorithms that transform a NIAM conceptual schema to the fifth normal form relational database schemata. This is possible because the NIAM model shows fact types and reference types some of which can be transformed into relationships between attributes. This paper presents ENIAM, an extension to NIAM which is suitable to be implemented on object databases. It introduces new concepts of category type, the main schema and sub schemas together with a transformation algorithm from an ENIAM conceptual schema into object database schema.","PeriodicalId":420216,"journal":{"name":"ITI 2002. We analyze the disadvantages of Fisher's information measure for optimization of sampling designs. To overcome this problem, we modify Fisher's information measure and we upgrade it to the multivariate setting. On a case study of soil we demonstrate the evaluation of different information measures derived from Fisher's information measure. The variables under study were the concentrations of several chemical compounds in soil (such as pH, N, C, Zn, etc.).","PeriodicalId":420216,"journal":{"name":"ITI 2002.
