While the insertion in ‘lɯ’-irregular stems has been accounted for by paradigm uniformity, not many researchers in phonology have shown their interest in /l/ insertion before ‘ljʌ’-initial suffixes. In search of the motivation, we measured the epenthetic rate before ‘ljʌ’-initial and other phonologically similar suffixes in a spoken corpus. We show that the insertion only occurs before ‘ljʌ’-initial suffixes, suggesting it is not phonologically conditioned. We argue that /l/ is inserted in analogy to /l/-initial suffixes (e.g., ‘-llako’ and ‘-lk’a’). Most of all, these suffixes share semantic functions such as ‘intent’, ‘expectation’ and ‘desire’ with ‘ljʌ’-initial suffixes. In addition, some of these /l/-initial suffixes optionally delete /l/, giving birth to /l/~ ∅ alternation. A sociolinguistic analysis of the corpus revealed that the epenthetic rate was higher in southern provinces, where the non-standard form ‘-llako’ has been common. This study demonstrates that analogical changes can occur in suffixes as well as in stems.","PeriodicalId":41887,"journal":{"name":"Concentric-Studies in Linguistics","volume":"39 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136018345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The focus of this study is on Korean and English heterophonic homographs, where two or more distinct words with the same spelling have a unique phonological form (e.g., 대가 [tɛga] 大家 / [tɛk’a] 代價, lead [lid] / [lɛd]). This study collects Korean heterophonic homographs directly from a large Korean corpus and analyzes them, while English heterophonic homographs are analyzed using the lists presented in Martin, Jones, Nelson, & Nelson(1981) and Bergeron(1990). This study categorizes Korean and English heterophonic homographs according to their types and compares their characteristics from a linguistic perspective. In this study, it is shown that the phonological differences in Korean heterophonic homograph pairs are relatively simpler than those in English ones. It is also shown that the heterophonic homograph pairs in Korean and English reflect the inherent nature of the interaction between morphological and phonological processes in Korean and English.","PeriodicalId":41887,"journal":{"name":"Concentric-Studies in Linguistics","volume":"39 8","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136018498","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The currently used phonemes or characters in the phonemic fluency test are “ᄀ”, “ᄋ”, “ᄉ”, and “ᄂ”, which are selected based on their frequency in the dictionary. However, results show that the less frequent phoneme “ᄉ” is uttered more in dementia patients’ speech than the more frequent one “ᄀ” is. It shows that the currently used classifications of phonemes do not properly represent linguistic capacity. Moreover, comparison between “ᄀ” and “ᄉ” or between “ᄀ” and “ᄂ” is inappropriate because the given phonemes differ in their places of articulation as well as manners of articulation. Thus, we discuss different statuses of phonemes in terms of language acquisition, language impairments, and VOT measurements. We, then, propose to select a single parameter, i.e., either place or manner of articulation, in order to assess the linguistic ability of the dementia patients.","PeriodicalId":41887,"journal":{"name":"Concentric-Studies in Linguistics","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136018500","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The structural patterns and pragmatic tendencies of OS-types are analyzed in the light of the three linguistic aspects of information processing; 1) newness, 2) heavyness, 3) a SVO word order. A tight correlation between newness and OS-types tells us that the use of OS-types might be one of effective constituent orderings that contributes to the manifestation of the principle of end-focus, which leads to the interplay of ‘given-before-new’ in language-use situations. Another relationship between heavy-NP shifts and OS-types suggests that the grammatical structure or constituent ordering of OS-types are optimally matched to English language users’ language parsing capacity. In addition, the linear, or canonical word order of OS-type structural connections explains why new heavy long and complex constituents tend to be directed towards the sentence-final position and OS-types. Thus, a general claim supported by the findings from this study is that the extensive use of OS-types is closely related to the effectiveness of information processing, and thus OS-types are likely to be preferred or selected for the purpose of facilitating English language users’ language production and comprehension.","PeriodicalId":41887,"journal":{"name":"Concentric-Studies in Linguistics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136018344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there are some structures that have double complementizers and subject-multiple auxiliaries inversion in embedded clauses. Gelderen(2004), Radford (2018), Nyvad(2016), and Jang(2014) present double complementizer structures such as that+if/whether/wh-word which one ForceP cannot accommodate. In addition, regarding FocP, Culicover & Winkler(2008) and Park(2012) suggest subject-multiple auxiliaries inversion in embedded than/nor clauses. In general, head movement of T to FocP accounts for the type that inverts single auxiliary, but is incompatible with the type of multiple auxiliaries inversion. Many theoretical proposals have difficulty in accounting for these structures. This paper proposes Split-ForceP and Split-FocP to solve these phenomena which existing theories cannot explain properly.","PeriodicalId":41887,"journal":{"name":"Concentric-Studies in Linguistics","volume":"39 9","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136018497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, this research investigates how the meaning of ‘ear’ evolves through semantic processes, with a particular emphasis on denotation and connotation, influenced by social and cultural factors. Additionally, this study delves into the semantic function of idiomatic expressions, revealing that their meanings go beyond the sum of their constituent parts. This involves exploring various meanings of components that create new sign content in both object and metalanguage. This study also examines the semantic structure of the Korean word ‘ear’, highlighting the role of metaphor and its synchronization with the primary meaning. The semantic structures of idiomatic expressions combine metaphor and metonymy, resulting in third meanings when components merge. These combinations create conceptual metaphors based on relationships within the semantic web of narrative expression. While the study centers on ‘ear’, it suggests that similar investigations of other body part terms words could offer valuable insights into the Korean, leaving this as a potential focus for future research.","PeriodicalId":41887,"journal":{"name":"Concentric-Studies in Linguistics","volume":"39 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136018342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
