Tras impartir en la Universidad Central de Madrid la conferencia titulada \"El divorcio como medida higiénica\" en noviembre de 1923, tiene que huir del país y exiliarse a Latinoamérica, donde vivirá el resto de su larga vida, que transcurrió entre Uruguay, Chile, Cuba y México, y donde tuvo popularidad y reconocimiento. Estas páginas quieren sumar su nombre al de ese conjunto de mujeres de la Edad de Plata que dieron un paso adelante en la vida pública para reclamar derechos y espacios de libertad y autonomía personal, mostrando algunas de las ideas, palabras y reflexiones feministas que compartió en su polémica conferencia sobre el divorcio y en los artículos que publica en los diarios de Montevideo y La Habana, convertidos en un canal de difusión y una herramienta pedagógica sobre la mujer moderna.","PeriodicalId":41770,"journal":{"name":"Lectora-Revista de Dones i Textualitat","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45924758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chatterjee","doi":"10.1344/lectora2022.28.14","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1344/lectora2022.28.14","url":null,"abstract":"This paper is one of the first attempts to reconstruct the story of Afia Begum, wife —and later widow— of Abdul Hamid (a Bangladeshi immigrant in Thatcherite London), whose entry was cleared by the British Home Office in 1982, months before her husband died tragically in a fire in East London. Upon her arrival in the United Kingdom, Afia was told that her grant to stay in the country was no longer valid owing to the death of her husband; that she was now an illegal immigrant in Britain. In the process of the reconstruction, I also revisit the untold story of the Sari Squad, a group of Asian women who fought valiantly, though peacefully, to stop Afia’s deportation. Although Afia was deported on May 8, 1984, her case was heard in the European Court of Human Rights and debated in the European Parliament; in both forums, the highhandedness of the British Home Office was fiercely critiqued. By way of conclusion, I lay out a hermeneutic in which to read Afia’s story, in a literary sense, offering a skeptical stance to reading it in binary terms of success-defeat/victimization-survival of a female foreigner battling a racist state. In doing so, I draw upon Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak’s “connection between nationalism and reproductive heteronormativity”, to argue that the case of Afia’s deportation suggests that her nationality can only be —tragically— established by determining the citizenship of her husband; this ends up doubly othering and transcendentalizing her nationality, reducing her to her sociobiological reproductive heteronormativity, impregnated with the cryptic trace of her husband’s ghost which practically became the summum bonum of her deprived statehood.","PeriodicalId":41770,"journal":{"name":"Lectora-Revista de Dones i Textualitat","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45141139","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Primeramente, se contextualizará la obra en el marco de la Transición española, analizando el desarrollo de la cultura underground, el feminismo y su influjo en la creación de una determinada \"comunidad emocional\". A continuación, se procederá al estudio del personaje de Purita como icono de una sociedad en ciernes; en este sentido, el valor de la obra de Nazario se refuerza, puesto que su creación ejemplifica el nacimiento y desarrollo de una nueva \"estructura del sentir\". Así, se ahondará en una serie de aspectos —familia, sociedad y sexualidad— con el fin de desentrañar las propuestas y denuncias expuestas por el autor en el sensible período de la España predemocrática.","PeriodicalId":41770,"journal":{"name":"Lectora-Revista de Dones i Textualitat","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46206301","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Muchas de sus posiciones ideológicas las transmite en su producción. Fue pionera del teatro proletario en España, y el tema escogido para su primera obra fue la situación de las trabajadoras. En toda su producción memorialística —que no se resume únicamente a Una mexicana en la guerra de España (1964)— muestra especial interés por la marginalidad y los bajos fondos. Desde su primera obra de teatro, Al rojo, de 1933, pasando por sus memorias y otras obras inéditas, la prostitución es uno de los elementos esenciales. De este modo, buscamos indicios en su obra para contestar a la siguiente pregunta: ¿Era Carlota O’Neill abolicionista?","PeriodicalId":41770,"journal":{"name":"Lectora-Revista de Dones i Textualitat","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2022-10-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48094143","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
