Even at the peak of the romance with Western portfolio investors, the controlling shareholders of Russian listed companies put the full control at the top of their priorities. In the 2000s, the Russian listed companies’ controlling shareholders sought gradual accommodation with minority shareholders and a gradual acceptance of Western corporate governance practices and thus espoused market capitalization as an important strategic goal. This was reversed in the 2010s as the rapidly tightening grip of the state on private business and mounting restrictions on Western investment in the Russian economy took hold. It has also reduced a market demand for Western best corporate governance practices on the part of Russian controlling shareholders. After 2014, most controlling shareholders of Russian listed companies have switched to the strategy of acting as junior partners of the state. This switch has largely diminished their market orientation and the demand for Western-style corporate governance. Smart cities require close collaboration between the city governance, business, and consumer communities to develop solutions for various circles of stakeholders. While most of studies in this field focused on digital technology, the importance of citizen-centric approach has gathered the momentum. However, there is a lack of research on adoption of smart city solutions by citizens. In practice, while consumer feedback was proposed, factors enhancing consumer willingness to adopt smart city solutions were not identified. This study aims to propose a framework by introducing an integrative citizen-centric bottom up approach based on consolidation of insights from literature dedicated to innovation adoption and smart city solutions. Ibragimov, Ignacio Vélez-Pareja","doi":"10.21638/SPBU18.2019.201","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21638/SPBU18.2019.201","url":null,"abstract":"We demonstrate analytically and illustrate with examples that the conventional measures of the residual operating income such as the Economic Value Added (EVA) are biased by design and so may yield a misleading assessment of financial performance. Fundamentally, the magnitude of the measurement error depends on the amount of realized interest tax shields and the book to value ratio. Other potentially significant sources of distortions induced by the EVA design are identified as well. We propose a robust alternative that is a concurrent evaluation of the firm’s operating and total performance by means of two related metrics, the Operating EVA (OEVA) and the Total EVA (TEVA). Coherent implementation of the OEVA–TEVA technique is simpler than the EVA both analytically and computationally. It is also able to provide additional information for the management decision making. However, in recent years, research advocates a more broad approach integrating multiple indicators of social benefits. One of these approaches is associated with the concept of public value, which describes the overall value that the government creates for the society. In this research we theoretically illustrate and empirically evaluate the possibility to enhance public value of public services through the electronic interaction of citizens and authorities on a local (municipal) level. We use an example of online claim submission system on landscaping and public amenities issues. The paper is based on a survey among 150 elderly citizens of a district of St. Petersburg (Russia). Despite the fact that elderly citizens are actually willing to adopt the electronic way of communication with local authorities and even associate it with a higher level of comfort and transparency, the online interaction itself do not make them trust the authorities more or submit their claims more often. To increase the level of trust and enhance the actual public value, the authorities need to demonstrate some practical results of their activity. This paper elaborates the linkage between public value creation and public e-services implementation on a local level. In order to prevent productivity and financial losses, company management needs to handle the new type of risk. Existing technologies of stress management proposed by psychological literature are insufficient. We elaborate a new group of theories that consider workplace stress as a social problem and propose that not only individuals but also organizations are responsible for regulation of stress-based risks. The paper describes key approaches to stress research and systematizes different levels of stress factors including organizational and macrosocial factors. Although there are substantial advantages given by the employer brand, its value for specific target groups needs to be explored more deeply. The aim of this article is to identify the key employer brand attributes that are important for young business specialists and to reveal the benefits for the company brought by the employer brand. The empirical research based on mixed methodology (in-depth interviews and a survey among business school bachelor and master program students) was conducted to identify the role of the employer brand in the employment decisions of young specialists and in shaping their salary expectations. The results showed that the jobseekers want to work in the company with the employer brand even if it provides lower wage level. This paper explores the specifics of B2B firms’ CO on the example of Russia’s emerging economy. The empirical survey of 272 Russian B2B firms represents the platform for applying well-established CO measurement tools as an integrated complex measure. The results of factor analysis identify a critically important aspect of CO, which helps to differentiate the customer oriented firms from those with “declared” CO. The quantitative prevalence and the comparative economic efficiency of each ideal type are estimated using indicators of sales dynamics, changes in commodity range and competitive positions. The empirical analysis is based on data from a standardized survey of 684 corporate managers (of retailer and supplier firms) operating in Russia in the food and non-food markets conducted by the HSE in 2016. The analysis revealed high prevalence of building intensive inter-firm relations in the supply chain and low prevalence of network connections with competitors. The development conditions of such companies differ by country. In case of Russia, it is enhanced by a special population structure: about 80% of Russian gazelles are affiliated with business groups. The authors set themselves the task of understanding how dependence or independence of gazelles is related to their chances of becoming fast-growing. The study shows that in Russia the standard factors that determine the likelihood of transition of independent firms to the rapid growth are statistically insignificant for affiliated firms, and even approximately do not explain the process of their transformation into high-growth companies.
