The IMB5 project explores the LTE-broadcast mode eMBMS within two detailed single-frequency-network (SFN) field trial networks in Erlangen and Munich, Germany and identifies potential improvements of the current broadcasting feature within LTE towards future releases of 4G and 5G. On the User Equipment (UE) side, terminals from Qualcomm and Samsung based on commercial chipsets have been used mainly for application layer tests. For detailed physical layer tests, two different LTE software-defined-radio platforms (one based on the OpenAirInterface framework and one from National Instruments) have been set up to support detailed field experiments with the existing and future extended eMBMS beyond the state-of-the-art in LTE release 12. On the application layer, it is shown in the project, that using LTE eMBMS, a flexible service mix of unicast mobile broadband and broadcast linear TV can be delivered. For country-wide deployment of eMBMS SFNs, physical layer waveform modifications like an increased cyclic prefix compared to the current LTE standard are recommended.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114900622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the major drawback is represented by the limited coverage capacity. In order to cope with it, beamformers that generate beams with very narrow beams have been studied. Special attention has to be devoted to the tradeoff between coverage distance and area covered by the beam: depending on the UEs deployment, a too narrow beam might result into a low throughput and spectrum efficiency. In this paper a new solution to improve the cell coverage and the spectrum efficiency is proposed. The idea is based on the fact that the beamformers are designed to be flexible to choose the beam from a codebook of beams with different widths and different directions. The choice depends on a scheduling algorithm designed to maximize the performance of the system.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122452681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the adoption of suitable assumptions on each of these components, a numerical analysis is presented, where the feasibility of 5G deployment in different spectrum ranges can be assessed. It is observed that increasing antenna gain and channel bandwidth with carrier frequency are able to compensate for the more challenging radio propagation at some extent and provide throughput gains. However, for the fulfillment of radio link and coverage requirements, the network operation in frequencies above 10 GHz is more restricted, requiring short cell ranges, as 50 m or less, according to how demanding the requirements are.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121553041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we investigate the applicability of the NFV technologies to satellite communications platforms and identify -via three indicative use cases- the added-value, as well as the associated challenges and considerations. We also present a proof-of-concept implementation of an NFV-enabled satellite network on an emulated testbed. We conclude that NFV adoption seems quite beneficial for the satcom sector in order to maintain its competitiveness, promote its inherent benefits and also to achieve the smooth integration of the satellite components and their indispensable satellite-specific capabilities into the future federated heterogeneous networks, within the 5G context.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130168454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However the need for more efficient mobile communications is gaining popularity in these scenarios due to extreme requirements by means of availability, price and spectrum usage. This trend will be further accentuated in the coming years with the appearance of 5G systems that promise better figures in almost all the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). LTE can provide many of the functionalities required by emergency services and is currently being evolved towards the 5G era by incorporating heterogeneous networking, over the top applications, network function virtualisation and more. The Q4Health project focuses on the preparatives for market introduction of eHealth video applications for first responders based on LTE technology. This preparation includes the investigation of advanced LTE programmability features and the design and execution of several novel experiments in order to optimise the communications for this platform.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133870226","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Formal verification at machine code level guarantees information isolation between different guest systems (e.g. OSs) running on the platform. To use the platform in networking scenarios, we allow guest systems to securely communicate with each other via platform-provided communication channels and to take exclusive control of peripherals for communication with the outside world. The isolation is shown to be formally equivalent to that of guests executing on physically separate platforms with dedicated communication channels crossing the air-gap. Common Criteria (CC) assurance methodology is applied by preparing the CC documentation required for an EAL6 evaluation of products using the platform. Besides the hypervisor, a secure boot component is included and verified to ensure system integrity.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123656532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In these constrained networks, using a single packet to transmit small sensed data is an inefficient use of both bandwidth and energy. Aggregating multiple measurements and packets into a single packet increases efficiency and resource utilization, but it also introduces the problem of deciding when to transmit aggregated data. In this work, we show theoretically that the classical performance metrics of energy consumption and expiration rate create a balanced tradeoff, where their combined metric of energy consumption per non-expired measurement is a constant, independent of policy selection. We introduce a new metric, information freshness, and derive an optimal policy to maximize it under both single hop and multi-hop cases. We provide a distributed algorithm to implement our optimal policy. Our case studies show that our algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art policies by more than 3.3x for information freshness and reduces energy consumption by more than 62%.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129908751","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This requires a fully integrated and unified management of fronthaul and backhaul resources in a sharable, scalable and flexible way. The integrated and unified management of the transport network resources follows the Software Defined Networking (SDN) principles of centralization, decoupling between control and data plane and application ecosystem. Innovation to enable context-aware resource management and to provide system-wide optimization of QoS, as well as energy related objectives, lies on defining key applications as logical decision entities to program the underlying network and packet forwarding behaviour. This paper presents a set of 5G-Crosshaul SDN applications with the scope of (i) managing the 5G-Crosshaul resources, including not only network but also computing and storage resources, and (ii) offering efficient media distribution and traffic offloading solutions. In order to develop these applications in a real system, we identify the interactions between the applications and the control plane. Based on these interactions, we propose a two-layer application plane and specify the requirements of the applications on the Northbound Interface (NBI) of the control plane.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129909345","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The measurements were performed using a 5G radio access prototype including two transmission points (TPs) and a mobile terminal over 200 MHz bandwidth at 15 GHz carrier frequency. The TPs and the mobile terminal each consists of multiple antennas, enabling spatial multiplexing. In the present paper, improvements from using 4×4 MIMO transmission with dual TPs are being assessed and compared with 4×4 MIMO transmission from one single TP. A significant increase in throughput was demonstrated with distributed MIMO where the two TPs were transmitting unique streams in parallel. This significantly improved the spatial multiplexing capacity in line-of-sight and increased the rank significantly beyond the two polarization dimensions. In the performed tests this improved the throughput from 1.1 Gbps (5.7 bps/Hz) to 2.5 Gbps (12.6 bps/Hz).","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127974288","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

And it provides a programmable network architecture that could facilitate network innovation rapidly. OpenFlow is a network protocol that standardizes the communications between OpenFlow controllers and OpenFlow switches. It is considered as an enabler of SDN. The flow table in OpenFlow switches plays a critical role in OpenFlow-based SDN, which stores the rules populated by the controllers for controlling and directing the packet flows in SDN. Nevertheless, they also become a new target of malicious attacks. This paper analyzes the flow table overflow attack, a type of denial of service attacks, and proposes a systematic way to mitigate the overflow in flow table.","PeriodicalId":416277,"journal":{"name":"2016 European Conference on Networks and Communications (EuCNC)","volume":"34 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116189074","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
