Bebak","doi":"10.1353/fam.2022.0024","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1353/fam.2022.0024","url":null,"abstract":"English Abstract:In recent years, there has been a growing interest among musicologists in the musical life of the monasteries of former Poland. Due to the large dispersion of the sources and difficult access to them, no comprehensive research has been carried out on the musical life of the Carmelites and no monographic work dealing with different aspects of the musical culture of the order has been written. Finding materials containing information about the presence of music in this religious milieu and analysing them would facilitate comparative research in the future. Therefore, in 2021–2022, preliminary research on the musical culture of the Order of Carmelites in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was carried out. The main aim of this article is to indicate the types of sources for researching the musical culture of the Carmelites, and to describe them in a synthetic way. In the article, both music sources and non-musical documentation are identified. There are two groups of music sources: manuscripts containing compositions that most likely featured in the repertoire of the Carmelite ensembles, as well as some musical works created by Carmelite composers. Other documentation is discussed in the article, for example, books of provincial chapters and files of visits, books of admissions to the novitiate, religious professions, liber vitae and registers of the dead, monastery and fraternity accounts, and inventories. At the end of the article, research perspectives are suggested. Their processing and cataloguing were started in 2019. The cataloguing process has ended, and the collection is now open for research. This article describes the types of materials that can been found in the collection—books, sheet music and other documents, the contents of the collection, the represented theatre and music genres and authors, as well as the historical evidence found—autographs, notes left by directors, prompters, conductors, and other theatre artists. Rare editions and manuscripts found, as well as first editions, are also discussed. The collection, as a historical source, provides new opportunities for further research of the activities of the Riga City Theatre and its artists, especially as this theatre can be viewed not only narrowly as a German cultural phenomenon in pre-independence Latvia, but much more broadly as a cultural institution that has successfully entered the European theatre scene. He also appointed Antonín Borový, a university educated teacher, who went on to dedicate fifty years of his life to teaching in the school. Given that a cantor's responsibilities at that time also included leading the church choir and securing the musical accompaniment for church services, Borový built up a significant music collection throughout his lifetime, of which 452 compositions have been preserved. The collection is now predominantly housed in the National Museum – the Czech Museum of Music in Prague and at the Český Krumlov branch of the State Regional Archive in Třeboň. The notes on the covers of the sheet music, which provide precise information about the performance dates for each composition, its origin and orchestration, constitute the Borový collection's greatest contribution. These notes also enable us to have some idea of the repertoire of the rural choir, the ways in which the repertoire was disseminated, and music performance practice at the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Borový's documentation is unique in this regard, as reports of musical performances of Czech choirs and specific repertoire choices have only been preserved sporadically. Borový also composed about twenty of his own works, which are, however, compositionally inferior. He also maintained a school chronicle written in Czech, to which he added information about school celebrations. All the sources document musical life in the Czech countryside, in which cantors, who trained entire generations of famous musicians, played an irreplaceable role for centuries. As far as their value as a source for questions of musical philology is concerned, these musical manuscripts are of interest to those searching for unknown compositions and versions. The album of the pianist, composer, and Cologne music director Ferdinand Hiller (1811–1885) is a bundle with over 350 entries. In addition to verses, mottos, letters, and drawings, it includes a total of 146 autographs of music from the period between 1825 and 1884, dating back to composers such as Johannes Brahms, Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, Gioachino Rossini, Robert Schumann, and many others. On the one hand, they are quotations from piano and instrumental works, from operas and symphonies, furthermore canons, on the other hand complete compositions, especially piano pieces, and songs.
