This paper first discusses design alternatives which avoid these disadvantages. Essential improvements can be reached by a new validation scheme which is called snapshot validation. The paper then discusses a validation scheme which especially supports read transactions, so that the number of backups decreases substantially. Finally a very simple solution for the starvation problem is presented. Recently, there has been some debate on which strategy is better. Although previous work has shown that in a failure-free environment, the CL algorithm performs better than the DL version, there are still some doubts about the performance of the CL algorithm in an environment where failures could occur. Thus, in this paper, the performance of a resilient CL algorithm is compared with that of a resilient DL algorithm in an environment where site failures could occur. The results show that the resilient CL algorithm still outperforms the resilient DL algorithm in terms of mean response time of transactions, resource utilization and communication cost. This algorithm allows a process to request many resources simultaneously. While a centralized scheme is superior to a completely distributed scheme in terms of performance, a major problem of such a scheme is congestion. Therefore, an important extension to the basic CDDMOR, a partially distributed scheme, is proposed to alleviate the problem of congestion, as well as to take advantage of the result presented by several researchers that global (multisite) deadlocks are infrequent. The first organization introduces a load-balancing scheme whereby overflow records are stored temporarily in other primary buckets so that the allocation of overflow buckets are deferred. The second organization defers the physical splitting of underflow buckets, so that the records belonging to underflow buckets can be retrieved together. These two techniques are then combined together to form a new variation of Linear Hashing. It stresses the need for expert knowledge integration in database applications and distributed information usage. Of particular interest today is also the cooperation of artificial intelligence techniques and database technology. This paper presents a new method for database and knowledge base integrity control based on object-oriented concepts and on logic programming. It uses a novel technique for semantic integrity enforcement in database applications, based on the notions of object prototypes and database sample. A prototype is an incomplete object instance created dynamically in the database. It is representative of the family defined by an object declaration in the database schema. A database sample is a set of prototypes. This is in contrast to a data sharing multi-system approach in which all systems have direct access to the shared database. The performance of the function request shipping approach is examined and compared with the data sharing approach. The emphasis is on generic issues that affect the function shipping approach. Trace data from large mainframe systems running IBM's IMS database management system are used to illustrate the issues of partitioning. A methodology is presented for partitioning the databases and routing transactions among the systems so as to minimize the fraction of remote function calls, while balancing the load among systems. Estimates of the resulting remote function calls, mirror transaction setups, and multi-system two-phase commits, are obtained.
