These techniques are divided into two groups: the ones that improve efficiency of query execution (directly) and the ones that improve cost estimations for query execution strategies. Some of the proposed techniques utilize semantic information and knowledge acquisition to adapt to the environment. The latter, in contrast to the former, is not a well-established idea. This is a disturbing fact since knowledge acquisition can give significant improvements in performance of a query optimization algorithm. Performing analysis manually is extrernely time consuming and tedious. Therefore, some learning capacity should be added to the system. By accessing databases through this standard interface, Ada programs may be written in a consistent and transportable fashion, regardless of which underlying database management system (DBMS) ultimately provides actual database support. The Data Definition Language (DDL) serves three purposes, with all transformations automated to ensure consistency across uses: (1) it is standard Ada, so that data types defined therein may be \"with'ed\" into application programs, (2) it may be transformed into the DDL required by an underlying DBMS to define an application's database, and (3) it contains augmented information that enables it to be used to generate test data. The Data Manipulation Language (DML), while being standard Ada, is also as similar to SQL as permitted by Ada syntax, to provide all the power and flexibility of the language proposed as the ANSI relational standard. The basic method which is implemented, allows the clustering of tuples from a relation when they satisfy some predicate. The aim of this paper, is to show the flexibility of this method and the numerous possibilities of extensions. In addition, to the permanent access paths based upon physical clustering, predicate-trees allow the implementation of classical secondary access paths. We give a method to code the values of several secondary attributes by use of secondary predicate-trees. This method requires a less important storage volume than classical secondary indexes. Predicate-trees can also efficiently speed up the join operation. Clustering information is used to limit the join to relevant pairs of partitions. In EPS, a special purpose production interpreter, which directs the system to change its strategies in cooperation with strategic rules, is provided on top of a Conventional Production System (for short, CPS). Furthermore, a set of tactic rules which is appropriate for the strategy is selected from a rulebase and used in order that CPS can restrict search space under the current strategy. This has made EPS capable of following up various problem solving requirements flexibly. A reduction of the number of comparisons between the tactic rules and Short Term Memory (STM) has been attained by declaration of a rule subset appropriate for the strategy in each strategic rule. Especially, it is not possible to represent recursive rules which are denned on the basis of stored data (facts). Using the terminology of PROLOG, this means that database systems provide means for managing facts, but rules are not supported. The semantic gap, therefore, between conventional database systems on the one hand and knowledge base management systems on the other is too large. This paper presents new tools, based on a database programming language, which allow the support of rules on the basis of existing relations. These rules may be recursive, thus providing similar mechanisms as PROLOG does. The tools are set oriented, they allow, therefore, an efficient implementation. Moreover, some disadvantages of PROLOG are avoided, for example infinite recursion.
