The analysis is carried out on the material of media texts from modern English news articles. The correlation between the choice of language means for event representation and the author’s intention is analyzed. The hypothesis implies that it is possible to define correlation between complete / incomplete representation of situation model and the initial intention of the author of a media text. The study found that the author can use a limited set of model components with the aim of informing the reader - in this case the situation model can be represented with the help of such components as Setting and Scene, Participants, Act Sequence, whereas with the objective of not only informing but also having an impact on the reader the author represents a situation with the help of a full set of situation model components which, according to the theory of D. Hymes, include Setting and Scene, Participants, Ends, Act Sequence, Key, Instrumentalities, Norms, Genre. As a result, the conclusion can be drawn that an intention of the author defines the structure and the content of the event model represented in media text.","PeriodicalId":415120,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127946159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research of different concepts manifestation in unrelated languages has recently become widespread, and the comparative study of Buryat and Chinese in this regard is conducted for the first time. Translation dictionaries and electronic corpora of the languages were taken as sources for the material from which the necessary tokens were selected using continuous sampling method. To interpret the obtained examples in various contexts, we applied a general scientific method and comparative analysis techniques. As a result, it was discovered that despite the difference in the genesis and typology of Buryat and Chinese, common patterns in the concept expression were found. The common pattern is the differentiation by \"topological type\", which dictates the use of synonymous words to denote the thickness of objects with different geometric parameters. According to the topological parameter, the objects can be classified as relatively flat (zuzaan, Chinese 厚 hou) or relatively cylindrical (buduun and粗 si), and this can also be applied to the parameters of the human body. Another common feature is the expression of human fatness (fat) in correlation with domestic animals’ fatness degree: targan and 肥 fei. In this context, the definition of fatness has negative connotation.","PeriodicalId":415120,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130900127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article, this problem is studied from the standpoint of experimental phonetics. Pitch patterns of the general, and special questions are described. The experimental samples were simple sentences with one emphasis center. The material for the study was collected from 11 speakers of the Eastern dialect group of the Evenki language. The obtained results are the following. A typical intonation contour of the general question in the Evenki language is Rise. In the course of the experiment, it was found that in order to identify interrogation in the Evenki general questions, the rising intonation of the last syllable was essential. Special questions were characterized by the Falling pitch pattern with the nucleus on the verb. Our data differ from the ones previously obtained by N. Ya. Bulatova and L. Grenoble (1999) who found rising pitch on the sentence-initial question word.","PeriodicalId":415120,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127404570","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The material for the research was taken from regional printed and handwritten lexicographical sources on a subject of Kuban sub-dialects, as well data was collected during long-term dialect expeditions. The results demonstrate the variety of these mechanisms, which are based on actual observations by the sub-dialect speakers on behavior, peculiar appearance, voice, smell of animals and human actions in regard thereto. The amount and variety of selected tokens prove the significance of zoomorphic code in the Kuban region inhabitants’ world view. Ethnocultural conjoinings of set expressions were found, which provide insight into the unique nature of the villager’s world view. The analysis of discursive sources of origin of phraseological units with a zoonym component enabled to trace the birth of a new cognitive structure as a result of conceptualisation of human knowledge. It was demonstrated, that meanings of Kuban phraseological units, being the product of cognitive and discursive activity of sub-dialect speakers, unite the results of sensuous impressions and pragmatist perception of the world around us.","PeriodicalId":415120,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133760656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Continuous sampling was used to select 65 informational articles from 2 American journals – “Time” and “Newsweek” that served as the material for the study. Morphological, syntactical and lexical means of reality and irreality manifestation were identified and further interpreted using grammatical, semantic and contextual analysis. The obtained results indicate the following. The modality category in the news discourse was realized in 5 particular meanings: 1) actuality in present usual situations; 2) actuality in present current situations; 3) actuality related to the past; 4) reality in a broad sense; 5) irreality. It can be explained by the author’s aim to provide updated detailed informing of readers about any significant event. Describing this or that event, the author intentionally chooses morphological, syntactical and, very rarely, lexical means which give an opportunity to reveal subjective evaluative attitude amid the objective narrative that makes up the modality category. A major morphological means was a tense-aspect verb form. Syntactical instruments involved various interrogative constructions including parallel ones.","PeriodicalId":415120,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115396186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its essence lies in the methods of understanding the semantic content of adjectives and establishing internal connections between their meanings. Cognitive metaphor as a key working mechanism can clearly explain the phenomenon of Russian adjectives polysemy. This study uses the theory of cognitive metaphor that contains many working mechanisms affecting the change in the lexical semantics of adjectives. Among them, semantic transfer between cognitive domains is one of the most typical and active mechanisms. The present study is based on two original cognitive domains: the domain of space and the domain of physical perception. Under the cognitive effect of transferring from the original domain to other domains, adjectives acquire different meanings. This research focuses upon Russian polysemous spatial adjectives and adjectives of physical perception...","PeriodicalId":415120,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114602152","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite a considerable number of works that study zoological vocabulary, the uncertainty of a number of terms and a certain arbitrariness of the use of terms and concepts associated with animal names is still present in onomastics, e.g. \"zoonym\" and \"zoomorphism\" refer to such concepts. The purpose of the article is to clarify the terminological meaning of these concepts, to generalize and systematize the basic research on the theory of zoonymic nominations. The research methodology was formed on the basis of theoretical positions in the field of onomastics and the theory of nominations in modern linguistics. As a result of the theoretical analysis the following findings were made. First, the terms \"zoonym\" and \"zoomorphism\" are not synonymous. \"Zoonym\" is a more general term than \"zoomorphism\". Zoomorphism represents zoological names of anthropological nature, attributing the traits associated with the image of an animal to a human. Zoonyms do not have such attributes. \"Zoonim\" is proposed to be the general term. Another finding was that the functioning of zoonyms and zoomorphisms in the literary text is influenced by the genre of the text, which is expressed in the genre determinism of the lexical composition of zoonyms nominating animals.","PeriodicalId":415120,"journal":{"name":"Theoretical and Applied Linguistics","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125916481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
