In Zimbabwe there is a need to improve the yield of onions on garden size areas utilizing locally available materials thereby avoiding purchased inputs which are often unavailable or inaccessible due to no supply or prohibitive price. The present study investigates the effects of trash grass and sawdust mulches in combination with organic and inorganic fertilizers on onion growth and yield. When the two mulching materials were compared, trash grass mulch favored the growth of onions more than sawdust mulch. Mulching improved soil water retention capacity, improved soil structure and suppressed weeds. These features played a significant role in the performance and ultimately the yield of onions. Similarly, total plant weight, aerial leaf weight, bulb weight and yields plot were also higher for samples taken from plots with trash grass mulch than those mulched with sawdust. This work also sought to evaluate mulching materials and fertilizer types on the various components of the onion plant at different stages of development and hence their contribution to the final yield. Trash grass in combination with organic and inorganic fertilizer the final yield improved by 160% and 310%, respectively. As for sawdust, final yield improved by 103% and 275% for combinations with organic and inorganic fertilizer respectively. The effect of fertilizer types alone on the growth and yield of onions was less dramatic than that of mulch.","PeriodicalId":413709,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Innovations in Agricultural and Social Sciences )","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133218211","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The field experiment was carried out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) having four replications. The sub plot size was kept 5m x 2.7m having 6 rows with 0.45 m apart. Four levels of nitrogen (0, 33, 66 and 100 kg ha-1) and five levels of decapitation stress (no stress, 5cm, 10, 15 and 20 cm) were used in the experiment using cultivar Oscar. Recommended dose of Phosphorus in the form of SSP were applied at the rate of 60 kg ha-1respectively. From the results it is observed that rapeseed cultivar positively responded for seeds pod1, thousand seed weight (g), biological yield (kg ha-1), seed yield (kg ha-1) and oil yield (kg ha-1)to N levels and maximumseeds pod-1 (23 seeds), thousand seed weight (3.59 g), biological yield (10310 kg ha-1), seed yield (1169 kg ha1) and oil yield (600 kg ha-1) was observed in plot treated with 100 kg N ha-1. Whereas minimumseeds pod-1 (15 seeds), thousand seed weight (2.41 g), biological yield (6725 kg ha-1), seed yield (923 kg ha-1) and oil yield (401 kg ha-1) was recorded in control plot. Similarly highest seeds pod-1(22),thousand seed weight (3.3 g), seed yield (1099 kg ha-1) was noted in no decapitation stress inserted plot followed by 20 cm stress inserted plot while promising biological yield (9025 kg ha-1), and oil yield (568 kg ha-1) was recorded in 15 and 20 cm decapitation stress inserted plot. On the basis of the result it is concluded that decapitation stress with 100 kg N ha-1 produced highest seed and oil yield with green chop and recommended for higher seed, oil and biological yield in the rainfedagro- climatic condition of swat valley.","PeriodicalId":413709,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Innovations in Agricultural and Social Sciences )","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122735433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A study was carried out to evaluate the effect of different NPK fertilizer rates on the growth and yield of two maize hybrids during autumn season, 2012 in agro-ecological conditions of Faisalabad, Punjab-Pakistan. Two maize hybrids namely Monsanto-6789 and Pioneer30Y87 were tested using different fertilizer rates viz., F1 (200:100:90 kg NPK ha), F2 (250:125:110 kg NPK ha ), F3 (300:150:130 kg NPK ha) and F4 (350:175:150 kg NPK ha). Treatments were arranged in randomized complete block design under factorial arrangement replicated thrice. Results revealed that increasing the level of fertilizer up till F3 enhanced the crop yield and its related attributes. Maximum 1000-grains weight (255.4 g), grain yield (6.9 t ha) and biological yield (20.97 t ha) were observed in F3 (300:150:130 kg NPK ha). Whereas, among different hybrids, Pioneer30Y87 outperformed Monsanto-6789 regarding number of grain rows per cob, cob diameter, grains per cob, 1000-grains weight and grain yield. On interactive basis, Pioneer-30Y87× F3 proved the best combination regarding all studied attributes. Furthermore, highest economic net benefits were also associated with the same treatment combination. Conclusively, of the factors included in this study, maize hybrids and NPK fertilization treatments were dominant in determining grain yield as well as its related components, suggesting that cultivar selection and optimum fertilization are effective strategies to improve grain yield. However, multi-location and multi-year studies are required to test these results using different cultivars under varying soil and climatic conditions.","PeriodicalId":413709,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Global Innovations in Agricultural and Social Sciences )","volume":"220 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130343580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
