Emphasis was given particularly to enforcing of asset’s mechanical withstand capability based on scrutinized analyses of loads experienced during past emergency events. Increasing withstand of critical structures was selectively made. This paper gives an overview of various essential long-term activities and shows the level of new developments achieved after encountering bitter experiences during last decade. The paper deals also with assessing loading limits of selected essential network components aiming to reduce system vulnerability during emergencies hence increase its resilience. Majority of the experienced emergencies were produced by harsh weather impacts in the wintertime. There were many cases of OHL failures, which triggered in the aftermath scrutinized analyses aiming to determine the mechanical loads, encountered. Suitable refurbishing of OHL critical parts have been done respecting new standards. Aiming to allow for expedite restoring of OHL operating capability in emergencies the introduction of Emergency (modular) towers usage was selected and successfully implemented. Owing to the notorious fact, that OHLs’ and power transformer’s loading limits can be extended, several projects were launched to assess, evaluate and eventually up-grade the limit capacity implementing advanced monitoring equipment. Intensive support to asset management was done, such as maintenance optimization, state-of-the-art approach, condition monitoring of HV equipment, assets life cycle assessment and evaluation, etc. One of all-important steady processes remains to encourage the political decision makers to support the erection of new facilities notably OHL through simplifying and facilitating the spatial planning procedure (OHLs Right of Ways!) as well as mediating the social public-private dialogue. All these endeavors being in favor of upgrading the power system resilience.","PeriodicalId":413577,"journal":{"name":"2018 AEIT International Annual Conference","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131960706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, the climate change due to global warming implies higher frequency of these critical events, also in unusual areas. This context pushed the Italian Regulatory Authority to solicit distribution and transmission system operators to plan grid resiliency improvements. To this purpose, e-distribuzione developed differentiated methodologies, described in this paper, in order to evaluate the resilience of its electrical grid versus extreme snowstorms, windstorms, tree fall and heat waves.","PeriodicalId":413577,"journal":{"name":"2018 AEIT International Annual Conference","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134356071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper the impact of MVDC links on distribution networks was evaluated with OPF (Optimal Power Flow) analyses either for a test distribution network and a real case study provided by Unareti SpA (an Italian Distribution System Operator - DSO). For the real case study, fault studies to check the adequateness of the existing protection systems to the proposed meshed network configuration were performed.","PeriodicalId":413577,"journal":{"name":"2018 AEIT International Annual Conference","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117203976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

References was made to ISO 14040:14044 [1–2]; the substation was studied in its overall form and each functional unit was then divided into assemblies representing the equipment. These last were analyzed based on the materials they are made of, evaluating their use, the weak points and the main characteristic of work, failure and maintenance. Based on the data provided by the companies producing the equipment and construction machinery and the data related to construction and maintenance of the system under evaluation, a total of 21124 processes were examined, with positive and negative contributions to the environment. The impact assessment model divides the emissions into 15 categories representing the 15 impact categories of interest for Terna. Then the phases of the life cycle of the entire substation were evaluated, identifying the most impacting. The examination of the “Global warming” category was examined to obtain the actual value of the kg of CO2 emitted during the substation’s life time. At the end of the evaluations, a constructive solution was provided that allows a lower incidence on the totality of impact categories studied and with interest in the “Global warming” category.","PeriodicalId":413577,"journal":{"name":"2018 AEIT International Annual Conference","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124428910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though this is the case, the phase-disposition PWM (PD-PWM) technique is a better choice as it is able to generate high-quality waveforms with a greater possibility of optimal switching. This technique suffers as it may provide uneven energy distribution among the submodules (SMs) and also non-uniform switch utilization. The use of carrier rotative PWM techniques as applied to MMC‘s will alleviate the problem of uneven energy distribution among the SMs, but the issue of non-uniform switch utilization still remains. A modified rotative PD-PWM (MRPD-PWM) technique is proposed in this paper, which retains the uniform energy distribution among the SMs while evenly distributing voltage distribution across SM capacitors. Moreover, this technique minimizes SM capacitor voltage ripple which can reduce the capacitance requirement in MMC-fed VSD applications. The performance of the proposed PWM scheme is compared with aforementioned PWM techniques for half-bridge submodule (HB-SM) based three-phase MMC in PLECS platform and verified experimentally under the same converter switching frequency.","PeriodicalId":413577,"journal":{"name":"2018 AEIT International Annual Conference","volume":"24 44","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120937158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From this point of view, self-validated computing techniques are very useful tools, allowing to intrinsically track data uncertainty effects into power system operation procedures. In this field, the use of Affine Arithmetic has been demonstrated to be one of the most promising research direction, since it prevents the typical error explosion phenomena affecting the standard range arithmetic-based computing frameworks. Starting from these considerations, the aim of this paper is to investigate the Affine Arithmetic-based Power Flow problem, which, by mean of the uncertainty bounds characterization, can provide additional information to the system operators in their decision making processes. The methodology will be tested on the 30-bus IEEE test network and the results will be validated by application of traditional sampling-based techniques.","PeriodicalId":413577,"journal":{"name":"2018 AEIT International Annual Conference","volume":"290 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117305697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The dynamic model has been derived for the PrInCE Lab experimental microgrid located at the Polytechnic University of Bari. This microgrid represents a hard test bed for dynamic stability studies since all its devices are interfaced through power converters, giving rise to an inertialess system. Dynamic models of the main microgrid energy sources have been developed within the DIgSILENT Power Factory software environment. Some ad-hoc experiments have been performed in order to fine tune the models' parameters and the microgrid model accuracy has been proven by several validation tests performed under different scenarios of load and generation.","PeriodicalId":413577,"journal":{"name":"2018 AEIT International Annual Conference","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124367608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
