Sus contribuciones al campo del Sufismo y la Filosofía islámica han contribuido a pintar un cuadro claro del paisaje espiritual e intelectual de la civilización islámica desde el siglo VII/XIII en adelante. Aunque, Chittick no está solo preocupado por las discusiones sobre pensamiento islámico como reliquias de la historiaintelectual premoderna. Su vasto conocimiento de la tradición intelectual moderna sirve como base desde la cual busca abordar una amplia variedad de asuntos contemporáneos. En este breve ensayo, destacaré los escritos de Chittick que versan sobre el sí dentro del contexto de su tratamiento de la cosmología. Más allá de emplear métodos obsoletos para mirar al universo y nuestra relación con él, Chittick sostiene que las enseñanzas cosmológicas tradicionales islámicas son justamente tan relevantes para la cuestión del sí hoy en día como lo fueron en el pasado. \u0000Abstract: William Chittick, currently professor of religious studies at the State University of New York (Stony Brook), is an internationally renowned expert on Islamic thought. His contributions to the fields of Sufism and Islamic philosophy have helped paint a clearer picture of the intellectual and spiritual landscape of Islamic civilization from the seventh/thirteenth century onwards. Yet Chittick is not simply concerned with discussions in Islamic thought as artifacts of premodern intellectualhistory. His vast knowledge of the Islamic intellectual tradition serves as the platform from which he seeks to address a broad range of contemporary issues. In this short essay, I will outline Chittick’s writingson the self within the context of his treatment of cosmology. Según el presente análisis, la búsquedade la Amada en las dos obras presupone la Ausencia y valora la Presencia como meta final del Amante; en segundo lugar, el vacío causado en la Memoria, por la ausencia de Niẓām y de Beatrice, se llena con evocaciones y recuerdos; finalmente, es el Indefinido espacio-temporal lo que permite a las dos obras de ser tan universales, sin otras referencias concretas que la Amada o, aún más, labúsqueda espiritual misma.Palabras clave: Sufismo. Amor divino.Abstract: The following article aims to compare and to bring into dialogue the Interpreter of Desires by Ibn ʿArabī and the Vita Nova by Dante Alighieri, under three aspects which are deeply represented in these two works: the concept of Absence, of Memory and Indefinite. According to this analysis, the quest for the Beloved, in both works, implies the Absence and values the Presence as the finalaim of the Lover; secondly, the void caused by the absence of Niẓām and Beatrice is fulfilled by the mnemonic faculty, thanks to evocations, souvenirs and memories; lastly, the space-time indefiniteness allows the works to be considered universal. Como bien lo ha sugerido Luce López-Baralt, la metáfora del “espejo pulido” de Ibn ʿArabī ofrece modos inesperados de entender la presencia constante de ojos, fuentes y reflejos en el Cántico Espiritual. Ambos autores describenla búsqueda de la unión con la divinidad como un proceso de autoconocimiento. Asimismo, la lectura de un texto a través del reflejo del otro saca a la luz significados que estaban ocultos antes del encuentro intertextual. Estos procesos espirituales y de lectura indican que la conciencia de lo ajeno (sea divino o humano) es indispensable para la revelación de la identidad propia.Palabras clave: Ibn ʿArabī. Intertextualidad.Abstract: This essay proposes a simultaneous reading of the writings of Ibn ʿArabī of Murcia (1165-1240) and St. John of the Cross (1542-1591) through the use of metaphor. As has been initially suggested by Luce López-Baralt, the metaphor of the “polished mirror” in the works of Ibn ʿArabī serves as a lens through which images of eyes, reflections, and fountains in the Cántico Espiritual reveal new semiotic possibilities in both texts. Just as, in the works of both authors, the search for union with the divine is also a journey of self-discovery, reading one text as a reflection of the other may reveal previously concealed meanings, implying in a broader sense how confronting the divine other as well as the religious other helps, in turn, to construct and reveal self-identity.Key words: Ibn ʿArabī.
