It is of significant interest both from the viewpoint of its grammaticalization paths and of a wide and rich variety of its lexical expression. The article discusses one of the main representatives of this lexical class in Swedish, the hard-to-translate verb orka, and its various counterparts in a Swedish-Russian parallel corpus. We propose a refined classification of acquisitive verbs in both languages and focus on several important components of acquisitive semantics, such as efficiency, volition, control and some others.","PeriodicalId":41301,"journal":{"name":"Scando-Slavica","volume":"69 1","pages":"3 - 24"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46272096","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author considers in detail Mandel'štam’s four poems to Anna Achmatova, which are quoted in the “Telephone”, and analyzes Achmatova’s memoirs, in which the entire text of the poem is recited immediately after the story of her break-up with the poet. On the basis of the motif analysis of the poem, the analysis of autoreminiscences, and the biographical context of the poem, the author arrives at the conclusion that Mandel'štam describes in the “Telephone” his own suicidal impulse that occurred after a telephone call from Achmatova, whom he had been courting in the winter of 1917–1918 and with whom there was a break-up in March.","PeriodicalId":41301,"journal":{"name":"Scando-Slavica","volume":"69 1","pages":"106 - 125"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48124287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Apart from the selection of the dialectal variants in *-m- rather than *-bh- shared by Germanic, and the substitution of the original *-h1 by an*-m-ending in the singular of the consonant and i-stems in both Baltic and Slavic, there is a discrepancy between the short i-vowel of the cognate languages and the Balto-Slavic evidence. Here a plural *-mīs with a long vowel must be assumed for both sub-branches, while Slavic presupposes a short-vocalic proto-form *-mĭ as opposed to Baltic where a long-vocalic *-mī may account for the entire material. The acute accentuation favours reconstructions with a laryngeal, i.e. sg. *-miH, pl. *-miHs, but where does this laryngeal come from, and why is it absent in the Slavic singular forms? It is here suggested that the starting point was the singular ending of the i-stems where the original *-ih1 was contaminated with the *-m-ending *-mi, yielding *-mih1 , further extended by *-s in the plural *-mih1-s. As a consequence of Kuiper’s Law by which a post-vocalic word-final laryngeal was subject to facultative deletion we arrive at the variants *-mi (Slavic) and *-mih1  > *-mī (Baltic).","PeriodicalId":41301,"journal":{"name":"Scando-Slavica","volume":"69 1","pages":"126 - 134"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47525051","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has the methodological aim of applying and evaluating a quantitative and qualitative mixed-methods approach for analyzing pre-modern Slavic textual culture. With respect to the quantitative part of the study, the authors make use of the Handwritten Text Recognition tool Transkribus in order to transcribe manuscripts and early printed books automatically and use these transcriptions for quantitative analysis. Qualitative analysis is conducted using established philological methods and visual inspection of the (digital) sources. The sources selected for this study are an East Slavic manuscript of the Church Slavonic Menology (March volume, first quarter of the 16th century) and the South Slavic Cyrillic Služebnik printed in Venice in 1519. Our study shows that quantitative and qualitative methods, when combined in a mixed-methods approach, complement each other in a way that leads to a deeper understanding of the sources investigated and thus of the linguistic development of Church Slavonic.","PeriodicalId":41301,"journal":{"name":"Scando-Slavica","volume":"69 1","pages":"25 - 38"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42303755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

What planners could not anticipate, however, was the considerable number of side-effects that their planning would lead to. Although planners could foresee much of the construction and control the number of houses, as well as decide who would live there, they could not control the ways in which the spaces they created would be used. Stairwells provide one of the six interesting cases of Soviet materiality analysed by Golubev. The first chapter focuses on the linguistic side of late socialism, a natural starting point for this work as it was productivist language that produced and reproduced much of Soviet elemental materialism. The language emphasized the technological superiority of the Soviet Union, connecting the bright Soviet future with different technological objects. It was Soviet superiority in technology that would guarantee the country a leading position vis-à-vis the West, but also provide Soviet society with widespread well-being. In a way, Soviet techno-utopianism was meant to transform the Soviet material world. Yet, as Golubev argues, it also provided numerous forms of self-expression. Overall, Golubev’s account of Soviet materiality is a welcome addition to scholarship on the late socialist era. While the Soviet Union is a long-gone ideologicalpolitical construction, its material side is still very much present in the daily life of people throughout the former Soviet territory. This further underlines the significance of Golubev’s study. It gives a voice to groups of people who often lacked an official voice. It is often the case in historical studies, especially with a politicized system like the Soviet Union’s, that the experiences of ordinary people are difficult to gather. In this, Golubev’s does a marvellous job, and a great service to Soviet studies more generally.","PeriodicalId":41301,"journal":{"name":"Scando-Slavica","volume":"69 1","pages":"136 - 139"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44229744","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
