In this relaxation system a virtual-human acts as a breathing coach and guides the user along with it using a series of breathing exercises. The core of the proposed design is a step ladder approach for optimising the difficulty level of the breathing exercises. We are using real-time optimisation to achieve a seamless and effective interaction between the human user and the virtual coach. For the user to have a personalised exercise, the coach adapts the exercise regime based on the user’s response. For a natural interaction experience, our virtual coach looks like a human, speaks in human voice and displays nonverbal gestures.","PeriodicalId":413003,"journal":{"name":"Electronic Workshops in Computing","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132755041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is sensitive, though, to language and is affected by the language’s structure and orthography. Also, there are non-reading difficulties that co-occur with dyslexia, such as memory problems and low levels of self-esteem. Due to the lack of research in the Arabic language, this study aims to understand the needs of Arab learners with dyslexia in order to design adaptive interactive educational tools (IET)s based on their needs. To this end, the common reading and non-reading difficulties of learners with dyslexia and the features that the special education teachers (SPET)s prefer to either add or avoid when designing any IET, were explored in schools in Saudi Arabia, from the SPETs’ perspective. It was found that vowel letter dyslexia and visual dyslexia are the most common reading difficulties and that dictation difficulty and attention deficit are the most common non-reading difficulties. Hierarchical and Modelling teaching strategies are the teaching approaches that, from the SPETs’ perspective, most improved the reading of learners with dyslexia. Finally, pictures and sounds should be used in the design of IETs, while using many colours and loud sounds should be avoided.","PeriodicalId":413003,"journal":{"name":"Electronic Workshops in Computing","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123177845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The linework is composed of tiny lettering, less than 1 mm in height, running in a continuous path throughout the design. Direct transcription of the text proved to be difficult. The print was digitised at 1200 dpi and image processing techniques were tried to follow the text lines and recognise the characters, but they were ineffective because of the irregularity of the writing. A software viewer was developed to facilitate navigation of the text on screen, with functions for enlargement, translation and rotation, and for constructing and editing a trajectory line following the path of the text. The text was fully transcribed and three sources were identified from the 1840s.","PeriodicalId":413003,"journal":{"name":"Electronic Workshops in Computing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115527405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The challenges are i) a lack of easy-to-use, low-cost solutions for acquiring all around, textured 3D models of small form-factor objects and ii) the inherent challenge of achieving engaging and connected virtual experiences for artefacts that are not visibly striking. The paper summarises the research challenges and outlines the research case study - a virtual reality experience for ‘cuneiform tablets’, ancient written records impressed on handheld clay ‘tablets’.","PeriodicalId":413003,"journal":{"name":"Electronic Workshops in Computing","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116994489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The creative aspects of this technology convergence offer exciting new opportunities for the visualisation, mixing and crafting of materials from the physical and digital worlds; real world objects can be 3D scanned, manipulated digitally, printed out using the 3D printing process, and painted in the real world to be used as set dressing on a virtual production set to be recorded on digital video. The real and digital states of objects have become fluidly interchangeable offering unprecedented creative control to artists to shape the world at will. This paper highlights some of the possible applications – beyond the mainstream usage in film and games production – that the convergence of these technologies offer based on case studies of select student and staff projects undertaken at The National Centre for Computer Animation at Bournemouth University, UK. These applications include, but are not limited to, creative art, photography, digital heritage and preservation, and customised applications for rehabilitation of patients.","PeriodicalId":413003,"journal":{"name":"Electronic Workshops in Computing","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117231886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, Small to Medium Enterprise (SME) developers often find DTAC itself ‘heavy going’. One criterion of DTAC is usability and SME developers need guidance on how to meet this criterion. My PhD is a four-part study to develop such guidance. Methods: (i) a scoping review of the methods of usability testing, (ii) development of a novel way of e mploying a usability scale, dividing it into discrete chunks to prevent “questionnaire fatigue”, (iii) development of a toolkit, (iv) application of the toolkit with SMEs. Results: (i) The scoping review identified 133 papers. (ii) The simpler way of administering the usability scale gave comparable results. (iii) I developed a toolkit that gives guidance on which testing method to employ, the number of participants, and the types of output. (iv) I have used the toolkit to guide three SMEs (two more in progress) in testing digital health technologies. Conclusions: The toolkit will aid SMEs in meeting DTAC criterion for usability. Further research is needed to refine and validate the toolkit and develop methods for evaluating new types of digital health applications such as virtual reality and voice interfaces.","PeriodicalId":413003,"journal":{"name":"Electronic Workshops in Computing","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126810799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal of our work is to investigate how a social robot should be programmed to deliver an effective public speech. Applying a mixed methods research design to collect quantitative and qualitative data, we have conducted a study, which compares a human speaker with a semi-anthropomorphic social robot speaker (the SoftBank Pepper robot). The robot was programmed to mimic the behaviour patterns of the human delivering the same speech. The study results show that the robot is perceived as intelligent and rational, which contributes to effective delivery of the message content. However, the robot struggles with actively engaging the audience and with establishing an emotional connection. In addition, the behavioural patterns that appear natural in the human speaker tend to be distracting in the robot. Suggestions for the improved design of robot public speakers are discussed, which include implementing rhetoric skills, exploiting and synchronising the robot ’s specific communication channels, and creating a robot persona.","PeriodicalId":413003,"journal":{"name":"Electronic Workshops in Computing","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126034381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
