Two British authors who are world famous specialists in Balkan history (Oxford University Professor J. Pettifer and M. Vickers, now a “free agent”) present to the public the history of the Prespa Lake region, which gained some fame after the signing of the Prespa agreement. This agreement ended the Macedonian name dispute, which dated back to 1991. The authors, who have an impressive scholarly background, show the results of more than 30 years of study of the region. The review provides an overview of the book, the translation of which into Russian is not only the desire of the monograph’s authors, but also our recommendation. The book makes a successful attempt to trace the complex history of a multi-ethnic and multi-religious microcosm around the lake owned by three countries: Albania, Greece, and North Macedonia. Primary attention is paid to the history of the inhabitants of the village of Psarades / Nivitsi in Greek Macedonia. This small settlement on the shores of the Prespa, with a long history of political upheavals, now, like the entire region, also faces environmental diffi culties – the problem of the lake’s shallowing clearly demonstrates new challenges for the inhabitants of this Balkan microcosm, which traditionally has been oriented towards fi shing. The authors use a wide variety of scientifi c methods for the description, analysis, and study of the Prespa region. Specifi c attention in this review is paid to the methods of studying ecological history.","PeriodicalId":412661,"journal":{"name":"Slavic World in the Third Millennium","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122584446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In love songs, we can distinguish several themes that accentuate the various phases of love from first love, to dating, to fulfilled or disappointed love. In this type of song, where the central theme is love, other motifs are also expressed that testify to the patriarchal society and its system of values, preferences, and the power of the authorities that influenced the life of the partner and the choice of the spouse. Songs of this type do not avoid the negative elements either — they include themes such as the struggle of marriage or alcoholism for men, whereas for women the most common themes are infidelity or the loss of virginity. Folk songs not only describe these situations in emotional, characteristic ways, but also take an attitude towards them that is consistent with the attitudes and laws of the society from which they originate. Therefore, we feel in them not only happiness and unhappiness, but also resignation and reconciliation with the situation, which is set up and supported by the system. The traditional patriarchal society in Slovakia, in which the songs originated and survived, has left its mark on love songs in an unmistakable way. Although indirect naming, euphemism, and aestheticization of negative phenomena are often used in accordance with the poetics of a love song, the informative value of the songs is obvious. While the understanding of the content of the lyrics of existing songs cannot be left unnoticed, the fact that songs about conjugal love in the Slovak environment are only recorded to a minimal extent is also significant. The content analysis of the songs, taking into account the wider social and historical context, provides insight not only about the reality of life, but also about the emotional attitude of the people who lived in the system that determined their fundamental life decisions.","PeriodicalId":412661,"journal":{"name":"Slavic World in the Third Millennium","volume":"174 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115199928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The events of the year 1968 in Karlovy Vary”. The Karlovy Vary municipal museum coincided its publishing with the fiftieth anniversary of the Prague spring which, considering the way of the presentation, turned the book not only to scientific event but also to the social one. The book describes sociopolitical trends in the region before the year 1968, the development of the reformist movement, the invasion and advance of the armies of the Warsaw Pact countries, and finally the decline of the reformist mood and the beginning of the normalization. Working on his writing, the author deeply studied the materials of the local archive and gathered the unique selection of the photographs depicting the passage of the soviet army through the spa town and the protest actions of its inhabitants. In the meantime, Nedvěd takes undue freedom with scientific terms, and his selection of historiography raises questions. The author bases his research on the Czech papers and scarcely uses the books of Russian origin. He also did not study the subject of the participating of the GDR’s army in the operation Danube, although these troops were concentrated on the borders of Karlovy Vary region as well. Because of this decision, there are no materials from German archives or historiography in the monograph. In general, the work lacks the width of studying its subject, but it definitively accomplishes the task of depicting the Prague spring from the regional perspective.","PeriodicalId":412661,"journal":{"name":"Slavic World in the Third Millennium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123180674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It should be noted that in both Soviet and modern Russian literature, issues related to contacts between the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia in the economic field are mentioned only fragmentarily. At the same time, the history of the consultations which were led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czechoslovak Republic and diplomatic and commercial representatives in Prague has been reflected in the works of Czech historians Z. Sládek, Z. Konečný, and F. Mainuš. As a result of this research, the diaries of Soviet ambassadors A. Ya. Arosev and S. S. Alexandrovskij and their reports to Moscow, which are held in the funds of the Foreign Policy Archive of the Russian Federation (“M. M. Litvinov’s secretariat” and “N. N. Krestinsky’s secretariat”), became the object of the research. The reports of the Trade mission of Soviet Union in Prague, as well as the preliminary projects of the agreement developed by Soviet and Czechoslovak diplomats (which are held in the fund “Ministry of Foreign Commerce of USSR” of the Russian State Archive of Economics), were also used. The study shows that the aspiration of both parties to settle mutual relations in this sphere was prompted by both economic and political motives. The signing of the agreement, which took place on 25 March 1935, allowed major contentious issues in trade between the two countries to be regulated. This event, along with the conclusion of an agreement on mutual assistance, marked the beginning of the new phase in the history of Soviet-Czechoslovak relations in the interwar period.","PeriodicalId":412661,"journal":{"name":"Slavic World in the Third Millennium","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122635178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This time the conference was held in a mixed format: at the Institute of Slavic Studies and on the ZOOM platform. As in previous years, in the history section young scientists from various cities took part: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kazan, Rostov-on-Don, and Prague (Czech Republic). The conference discussed a wide range of issues related to the history of Slavic countries and peoples: from the Late Middle Ages and early Modern Times to the beginning of the twenty-first century. The conference participants in their speeches touched upon the problems of imagology, national identity, the national revival of the Slavic peoples, the formation of their political, economic, and ecclesiastical institutions, and the development of national cultures. The variety of topics corresponded to the variety of sources: different authors used medieval literature, diplomatic and archival documents, newspaper articles, and even network media data in their research. The vast majority of reports aroused not only the interest of the listeners, but also a desire to discuss the speeches. The scholars of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, some of whom acted as moderators of individual subsections, also took part in the discussion. Thus, this year, as before, the young scholars’ conference “Slavic world: Community and diversity” was a valuable platform for the exchange of experience and the establishment of closer ties between various scientific institutions. The final results of the conference will be summarised with the publication of a separate collection of abstracts.","PeriodicalId":412661,"journal":{"name":"Slavic World in the Third Millennium","volume":"129 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122900962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The urgent task of Russian diplomacy was to prevent the participation of the Ottoman Empire on the side of Russia’s opponents in a possible war. Unfortunately, Russian diplomacy failed to cope with this task. Diplomatic documents attest to the existence of a Russian plan to create a Balkan Federation under the auspices of the Ottoman Empire. Russia’s efforts in this regard intensified after the Young Turk Revolution of 1908. In 1910, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was developing a plan for the possible unification of the Balkan states into a single Balkan Federation led by the Ottoman Empire. Serbia played an important role in the implementation of this program. This idea was developed by Nikolai V. Charykov, the Russian ambassador to Constantinople from 1909 to 1911. Russian diplomacy sought to smooth out the contradictions in the Balkans and normalise the relations of the young states with the Ottoman Empire. In 1911, the Russian Envoy to Constantinople, Charykov, negotiated with the Turkish leadership on the Russian-Turkish treaty, which, in particular, included the question of the Balkan Federation. This episode in Russian-Turkish relations went down in the history of diplomacy as the “Charykov demarche.” The formation of the Balkan Union and the Balkan Wars of 1912–1913 meant the failure of the Russian model of peaceful coexistence of the Balkan states as a confederation, including the autonomy of European Turkey. The reasons for this failure were discussed in their memoirs by two Russian diplomats Nikolai V. Charykov and Vassili N. Strandtmann, who gave years of diplomatic service in the Balkans, and who remained living there after escaping from revolutionary Russia.","PeriodicalId":412661,"journal":{"name":"Slavic World in the Third Millennium","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128737392","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
