This short-lived yet groundbreaking artist-run initiative operated from 1991 to 1996 at a time of momentous development for Singapore’s contemporary art scene. Yet compared to other art developments documented for this period, there is conspicuously little critical examination of the significance of 5th Passage. This article seeks to explore the array of reasons for the relative invisibility of 5th Passage in Singapore’s art history. Not merely a passive omission or forgetting, such invisibility includes conscious and unconscious suppression and censoring.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131522753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Publics for art have been under-studied in this region, and rarely discussed in more nuanced terms than as being a ‘general public’ or ‘ordinary people.’ The essay argues for the need for an alternate vocabulary and terms of reference for thinking and speaking about the reception of art: one that is theoretically informed by and engaged with the multiplicity of discourses and publics in this part of the world. The essay provides a brief survey of the sangha's role in the development of modern art in Southeast Asia, as a constitutive agent in the articulation of modernity since the mid-nineteenth century, and then concentrates on the engagement of monks with contemporary art, since the 1990s. Key examples discussed include activities organised by Sa Sa Art Projects in Phnom Penh since 2010; the collection and programming of the Buddhist Archive of Photography in Luang Prabang; the practice of artist Orawan Arunrak since 2015; and the historiography of the Chiang Mai Social Installation and related festivals held during the 1990s.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125166189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Taking a case-study approach, this paper re-assesses the relationship between the cultural and economics-driven desires of the nation-state in promoting ‘Singaporean-ness’ by taking into consideration the role and place of Singapore’s visual queer in mediating representations of nationality. By critiquing the instrumentalisation of contemporary art and visual culture as shaped by the ‘Global City for the Arts’ (GCA) plans, this article explores the contradictions in Singapore’s GCA aspiration in light of wider queer politics played out in socio-spatial and visual-cultural spheres, particularly where the suppression of non-normative subjectivities had involved the demolition of queer spaces, censorship of obscene objects and the proscription of performance art.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"356 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116240331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

His practice deems cooking ‘a process that occupies the immediate, the emergent and the local.’ For him it is a practice that provides ‘a meditative space for digesting and ruminating what is emerging.’ With this sentiment of converging as a framework for performative experiments, his art projects are events that center on cooking and how they convene ‘informal and oral settings’ such as eating together or meeting other people for drinks and how these constitute ‘potent spaces for generating particular kinds of knowledge.’ In Dayaw’s schema, hunger is one such kind of knowledge. In the issue, we read attentive gestures towards energies that tend to slip away in the ‘normative commitments’ of disciplines and ideologies, to include performance and gender that in the hands of less generous minds harden, even coarsen, into self-righteous advocacies or condense in echo chambers designated as areas of study.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130651639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper examines the recent curatorial phenomenon of restaging a new exhibitionary mode – the critical exhibition – that first emerged from in Southeast Asia in the 1970s. The restaged critical exhibition is proposed as a new type of exhibition that reinterprets, contests, and mediates between the multiple contexts of the present and the past that inflects on the future. The term ‘restaging’ is used to evoke the stage as a metaphor and a site of memory not to represent but reflexively present the processes of remembering through memory structures such as the interplay between the memorial and history that is contested, the making of new subjectivities and the archive that resists forgetting.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122024961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the most prominent concerns is the anti-communist mass killings of 1965–1966. In the absence of public discussion of the 1965–1966 events, contemporary art functions as an insightful prism for understanding the traumatic effects of the killings and reveals the highly nuanced and sometimes contradictory experiences generated by conflict and authoritarianism. This paper discusses the artworks of two Indonesian artists, Dadang Christanto and Tintin Wulia, to examine different trajectories of the representation of the 1965–1966 mass killings and the pluralities of trauma. By focusing on the intersection between witnessing and ethical spectatorship, the discussion explores how art practices introduce new ways of understanding and responding to historical trauma in Indonesia.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122974064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It seeks to open up new horizons and frameworks for understanding the particular character of art worlds and art publics in Southeast Asia by being especially attuned to the local contexts and histories of contemporary art in the region and their particular ecologies. We contend that while contemporary art worlds and art publics in Southeast Asia might bear similar structures and dynamics to contemporary art worlds and publics elsewhere, they are nevertheless indicative of culturally specific and localised developments. Indeed, the various past and present practices and mediation of art and its publics in the region are suggestive of the ways in which art worlds take on nuanced character and meaning in Southeast Asia, are diversely configured and imagined, and are multiply located and complexly interconnected. The worldliness of these practices are, moreover, indicative of the ways in which Southeast Asian artists continue to respond to the exigencies of the everyday and the political economy of survival in an increasingly challenging world.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124256047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The group in question – the Minangkabau of West Sumatra – has received attention throughout history due to the influence of artists active in Jakarta and Bandung in the mid-twentieth century and more recently, in Yogyakarta. By looking at the relationship that Minangkabau artists living outside of West Sumatra maintain with their counterparts in West Sumatra, this study examines the possibility of ethnicity as a vehicle through which a multi-sited local art world can be constructed, traversing geographic boundaries and complicating the continued hegemony of Java as Indonesia's centre of contemporary art production all the while rooted in its historical origins.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"52 205 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125950478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This consolidation has engendered a burst of scholarly activity, in line with the improving prospects of Asian art history generally and notwithstanding a lack of dedicated academic structures where the region is concerned. But if Southeast Asia has firmed as a framework for organising contemporary art, it has not been favoured as a basis for interpreting or historicising it. As knowledge production in the region has surged, regionalism has waned. In this article, I review the historiography of Southeast Asian contemporary art to reveal a discontinuity between its pioneers, who were regionalists, and a new historicism whose premises are basically nationalist. Reflexive consciousness of region – and of contemporaneity as a regional phenomenon – is advanced as an under-utilised interpretive device and a bulwark against hegemonic and monolithic art histories.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"376 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132334569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite the popularity of miniatures, little scholarly attention has been paid to the reasons behind the fascination. In this article, I review and compare previously unconnected theories from various disciplines – including anthropology, art theory, literary studies, and others – and discuss different theses as to why people feel drawn to miniatures. I commence with a summary of rather affective aspects that have been proposed to explain miniatures' appeal and follow this with a discussion of values engulfed in miniatures and an account of more cognitive aspects. As the discussion progresses, ten theses are developed in response to the question of what makes miniatures so appealing. These include: scaling effects, admiration of craft, the illusion of control, empathy and indulging in ideal worlds, notions of tension related to miniatures’ elusiveness, learning from the model, and offering criticism. The conclusion draws these insights together and argues that the concepts of easy-access art, enchantment, craft appreciation, idealization, and multifarious vantage points are useful to help explain why people are fascinated by miniature models.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-07-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122050136","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
