By using the conceptual framework of ‘The West and the Rest’ developed by Stuart Hall and of ‘coloniality of seeing’ by Joaquín Barriendos, I analyze the paradoxes of the classifications that underpinned the selections of the Brazilian artists for the show. In light of the trajectories of artists (Mestre Didi, Ronaldo Rego and Cildo Meireles) and the Brazilian cultural context, I discuss the process of their selection, the meanings of the artworks they displayed and the complex network of agents and discourses that contributed to the construction of the global discourse present in Magiciens. The second part of the article explores the ‘non-Western’ artists’ opinions regarding the exhibition and how they dealt with the neo-colonial gaze underpinning the event. I assess the artists’ reception of the French curatorial gaze, what Magiciens meant to them and how it has reverberated in their careers, including their relationship with the art market. I argue that the selection of these three artists refers to essential developments in Brazilian art in the 1980s. At the same time, it exemplifies the complexities of the exhibition and the myths about global art that persist up until the present day.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"69 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130147465","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These artists document not only urban landscapes as such, but also the ideas, lifestyles and creative forms of expression of different generations of Indonesians, including artists themselves. I argue that the urban visualisations demonstrate the opportunities for and limits to social engagement in Indonesian art at different points in time. They also provide insight into the relevance of the very idea of a ‘generation’ in Indonesian social and intellectual history. I examine in detail how S. Sudjojono’s urban paintings have visualised Jakarta’s changing material infrastructure in the 1960s, the emergence of visual artists and literary authors who would become known as the ‘Generation of ‘66,’ as well as the artist’s doubts about his own artistic and ideological development. I compare his work with the representation of Jakarta’s intensified urbanisation in the 1970s and 1980s in the paintings of Srihadi Soedarsono and Dede Eri Supria. I also examine how other artists and art collectives from the same period expressed social commitment through spatial interventions and creative collaborations with local communities, NGOs and governments. Finally, I examine artists and art collectives since the 1990s, who have emerged as both members and critics of the Millennial generation. I specifically focus on the work of Adi Yuswantoro and Agan Harahap, who critically evaluate and visually refer to the art and ideals of Sudjojono.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"99 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114893692","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is also the case for climate change. Art may have a greater role to play in advancing societal resilience across these different categories of shocks and risks. In this Intervention, we deploy and evaluate art as a social practice supporting societal responses to sea level rise and its impacts. Our evaluation is focused on the ways in which the open-ended, deliberately unusual juxtaposition of art and science can accelerate fundamental adjustments in responding to complex climate risks such as climate mobility threats, under simultaneous stressors such as COVID-19. Through art, we explore science–society interactions, using Miami as a globally relevant case study. Our critique identifies outcomes of the perhaps radically interdisciplinary approach, including the integration, passion, and dialogue enabled and enriched through art.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"234 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120875564","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The essay makes explicit the consequences of treating collective style as such a source in archaeology and anthropology of art, and further develops a new framing for the idea that avoids the criticisms largely responsible for the decline in theoretical interest in the epistemic import of visual style analysis since World War II. This re-framing proposes that inference from style to context is permissible on those occasions when a collective style signals by its morphology its suitability to serve a certain function. And it does so because it prescribes publicly certain modes of behavior or spectatorship. Furthermore, the public nature of the signaling may be such that it allows even uninitiated spectators to get a sense of it and thus to gain access to some of the motivations and norms informing the collective's form of life.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"14 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116430218","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, it is unclear how effective they are in making viewers consider climate change as important. To assess their reception, this research studies and compares AIVs in relation to four additional visual forms, which are common in the communication of climate change (information visualizations, news photos, digital art visuals and cartoons). Qualitative research consisting of a short survey, q-sort and semi-structured interviews was employed. Some AIVs were judged clearer and more agreed with than other AIVs, suggesting that a less abstract AIV style might be more suitable. In comparison to the other visual forms, the artistic information visualizations were the least effective in making viewers consider climate change as important. It appears that artists’ free choice of data focus and artistic styles faces limits when depicting a complex topic such as climate change. A need for clarity or accompanying descriptions to the visualizations, at least when targeted at the general public without art training, might be necessary. The study did not show distrust in art’s involvement in the climate change discourse.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125871670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This phenomenon is intrinsically related to the elusiveness of the colonial subject due to the complex postcolonial conditions in the region. What became the subject for the camera was already disappearing as it was being caught, a situation conditioned by shifting cultural and political identities. Not only is the local subject hard to see, it keeps adjusting in response to different authoritarian powers. My thesis is that early intermedia art works, particularly in their way of reflecting cultural discourses, are formed with an understanding of the impossibility of catching the present moment. As the shutter itself is an imperialist convention, particularly at the margin of the Sinosphere, the artists employ their bodies and performative methods to dissolve the monolithic power of the camera. In addition, early experimental theater provides anti-institutional contexts for intermedia experiments, which also offered technical support and avant-garde networks.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130446849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The predominant theme, a young African child, is examined as vernacular imagery. He uses the motif of the African child to reflect on different, often painful, experiences he had growing up in rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Selected paintings were analysed for their formal content and contexts, and the discussion is framed by insights gained through interviews with the artist. The works powerfully evoke the hardships of children growing up in the impoverished rural areas in South Africa. It is argued that Sithole’s recurrent portrayal of black African children engages a discourse that contributes to global contemporaneity.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121757846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It seeks to situate the curatorial practice under the notion of nationalism and cryptocolonisation in relation to its social history. It explores three main parts: first the birth of curatorial practices in relation to the museum and exhibition in Siam since the late nineteenth century showing how, during the colonial period, Siam used these as cultural diplomacy tools, to present herself as independent from the colonial West and to engage with the world. Second, it asks what role the state played in using exhibitions and fairs to promote and introduce the modern concept of ‘constitution’ after the radical shift from absolute monarchy to constitutional monarchy in 1932, and the making of public art in the early twentieth century. Third, it looks at how the art institutions and curatorial practices emerged yet became absent in the context of local and regional modern and contemporary art scene. How did contemporary art curatorial practices reconnect and engage with the global art scene during the period of globalisation, which seemed to be progressive and transnational? It also explains how Thailand’s ongoing political turbulence and the lack of freedom of expression has unfortunately hindered the local contemporary art scene, despite the increasing amount of public and private support.","PeriodicalId":412489,"journal":{"name":"World Art","volume":"20 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120842910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
