{"title":"Narrative Agency in Maurice Blanchot’s Récits? A Case Study on Death Sentence and Awaiting Oblivion (I)","authors":"A. Ionescu","doi":"10.60133/pj.2023.1.14","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.60133/pj.2023.1.14","url":null,"abstract":"This article investigates a type of narrative that is unacknowledged by classical narratology and hardly included in postclassical narratology studies: that of lyrical and philosophical prose, often containing elements belonging to the dramatic genre. Starting from Brian McHale’s urge to address Monika Fludernik’s exclusion of poeticity from narratology and Jan Alber’s inclusion of any poem in narrativity, I use different definitions and clarifications from classical and postclassical narratology (Vladimir Propp, Greimas, Roland Barthes, Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan, Sarah Drews Lucas, Gerald Prince, James Phelan, Peter Hühn, Jens Kiefer, Hanna Meretoja, Rachel Blau DuPlessis, John Shoptaw, Samuel Caleb Wee, Roy Sommer, Manfred Jahn, Roland Weidle), also bringing elements on agency from drama (via Martin Esslin’s notion of the “Theater of the Absurd”) in order to find the best tools to explain how Blanchot’s Death Sentence and Awaiting Oblivion elude narrative agency. On the one hand, these récits challenge the usual borders between literature and philosophy and, on the other hand, they refuse taxonomic boundaries such as what we understand by literary genres. Thus, my article focuses on the lack of narrative agency in these texts, a notion that is paradoxically connected to the affirmation of passion and passivity, which characterizes the experience of literature and death alike, often in the form of the neuter. I relate Blanchot’s neuter to Emmanuel Levinas’s il y a and I discuss the formula “X without X” as not purely privative but as a pre-critical notion which Blanchot used in order to emphasize the divide passion/passivity/action/activity. While in my discussion of Death Sentence, I define the unnarratable and the difference between the two stories that make it up, completing each other and taking the reader from the realm of life to the realm of death and back to life, in the section on Awaiting Oblivion, I deal with the philosophical language and dramatic devices of the text. {"title":"Vittorio Alfieri e la lingua “classica” di Simeon Marcovici: alcune considerazioni metodologiche sulle traduzioni dell’Oreste e del Filippo","authors":"Federico Donatiello","doi":"10.60133/pj.2023.1.12","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.60133/pj.2023.1.12","url":null,"abstract":"\"The most representative Romanian translations of the 19th century can be the subject of an aesthetic-rhetorical study, which, usually, we would devote to an original literary work. Because of their experimental character, the translations are closely linked to the contemporary “language question”: thus, they offer a tool to observe the evolution of literary Romanian in those crucial decades. In other words, we can consider translations as a ground for the reception of Western models and the development of modern literary language. In this study, we propose overcoming the two most popular approaches to Romanian translations: the exclusively lexicographical one, which mainly focuses on the collection of data related to the neological lexicon: the exclusively historical-sociological one, which considers translations as historical-literary and socio-cultural documents without dwelling on the aesthetic-rhetorical values of the literary text. On the contrary, the value of such translations lies not only in their being (useful) witnesses to certain linguistic forms or certain sociological and historical contexts, but in the fact that they are autonomous literary texts. Composed exclusively of translations of literary works and technical texts, Marcovici’s output is a typical example of the extraordinary phenomenon of Romen translations in the first half of the nineteenth century. His prose translations of two of Alfieri’s tragedies, Oreste and Filippo, in a volume published in Bucharest in 1847, mark one of the high points of interest in Alfieri’s output in the Romanian nineteenth century. Such a late interest in an eighteenth-century author like Alfieri, who had played so much part in the Italian, Greek, and Romanian Enlightenment and Preromantic temperament, often cloaked in anti-Tyrannical nationalism, should not be surprising. Marcovici’s entire cultural activity shows a strong “anachronistic” inclination toward neoclassical themes, also motivated by his being professor of rhetoric at the College of St. Sava. For Marcovici, literature is not only to be considered in the same way as a “school of moralization”, but also a model for the correct use of literary language. It follows, therefore, that there should be a determined fidelity to the needs of popularization, to the “simple” style, to the naturalness of vocabulary and to the minimization of the needs of overdeveloped rhetorical language. In the first part, we analyze the arguments formulated by Petru Creția in Testamentul unui eminescolog and introduce three methodological principles that could serve for a new division of the material, the integration of technical solutions and the design of interface functions. In the second part, we present the arguments for dividing the early texts into two categories, corresponding to the two major sequences of Eminescu’s biography: a first phase, between 1866 and 1883, encompassing full creativity, and a second phase, covering the period 18831889, from the onset of his illness until his death. Then, we highlight the symbolic importance of the last poem published before his breakdown. Indeed, Doina is an emblematic text for Eminescu’s creativity, but it has generally been occulted by the exegesis for ideological reasons. Their memoirs and autobiographical works have become representative of post-communist life writing, promoting debates on trauma, memory, and resistance strategies. However, life writing scholars have not explored the textual strategies employed by writers to construct their ego-resilient Self, namely, their capacity to adjust to challenging circumstances. To instantiate the case, Romanian memoirs and transcribed interviews have been selected for the corpus given the highly repressive nature of the Romanian communist regime. The project pursues the following two research objectives: (a) to examine the textual strategies employed by narrators in their construction of ego-resiliency and (b) to analyse the historical specificities of Romanian communism while expanding knowledge on this totalitarian regime. Contribuţii etimologice, lexicale şi gramaticale","authors":"Adrian Chircu","doi":"10.60133/pj.2023.1.01","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.60133/pj.2023.1.01","url":null,"abstract":"\"In the current study, the author aims to continue the detailed analysis of the inherited Latin adjectives used adverbially in Romanian in order to highlight the lexical-semantic and functional features of the word adevăr ‘really’ in the ancient period, when it had different uses. The starting point for the analysis was some previous contributions, in whose pages aspects concerning adjectives with similar morphosyntactic behavior have been described, some of them, at that time, being presented sequentially, revealing the typological characteristics of the class and less the morphological or the phraseological (implicitly prepositional) variation of each lexical unit. The choice of this adverbial adjective as the main topic of the current analysis is also explained by the fact that, in ancient texts, its number of occurrences was relatively significant because it was often found in the structure of adverbial phraseological units. For a proper interpretation, the author uses a corpus of ancient language (SOR Corpus), which facilitates an objective analysis of language facts. It also refers to similar studies and dictionaries of Romance languages to show the similarities between them, more exactly similar uses, confirming the unity of the Neolatin idioms regarding the adverbials. In this paper, the author will prioritise several perspectives: the etymological, the Romance, the morphological, the structural and the syntactic. The main aim is to illustrate the dynamics of this adverb in the ancient language, which was, naturally, much more striking than nowadays. The anonymous Slavonic-language chroniclers of the earlier period say nothing about themselves and the purposes of their creation but enter directly into the heart of the narrative. Instead, Macarie, the first author who signs his work, finds it appropriate to open it with an embryonic preface, in which he talks about himself and the patron, discusses the Moldavian annalistic tradition, clarifies his personal writing experiences and stylistic criteria. Along his lines, the disciples Eftimie and Azarie specify the chronological framework of their exhibitions, glorify the commissioning voivodes and recall the activity of their venerable master. Grigore Ureche, the first historian to use his mother tongue, prefaces his work with brief remarks in which he discusses a theme congenial to him, the educational value of history. In the introduction to De neamul moldovenilor, Miron Costin argues for the need to pierce the darkness around the origins of the Romanian people and expresses himself not only on the uplifting value of literary writing, but also on the aesthetic one. In the joint introduction to his chronicle and collection of legends O samă de cuvinte, Ion Neculce dwells on the late development of the Moldavian historiographical tradition and underlines the edifying value of his commitment. The morphological contrast between the variants that take an article and the ones that do not shows their similar distribution on the map, specifically in southern and western Germany, in the states of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, Hessen and North Rhine-Westphalia, in the areas of important industrial and university centres such as Munich, Nuremberg, Augsburg, Ingolstadt, Stuttgart, Freiburg, Mannheim and Frankfurt. This picture of the spread of Romanian surnames derived with the suffix -ean(u) is similar to that of the surnames ending in -escu, as well as to that of other foreign surnames, such as the Turkish, Italian, Portuguese or Greek ones, which proves the settlement of immigrants in the same highly industrialized areas of Germany. The most frequent surnames ending in -ean(u) in Germany are Muntean(u) (88+80), Ardelean(u) (65+14), Mărginean (23), Ungurean(u) (21+31), C(î|â)mpean(u) (18+11), Oltean(u) (12+22). Historically, the Romanian names derived with the suffix -ean(u) appear in the 15th century (e.g. Coman Făgărășanul 1437–1446), are derived from toponyms and indicate the place of origin of the first named. {"title":"Corectarea greșelilor și oferirea de feedback în predarea online a limbii române ca limbă străină","authors":"Raluca Levonian","doi":"10.60133/pj.2023.1.04","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.60133/pj.2023.1.04","url":null,"abstract":"This paper analyses how written corrective feedback was provided during the online teaching of Romanian as a foreign language at an Italian university in the context of the coronavirus pandemic. The retrospective analysis focuses on the most common types of mistakes identified in the students’ homework and on the strategies applied by the author as the lecturer for Romanian language in the revision of the homework. The first part of the research aimed to identify and classify the errors appearing in the students’ texts, investigating the possible causes of the errors. The findings revealed that grammar errors were made more frequently by the students at beginner level, while lexical errors were made by students at an intermediate or advanced level of knowledge. Results also show that the teacher tended to use various types of corrective feedback, depending on the error type that was identified. The teacher’s feedback took different forms, ranging from simple error correction to extended comments and the proposal of alternative solutions. Moreover, the corrective feedback was offered directly for beginner students, while the corrections tended to be hedged when addressing advanced students, in order to avoid their discouragement. The students found the teacher’s feedback useful and even used the homework as a means to signal their difficulties with learning and ask for help. The sbornik was translated into Romanian two times: by an unknown translator in 1769 and by Vartolomei Măzăreanul, hegumen of Putna Monastery, in 1777. On the basis of the differences between the two translations, I argue that the first one represents the product of the activity of Paisius Velichkovsky’s monastic community from Dragomirna Monastery. This version was the most popular one, diffused in more than 40 Romanian manuscripts (20 complete and 26 partial). The collection interacts with non-standardized ascetico-mystical miscellanies (e.g. The Philokalia of Dragomirna) which contain writings on the Jesus Prayer, putting forth that the compilers perceived its content through the lens of the practice of the hesychast prayer.
