Weiss's first novel Am Weltenrand sitzen die Menschen und lachen (At the Edge of the World People Sit Laughing, 2018), concerns the relationships between humans, nature and technology in the Anthropocene — although Weiss himself takes critical distance from the term. The interview attempts to draw out some aspects of planetary-level insanity as they appear to Weiss. In his responses, the author elaborates on the literary challenges involved in narrating the enmeshment of subjectivity with fossil capitalism, virtual reality and ecological anxiety. He also emphasizes the centrality of encounters with other people and cultures — in short, with otherness — for his creative work.Abstract:Im Interview, das im Sommer 2022 via E-Mail durchgeführt wurde, reflektiert Philipp Weiss über die Möglichkeiten der Literatur in einer Zeit immer schneller voranschreitender ökologischer Destabilisierung. Weiss' erster Roman Am Weltrand sitzen die Menschen und lachen (2018) handelt von den Beziehungen zwischen Menschen, Natur und Technologie im Anthropozän — auch wenn Weiss selbst sich kritisch von dem Begriff distanziert. Im Interview geht der Autor auf die literarischen Herausforderungen ein, die mit dem Versuch einhergehen, die Verstrickung zwischen Subjektivität und fossilem Kapitalismus, virtueller Realität und ökologischem Krisenbewußtsein in Worte zu fassen. Er betont auch, wie wichtig Begegnungen mit anderen Menschen und Kulturen für seine kreative Arbeit sind.","PeriodicalId":41034,"journal":{"name":"Austrian Studies","volume":"30 1","pages":"185 - 195"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49452676","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition to thematic aspects of the film such as the conjunction of the Anthropocene and extractivist activity with matters of gender and race, the argument presented here places special emphasis on the question of how the radical epistemological, conceptual and aesthetic challenges of a proliferating Anthropocene discourse can be met through new forms of representation that go beyond merely reiterating, in purely mimetic fashion, that the Anthropocene simply is.Abstract:Fußend auf einer kritischen Analyse von Nikolaus Geyrhalters Film Erde (2019) und in Anlehnung sowohl an theoretische Überlegungen zum Realismus als auch an Mark Fishers Konzept eines capitalist realism untersucht dieser Aufsatz die Komplexitäten und diskrepanten politischen Valenzen eines 'Anthropocene Realism'. Im Mittelpunkt des Interesses steht hierbei neben inhaltlichen Aspekten wie der Verquickung von Anthropozän und Extraktivismus mit Fragen von gender und race insbesondere auch die Problematik, wie den fundamentalen epistemologischen, konzeptuellen und ästhetischen Herausforderungen des florierenden Anthropozän-Diskurses mit neuen Formen der Darstellung begegnet werden kann, die über eine rein mimetische Wiedergabe des Anthropozäns als Ist-Zustand hinausgehen.","PeriodicalId":41034,"journal":{"name":"Austrian Studies","volume":"30 1","pages":"47 - 62"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43292871","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This narrative, however, is and must be contested. Authors like Robert Seethaler and Raphaela Edelbauer have recently added their voices to a canon of those who question this romanticized element of Austria's self-stylization and look behind the appealing facade. Reading Seethaler's Ein ganzes Leben and Edelbauer's Das flüssige Land through the lens of Jason Moore's concept of the Capitalocene, this article seeks to address the authors' engagement with the exploitation that underpins the Austrian idyll and its lasting effects, highlighting just how contested nature is in the Austrian context.Abstract:Eine angeblich unberührte Landschaft ist ein Markenkern der 'nationalen Marke Österreich', der hinterfragt wird und werden muss. In jüngster Zeit haben sich Autor:innen wie Robert Seethaler und Raphaela Edelbauer jenen kritischen Stimmen angeschlossen, die dieses romantisierte Element der österreichischen Selbststilisierung in Frage stellen. Deshalb werden Seethalers Ein ganzes Leben und Edelbauers Das flüssige Land hier im Licht von John Moores Konzept des 'Capitalocene' (Kapitalozän) gelesen. Es wird gezeigt wie die Ausbeutung, die der österreichischen Idylle zugrunde liegt, sowie deren nachhaltige Auswirkungen von diesen Autor:innen literarisch verhandelt werden und welche besonders umstrittene Rolle die Natur im österreichischen Kontext spielt.","PeriodicalId":41034,"journal":{"name":"Austrian Studies","volume":"30 1","pages":"151 - 168"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45132252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Winkler's writing suggests that the accentuation of sounds plays an essential role when projecting implications of ecological scale. The analysis follows the narrator's soundwalks — a means of sustained aural attention — through which an overwhelming and alienating experience of the Anthropocene is framed. Drawing on Timothy Morton's notion of a mesh-like ecological interconnectedness of all living and non-living substances, it considers the intricate relationship between visual and acoustic disruptions and systemic ecological toxicity in Winkler's text.Abstract:Dieser Aufsatz nähert sich Josef Winklers Der Stadtschreiber von Kalkutta (2019) aus einer ökologischen Perspektive und offenbart ein bisher vernachlässigtes ökokritisches Potenzial des Textes. Winklers Schreiben legt nahe, dass die Akzentuierung von Geräuschen eine wesentliche Rolle spielt, wenn es um die Darstellung des Ausmaßes von ökologischen Auswirkungen des Anthropozäns auf das Erdsystem geht. Der Aufsatz folgt den akustischen Spaziergängen (soundwalks) des Erzählers — eine Form kontinuierlicher akustischer Aufmerksamkeit — durch die eine überwältigende und befremdende Erfahrung des Anthropozäns ausgedrückt wird. Ausgehend von Timothy Mortons ökologischer Vernetzung aller lebenden und nicht-lebenden Substanzen werden die komplexen Zusammenhänge zwischen visuellen und akustischen Störungen und systemischer ökologischer Toxizität in Winklers Text analysiert.","PeriodicalId":41034,"journal":{"name":"Austrian Studies","volume":"30 1","pages":"133 - 149"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42368725","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"社会学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The abstract, elemental language used to describe the higher regions of the mountain, on which two children get lost on Christmas Eve, turns an apparently stable 'nature' into a stage for disorienting and alienating aesthetic spectacle. On the mountain, the children's movements become subject to an austere Alpine calculus, articulated in variants of the word fortgehen, which recur obsessively throughout the text, pointing at an unsettling force beyond the human.
