It has been confirmed by a number of studies that attrition weakens the grammatical coherence in the mind of the speaker and that monolingual controls usually outperform attriters in grammatical judgment tasks. However, to what extent extralinguistic variables can justify this difference remains a question. The present study focuses on the first language attrition of Russians living in Hungary, focusing on grammatical judgment. All participants (N = 50) have spent more than seven years in Hungary, and their age ranges from 22 to 72 years old. The study’s main aim was to investigate the degree of extralinguistic variables, such as age, language choice, contact and attitude, frequency of use, length of residence, interacting with L1 of individuals on their grammatical judgment. The future tense formation task was developed to elicit data on morphological attrition. Together, these results provide vital understanding of how attriters’ language production differs from monolinguals’ and the main factors contributing to language attrition. The present study’s findings correspond to the previous studies that the immigrant group did significantly worse in comparison with the control group. However, the current study failed to find the link between extralinguistic variables and morphological attrition in L1.","PeriodicalId":40950,"journal":{"name":"Suvremena Lingvistika","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48706516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such surnames are derived from nobility titles in the Netherlands and Flanders and are the most common Dutch surnames. The case study is preceded by a brief overview of the historical, sociocultural and orthographic context within the Dutch language area to explain why Dutch surnames motivated by the same appellative are spelled differently in the Netherlands and Flanders. The first part of the article gives a review of the position of onomastics in Dutch Studies, the historical overview of Dutch surnames from the Netherlands and Flanders, with special emphasis on the changes before and after the introduction of the official spelling system of the Dutch language in 1804, and also on motivational classification of Dutch surnames. For the purposes of this case study, we first performed a quantitative analysis. We compiled a list to see how many holders of surnames motivated by the appellative graaf there are. We then divided the list into categories according to variations in the surnames. For the number of surnames in Flanders, we used the statistics from Statbel, the Belgian statistical office, and for the surnames in the Netherlands, the statistics from the database of the onomastic network Netwerk Naamkunde. The next step in the study was to search for the various forms of surnames containing the appellative graaf. The results of the search are shown in the pertaining table. A review of the lists reveals three variants in the forms of surnames (in terms of spelling, morphosyntax and phonology). These are analysed further in the text. Two online databases were used to determine the prevalence of the variants: FamilienamenBank for the Netherlands and Familienaam for Belgium. We then outlined the distribution of the most common variants of the surname graaf on the maps of the Netherlands and Belgium. In the Netherlands, the surname De Graaf has the highest concentration in the historic county of Holland, and in Belgium (Flanders), in the area bordering the Netherlands. Also, the distribution of the surnames Degraeve, De Graeve and Degrave (in Belgium) is shown. The results indicate somewhat limited mobility and decentralization. In the final part of the analysis, we looked at the origin of the surname graaf with respect to the motivational classification of Dutch surnames (see Brower 2000c), which divided the surnames into four categories: those derived from personal names, one’s origins, those motivated by occupation and those derived from nicknames. Almost all of the four categories occur in various spelling variants of surnames with the appellative graaf. The contribution of this paper is that surnames motivated by the appellative graaf are analyzed for the first time. Additionally, this is the first anthroponomastic article in Croatian on surnames from the Dutch language area. It will also enable Croatian anthroponomastics to get acquainted with the","PeriodicalId":40950,"journal":{"name":"Suvremena Lingvistika","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45212548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Their development was different, due to the peculiarities of each language system. One of them, participium praesentis activi (Pol. imiesłów czasu teraźniejszego czynny, Cro. glagolski prilog sadašnji aktivni / aktivni particip prezenta) developed in Polish into two separate (morphologically, syntactically and semantically different) verb forms: invariable imiesłów przysłówkowy współczesny with the suffix –ąc and the variable imiesłów przymiotnikowy czynny with the suffixes –ący for the masculine gender, –ąca for the feminine gender and –ące for the middle gender. While the first of them has its unambiguous equivalent in the Croatian language, glagolski prilog sadašnji with the suffix –ći, the second forces the translator to find some other solutions. Among them are various transformations at the formal level aimed at conveying the content of the original text. Even when not using any specific techniques of corpus linguistics, drawing on some sort of corpus is increasingly resorted to for empirically–grounded social–scientific analysis (sometimes dubbed ‘corpus–assisted discourse analysis’ or ‘corpus–based critical discourse analysis’, cf. Hardt–Mautner 1995; Baker 2016). In the post–Yugoslav space, recent corpus developments have brought table–turning advantages in many areas of discourse research, along with an ongoing proliferation of corpora and tools. Still, for linguists and discourse analysts who embark on collecting specialized corpora for their own research purposes, many questions persist – partly due to the fast–changing background of these issues, but also due to the fact that there is still a gap in the corpus method, and in guidelines for corpus compilation, when applied beyond the anglophone contexts. In this paper we aim to discuss some possible solutions to these difficulties, by presenting one step–by–step account of a corpus building procedure specifically for Croatian, Serbian and Slovenian, through an example of compiling a thematic corpus from digital media sources (news articles and reader comments). Following an overview of corpus types, uses and advantages in social sciences and digital humanities, we present the corpus compilation possibilities in the South Slavic language contexts, including data scraping options, permissions and ethical issues, the factors that facilitate or complicate automated collection, and corpus annotation and processing possibilities. The study shows expanding possibilities for work with the given languages, but also some persistently grey areas where researchers need to make decisions based on research expectations. Overall, the paper aims to recapitulate our own corpus compilation experience in the wider context of South–Slavic corpus linguistics and corpus linguistic approaches in the humanities more generally","PeriodicalId":40950,"journal":{"name":"Suvremena Lingvistika","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41364782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Phrasem als der Gegenstand der Phraseologie ist eine feste Wortverbindung (vgl. Burger 2010: 11). Die wichtigsten Eigenschaften der Phraseme sind Polylexikalität, Festigkeit und Idiomatizität, d. h. sie bestehen aus mehr als einem Wort, sind als genau diese Kombination von Wörtern in der Sprache und können voll–, teil– und nicht–idiomatisch sein (vgl. Burger 2010: 11, 29f., Burger 2007a: 90). Diese Festigkeit und Stabilität der Struktur eines Phrasems sind relativ und ermöglichen die Modifikationen der Phraseme, was sehr oft in dem Mediendiskurs ist. Die Funktionen der Phraseme beziehen sich auf kommunikative Ziele und Bedürfnisse der Schreiber, die versuchen, mit sprachlichen Äußerungen bestimmte Handlungen zu vollziehen (vgl. Filatkina 2007: 145). Das Ziel dieses Beitrags ist es Phraseme und ihre Merkmale in deutschen und kroatischen politischen Zeitungsartikeln zu bestimmen und die Unterschiede zwischen den Sprachen zu beschreiben. Es wird beschrieben, welche Phraseme in deutschen und kroatischen politischen Zeitungsartikeln vorkommen, welche Merkmale sie haben, in welchem Teil des Zeitungsartikels sie sich befinden, welche Funktion sie haben und von wem sie verwendet wurden. Als Korpora werden Zeitungsartikel aus den Zeitungen 24 sata und Bild mit dem Thema US–Wahlen in dem Zeitrahmen von 15. Oktober bis 15. November 2020 ausgesucht. Es wurden 43 deutsche und 61 kroatische Phraseme gefunden, davon gibt es 30 Modifikationen, die häufiger im Kroatischen sind. In beiden Sprachen sind Phraseme am häufigsten von Journalisten mit folgenden Funktionen verwendet: intensivierende Funktion, Bewertung und Argumentation. Sie erscheinen meistens in der Mitte des Zeitungsartikels, wobei in dem Kroatischen auch der Fall ist, dass ein Phrasem in dem Titel vorkommt. Die Sprache der Politiker ist ein häufiger Schwerpunkt der linguistischen Forschung, wobei unterschiedliche Aspekte des politischen Diskurses untersucht wurden, z. B. manipulative sprachliche Mittel, Metaphern oder Phraseme. Phraseme umfassen nach Elspaß (2002: 106) sogar 10 Prozent der Sprache und 15 Prozent in Texten wie politische Kommentare. Da die Sprache der Politiker über Medien vermittelt wurde, werden hier zwei Arten von Diskurs, politischer Diskurs und Mediendiskurs, näher beschrieben.","PeriodicalId":40950,"journal":{"name":"Suvremena Lingvistika","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46741549","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, a simple method for a distributional semantic analysis is presented. The basis of the investigation is the assumption common in corpus–based semantics and lexicography that the meaning of words can be interpreted from the context and thus polysemy and synonymy can be recognized. The article examines four web corpora for Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian and German. First, the context is analysed, assuming that the syntactic structures in the context are themselves inherently meaningful. Specifically, adjective attributes are used to analyse properties of the keyword, coordination partners as indicators for relevant categories, verbs with the keyword as subject and accusative object as indicators for typical actions the keyword performs or is target of. In a second step, the lexemes that occur in these four contexts are clustered and the semantic dimensions of the keyword are determined. The results suggest that the distributional method can in principle map dictionary definitions well. However, this is mainly true for contexts which involve attributes and coordination but not for action–related syntactic configurations. Overall, the most salient semantic dimensions of the lexeme are those pertaining to members of a religious community, members of a regional ethnic group, and experienced or induced aggression. Here, the four corpora differ considerably: while German usage almost exclusively focuses on religion–related aspects, the other corpora also contain ethnic/regional components, as well as the discourse of aggression. This aggression is mainly verbal in German, but physical in the other corpora. Neutral meaning components for the word musliman are salient only in the Bosnian corpus.","PeriodicalId":40950,"journal":{"name":"Suvremena Lingvistika","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-12-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44117237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Th e phonological contrastive analysis has shown a relatively strong similarity between the two languages in the case of consonant phonemes (18 phonemes in common out of 22 Slovene and 23 Italian consonant phonemes); the number of allophones present in both languages is much lower (4 allophones in common out of the total of 19 Slovene and 12 Italian consonant allophones). Th e contrastive analysis of consonant devoicing and voicing in Slovene and Italian (the study examines also the situation in Regional Italian) has shown that, in the languages analysed, the two phenomena are triggered mostly in diff erent phonetic contexts and that they involve diff erent consonant groups. Th e auditory analysis of the Italian pronunciation by Slovene (university) students has revealed some problematic points: the substitution of some Slovene phonemes absent in Slovene by similar Slovene phonemes (in particular, / ɲ ʎ / → /lj, nj/, /r/ → / ɾ /, /v/ → / ʋ /, /kw, ɡ w/ → /k ʋ , ɡʋ /), a diff erent distribution of some phonemes with respect to the Standard Italian (particularly, /s z/ and / ʦ ʣ /), and the presence of consonant devoicing and voicing typical of Slovene. Beside the infl uence of Slovene, it can be assumed that at least some problematic points could be caused by the northern Regional Italian (in particular, the Regional Italian in Venezia Giulia) and the incoherent Italian orthography (see the “phonetic values” of the graphemes ‹s›, ‹z›, ‹i›). Some problematic points of the Italian pronunciation by Slovene (university) students tend to gradually disappear during a continuous exposure to Standard Italian, while others (mainly those linked to the infl uence of Slovene) may be more persistent.","PeriodicalId":40950,"journal":{"name":"Suvremena Lingvistika","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.3,"publicationDate":"2022-07-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42845557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
