I argue that Mendelssohn draws out narratives from Goethe’s ‘Buch Suleika’. She composes a cycle of six songs with two revolutions, each charting the path of love from separation through union to separation again. Investigation of Mendelssohn’s cycle brings her teacher, Carl Friedrich Zelter, into view. The article concludes with a Stammbuch presented by Felix Mendelssohn to his wife, Cécile, in 1844, which featured illustrated musical settings of the Divan by Wilhelm Hensel and Fanny (now) Hensel.","PeriodicalId":40789,"journal":{"name":"Publications of the English Goethe Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44037088","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During this period, he composed Metamorphosen, usually considered an elegy for Germanic culture with its quotation from Beethoven’s Eroica inscribed ‘In Memoriam’. Goethe’s influence on the work is far greater than hitherto realized. I argue that Strauss’s late choice of title invites a search for the conceptual content of the score. Close analysis of two poems by Goethe copied out in Strauss’s sketchbook, including a musical setting published here in full for the first time, reveals a ‘poetische Idee’ which unifies the multiple layers of meaning within the work. Relating Metamorphosen to its historical context, I interpret the work as a self-portrait of Strauss’s experience reading Goethe.","PeriodicalId":40789,"journal":{"name":"Publications of the English Goethe Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2023-01-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48015857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This essay seeks to reconstruct a European moment in the work of Laube, beginning with his 1832 book on the Polish November Uprising, and ending with the publication of extracts from the novel trilogy Das junge Europa in August Lewald’s literary journal Europa in 1837. Claudius portrays that cultural change vividly and as the miniaturization of luxury. In Die Wahlverwandtschaften, meanwhile, the newly domesticated art of firework displays illuminates the link between the fashionable ‘little luxury’ and modern ephemerality. Thus, the following argues that literary representations of luxury around 1800, and of fireworks in particular, are examples of an ephemeral and increasing consumer culture at the time, and reflect contemporary accelerated temporalization. Moreover, the discussion of Goethe allows us to draw a line from Die Wahlverwandtschaften to his concept of the Veloziferisches, as well as making reference to other major works (‘An Schwager Kronos’; Faust).","PeriodicalId":40789,"journal":{"name":"Publications of the English Goethe Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44582193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Winckelmann is often seen as the man who gave the impetus to a wave of philhellenism in Germany. According to Butler, German intellectuals’ nostalgic longing for Greece and lack of interest in real societal problems bears much responsibility for the cultural collapse of interwar Germany and the rise of Nazism. The ideas that Butler put forward have been of great importance for those who criticize the political use of classical art in public monuments. Discussing Butler’s points of view, this article will take a critical look at her reasons for attributing such a central role in the cultural decline of interwar Germany to Winckelmann’s philhellenism.","PeriodicalId":40789,"journal":{"name":"Publications of the English Goethe Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-09-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49600872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In practice, however, the canonical status favours an uncritical approach to literature and leads to the omission of numerous sources that could serve to gain significant insights into the literary life of the time; and the postulate of topicality invites students to neglect the historical quality of the Enlightenment as well as the difference between fact and fiction. Using the example of drama, the article identifies these problems and outlines teaching options that arise from a critical engagement with canon and topicality. It also suggests that teaching the literature of the German Enlightenment is not necessarily easier in German-speaking countries than it is in other parts of the world.","PeriodicalId":40789,"journal":{"name":"Publications of the English Goethe Society","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44295052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
