However, there is no singular definition of social justice, nor is there consistency in how social justice is taught across social work curricula. Typically, social work programs either infuse social justice across the social work curriculum or require an in-depth, social justice content-driven course. These dual inconsistencies create challenges in understanding how students learn social justice. This study seeks to understand if undergraduate students have better outcomes related to knowledge and skill in a course structured with an in-depth social justice-–specific curriculum versus a course that has social justice infused across the content. Simply knowing how social justice curriculum is taught is not sufficient; rather, we must understand how social justice engagement is learned.","PeriodicalId":407620,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work","volume":"602 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116451947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although social work students are preparing to work in trauma-informed environments, the principles of trauma-informed care have not been applied to the classroom environment. These principles, combined with contemplative practices, are particularly relevant in undergraduate social work education where students grapple with complex issues related to trauma. Contemplative practices have been noted to improve self-awareness, mediate practice, and content-related stress in social work, and have positive implications for metacognitive and critical thinking skills. This article weaves together principles of trauma-informed care and contemplative practices and describes a course revision to an undergraduate social work course on crisis intervention and interpersonal violence.","PeriodicalId":407620,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129418476","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This educational case study provides the reader with real-world strategies for making observation of practice a reality in everyday bachelor of social work (BSW) field educational placements. The case study provides a blueprint for infusing an observational culture of learning, beginning in the freshman year and ending in earnest in the senior year of the BSW program. Specific implementation strategies are provided, allowing the reader to replicate this model in any BSW program, large or small.","PeriodicalId":407620,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122595140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research finds that relocations for older adults can be extremely difficult. To inform how agencies can support a satisfactory transition for older adults, this study draws on survey data to explore factors affecting older adults' perceived satisfaction with relocating to or within a continuing care retirement community in Southern California. Results demonstrated that overall satisfaction with the transition process increased when older adults identified themselves as primary decision makers of the relocation and when they experienced a higher level of welcomeness at the facility. Results also displayed that residents identified staff visits as the most important support they received during their transition. Results address the Social Work Grand Challenge of Advancing Long and Productive Lives by informing agencies, educators, and practitioners about strategies to increase the well-being of transitioning older adults.","PeriodicalId":407620,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114365406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Social workers in generalist practice are likely to serve individuals with a history of childhood adversity. Currently, there is no standard requirement for the topic of ACEs to be addressed in baccalaureate social work education. Our teaching note addresses this gap in the curriculum by establishing a need for baccalaureate social work students to receive trauma-specific education early in their academic careers. Human Behavior in the Social Environment is proposed as a course in which this content can be easily incorporated. Using OSCE methodology, the reliability and validity of the OSCE for Social Work: Practice Performance Rating Scale is examined for use in assessing BSW foundation-level direct practice competency using five separate cohorts of BSW students under varying conditions. Findings support good internal consistency. Interrater reliability and concurrent validity are partially supported. The use of OSCE with BSW students is promising when well designed and implemented. OSCE offers a measure in a simulated setting that is direct and multidimensional for evaluation of student competency and assessment of program outcomes. Recommendations for implementation based on lessons learned through multiple testing iterations are provided.","PeriodicalId":407620,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Baccalaureate Social Work","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130857161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More than 93% (n=742) of the study participants reported having used alcohol, and 62% (n=445) reported using drugs on one or more occasions. Reported types of use, frequency of use, and severity of use as measured by AUDIT and DAST scores showed BSW students' substance use similar to or above other national samples of college students.
