There are seven, and now it can be said eight, generations of family representatives motivated by the same vocation of service, whose results have extended almost worldwide. They have stood out for their intellectual abilities, their commitment to staying updated, and their broad and generous approach to serving human beings who suffer from pain, illness, and physical and/or spiritual suffering. While it is true that modern medicine is not the same as it was in the 19th century, the essence of being a doctor will always be related to an individual vocation and a profound ethics that must be fulfilled completely, despite the passing of time and the emergence of new generations or changes. There are three keywords that all doctors descended from Dr. Quevedo inherit, in order to perform successfully, with competence and dedication to our patients, who are and will always be our reason for being: kindness, wisdom, and respect. Bone mass formation has been studied at various stages of development, from pregnancy, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, where the greatest increase occurs to achieve peak bone mass. The increase in bone mass begins during the gestation process as a period of high fetal calcium demand and continues from birth through childhood and infancy, experiencing its maximum growth during adolescence until reaching the peak of bone mass in adulthood, around 20-30 years of age. Approximately 70% of bone mass is inherited from parents, while the remaining percentage is acquired through the processes of gestation, development, and growth, where environmental factors, nutrition, exercise, avoidance of toxic substances, and maintaining overall health contribute to achieving the highest concentration of bone mass. Bravo-Acosta","doi":"10.56684/ammd/2023.2.22","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.56684/ammd/2023.2.22","url":null,"abstract":"25 years ago, we started in Antioquia the campaign “No more blind from diabetes”. This campaign was possible due to the collaboration of the Hospital San Vicente Fundación, Antioquia University, the Ophthalmology programs of Pontificia Bolivariana University and CES University. This campaign is held annually around November 14. In 2022 we commemorated version No. 25. Results: We have evaluated approximately 15,000 patients to the present time, an average of 600 per year. Among all these patients 50% attend for the first time each year, 70% are females and 80% are type 2 diabetics. We found a prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) of 15.5% and 64% of these patients are females. These patients have been diagnosed with diabetes for about 12 years and they have shown poor metabolic control of their diabetes with an average glycosylated Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) of 11.2% (normal range below 5.7%). The stage of the retinopathy showed that 70% of the patients had the non-proliferative form. We found that 1 out of 3 patients presented with severe visual loss due to severe non-proliferative retinopathy and macular edema. The main etiology of chronic vision loss in diabetic patients is diabetic macular edema found in 22% of the patients and the majority were females with type 2 diabetes over 60 years of age with an average HbA1C of 10%. Conclusions: This is the largest screening and ongoing test for DR done in Colombia, South America. This study focuses on the most vulnerable population and the results provide relevant information about the epidemiology of this disease. Emphasis is placed on the creation of the Valencia Group, composed of philosophers from the University of Valencia (Spain) and the University of Castellón, which is a city that is not part of the Autonomous Community of Valencia. They have dedicated themselves to the study of ethics in all its aspects through conferences, publications, interviews, and articles for philosophy magazines in Spain. Adela Cortina’s contributions are very important regarding the anthropological principles of ethics and their practical application. Cortina begins with the recognition of the other or alterity, in order to understand the foundations of ethics that promote the dignity of all human beings, as Hegel had proposed. In 2007, she published the book “The Cordial Reason,” where she argues that “reason” must be complemented with elements of the “heart,” such as emotions and feelings, to better understand the anthropological basis of ethics. In 2017, she published “The Ethics of Compassionate Reason,” in the classical sense of the term, meaning “to suffer with the other” and, if possible, to help them. She mentions that she sought the opinion of Jürgen Habermas, who agreed with her. Her latest contribution to the problem of global poverty is an article on “post-poverty,” in which she recalls that in September 2015, the UN, with 193 signatory countries, committed to ending poverty and hunger by the year 2030.
