Inductive modeling methodologies are beneficial for modeling the systems where the uncertainties involved in the system do not permit to obtain an accurate physical model. However inductive models, like Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), may suffer from a few drawbacks involving over-fitting and the difficulty to easily understand the model itself. This can result in user reluctance to accept the model or even complete rejection of the modeling results. Thus, it becomes highly desirable to make such inductive models more comprehensible and to automatically determine the model complexity to avoid over-fitting. In this paper, we propose a novel type of ANN, a Mixed Transfer Function Artificial Neural Network (MTFANN), which aims to improve the complexity fitting and comprehensibility of the most popular type of ANN (MLP - a Multilayer Perceptron).","PeriodicalId":405687,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-02-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128221742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed methodology does not require the integration of the standard voltage model neither the exact knowledge of the system parameters. Assuming the flux estimator as a linguistic source, producing a certain language, a grammatical inference algorithm is used to extract the productions that govern the grammar representing that language. The formalism of the developed formal language based control algorithm is presented. The inherent non-linear characteristics of the grammar productions make it possible to obtain accurate flux estimation. Application results are presented in order to show the effectiveness of the proposed methodology.","PeriodicalId":405687,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-02-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128991834","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As compared to the conventional applications of the battery banks with a single converter, the configuration has lower component stresses leading to a higher operating efficiency. The batteries can be substantially controlled independently, so that the advantages with parallel operation more efficient utilization of battery power and extensive battery management as well as charge equalization can be realized. Circuit operations and theoretical analyses are discussed on the boost-typed BPMs with series output configuration. Practical measurements are made to demonstrate the effectiveness of charge equalization.","PeriodicalId":405687,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-02-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133845168","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to realize these kinds of actuators, we designed a soft metal hydride (MH) actuator using a copper-coated LaNi5 alloy and a laminate film bellows. For the purpose of this study, we selected a suitable LaNi5 alloy and developed a soft and light end-effector for the soft MH actuator. As a result of experimental tests, the LaNi5 alloy that has a low plateau pressure at room temperature performs well for the MH actuator. Moreover, the end-effector applied to the soft bellows made of an aluminum laminate film is 20 times lighter and 30 times longer than the metal bellows used in a conventional MH actuator. These findings support the efficacy of the soft MH actuator using the LaNi5 alloy with low plateau pressure and laminate film bellows for the purpose of developing a portable rehabilitation system or a wearable force feedback device in virtual reality.","PeriodicalId":405687,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-02-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121266012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Optimizing the design of rotor structure is the fundamental way to increase the transformation efficiency. By analyzing the salient pole rotor's characteristics, a new analogous salient pole reluctance rotor was designed. That is to add n(p+q) deep troughs on the basis of common salient pole reluctance rotor structure. Accordingly, the rotor was divided into p+q magnetic poles. It is known from comparative analysis of the motor magnetic field by the finite element method that the new rotor structure works better than the common salient pole rotor in terms of the magnetic poles modulation effect, which increased the magnetic transformation efficiency greatly. The BDFM with new rotor has the advantages of simple structure, easy to manufacture, asynchronous operation in single-fed state, high reliability and high magnetic transformation efficiency.","PeriodicalId":405687,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-02-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129010099","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system is designed to store 5kWh at maximum speed of 18,000 rpm and the gyroscopic coupling is strong that the dynamics of system changes with respect to the running speed. To analyze the stability of the system accurately, we derived mathematical models for the system components including the rotor, active magnetic bearings, amplifiers and sensors. The rotor model is based either on rigid-body dynamics or flexible rotor model using finite-element approach. We checked the stability of the system using the derived models and found that the model based rigid-body dynamics can be misleading, and an accurate rotor model using flexible rotor dynamics must be used in order to predict the stability properly.","PeriodicalId":405687,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology","volume":"30 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-02-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117049296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper examines how hardware access is controlled under Microsoft Windows, Linux and FreeBSD and concludes that user space access to hardware IO ports is inadequate, either non-existent or implemented in such a way as to be insecure. A simple, novel method is then proposed that allows user level programs to access hardware in a tightly controlled manner under Linux and FreeBSD. This has particular application to computer based control systems and the development of device drivers from within user space. It also facilitates secure and tightly controlled access to hardware IO in the educational environment.","PeriodicalId":405687,"journal":{"name":"2009 IEEE International Conference on Industrial Technology","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-02-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114401887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
