Key purpose of the current work is to find wind power potential at low, medium and higher heights. To explore the best and power potential, four years wind speed data is forecasted using statistical model. ARIMA models present a better understanding to the change and estimate of the wind speed. Based on this forecasted wind speed 317 turbines of different manufacturers were examined at different heights (60m, 80m and 100m) from ground level including maximum possible rating up to 5 MW. The results show the best turbine selection at particular location with maximum possible capacity factor achievable through various numerical as well as simulation methods. Moreover this study further investigates the economic feasibility of 50 MW wind farm through numerical methods at the potential site using Minitab, Stats Graphics, and EViews. The results obtained from these software were validated by simulations through RETScreen Software. The results show that the most suitable hub height for wind turbines in Pasni-Pakistan is 100m and capacity factor found at this height is 20.19 % with annual wind energy production of 88 GWh/year.","PeriodicalId":404870,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Energy Systems and Policies (ICESP)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131479779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The empirical outcomes show that feedback relationship holds between energy consumption and GDP and between energy consumption and exports (trade) in the short run. There also exists unidirectional causal relation running from energy to imports (trade) in the short run while feedback relationship between these in the long run. Moreover, there is evidence of unidirectional causal relation running from export (trade) to energy in the long run. The main implications are that any shortage of energy supply will lessen the imports and exports of the countries directly and impede GDP growth indirectly.","PeriodicalId":404870,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Energy Systems and Policies (ICESP)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133067344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using wind, solar power, wave power, tidal power and clean green energy has now become more popular. Harnessing wind energy, the country can produce up to 346,000 MW in the coastal areas; solar is an efficient option but has a major downfall in that it is quite costly to implement currently on a large scale. Incredible amount of energy can be produced from waves but again, strong, expensive equipment has to be installed. In this paper, we propose producing green energy from microcellular organisms known as algae as a highly effective alternate energy generating mechanism, with significantly fewer disadvantages compared to traditional renewable resources. We designed a system that produces energy from algae bio-fuel on a small scale using artificial illumination to enhance growth yield of the algae making the process significantly cost effective. On a large scale bio-reactors and a paddle wheel are currently in use, requiring additional area. Comparison with various oil producing crops such as palm, coconut, jatropha oil etc shows that only algae can produce from 5000-20,000 gallons of oil per acre in a year. Experimental results show that for three 250ml water bottles producing 56 moles of algae, and average power output of 50kW can obtained translating into a average yield of 89%.","PeriodicalId":404870,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Energy Systems and Policies (ICESP)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132483562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

All the nations are looking for the solution to this problem in their own capacity. One possible way of doing this is by the conservation of the fuel consumption in internal combustion engine. Moreover, it should reduce carbon emission and help in global warming. A possible improvement in the internal combustion engine is efficiency improvement that's help in less fuel consumption which automatically reduces the emissions that are exhausted from engine. Interestingly, this should also add positive to the tight regulations of emissions by International agency for environment safety. In this paper we present techniques to increase the efficiency of the internal combustion engines, as efficiency is paramount feature of the engine. We will present a detailed mathematical model of engine and conducted a parametric study to evaluate the effect of different parameters on the efficiency. The key parameters that affect the efficiency are chamber geometry (bore, stroke, and connecting rod radius), compression ratio, heat loss through walls, turbo-charging & weight optimization. The developed technique will help the user in the efficiency optimization analysis decisions. In addition, it also reduces the time of engine testing and cost associated with it.","PeriodicalId":404870,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Energy Systems and Policies (ICESP)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131419790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First and foremost requirement of HVAC is to get all the necessary details for HVAC load calculations from the building Architect and plan an energy efficiency strategy for HVAC design. HVAC Engineer must be able to convince building Architect with his calculations to alter a few building specifications, which results in considerably low HVAC loads as compared to the original design without changing/ damaging building aesthetics. The coordination with the building Architect at this phase is very important because it would not only lead to efficient design but also result in low running cost. In this research paper, a sample commercial building would be taken as a case study and different design strategies would be implemented at the load calculation phase and the summary of results would be shared along with the required inputs/ strategies which may include the following techniques but not limited to lowering building envelope thermal loads, changing building operating profiles in terms of lighting, equipment and people, effective zoning, fresh air requirements, input variation in terms of climate data, fenestrations etc. All these factors with suitable techniques and coordination would lead to reduction in resource depletion. Thus, resulting in energy efficiency without affecting occupants comfort and the building requirements.","PeriodicalId":404870,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Energy Systems and Policies (ICESP)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126607733","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The gap between demand and supply is gradually increasing leading to heavy load shedding. This crisis has badly affected the life of people and economic growth of Pakistan which appears as a barrier in the long-term future. Along with other reasons, energy losses by the end user are one of most important aspect of energy crisis. To cope with this situation proper interventions are needed. Building sector is one of the major energy consumers and source of energy wastages if not properly managed. The energy losses in buildings are due to installation of inefficient equipments and improper utilization of electrical & mechanical systems. It is also observed that, energy efficiency parameters & standards are not being kept under considerations during the designing and construction of new buildings, which is resulting in high consumption of energy. Keeping in view the importance of building energy consumption and its impacts, Energy Audits of public sector building i.e. Pakistan Secretariat (Block A, B, C, D, P, R and S) were conducted. The sample was comprised of old and new buildings. After analysis of data gathered through energy audits, up to 30 % of Energy Saving Opportunities were identified. In this paper, some technical parameters regarding windows to wall ratio, lighting, AC, building envelop and water treatment having high impact on energy consumption and comfort level in the building, are identified which may be adopted as per local environmental conditions.","PeriodicalId":404870,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Energy Systems and Policies (ICESP)","volume":"288 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128637094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This situation is further worsening as the conventional fossil fuel resources are decreasing. Solar thermal is one of the alternatives that can be used to fulfil the power requirements of the world without effecting the environment. Solar is one of the widely available renewable energy resources around the globe. One of the key challenges in harvesting this resource is that it is intermittent, thus its availability is limited. Several techniques are used to overcome this challenge, the method being used now is hybrid technology of conventional and solar; where solar is being used in peak hours. Another technique is to store the excess energy present during day and utilize it during night by using phase change material. This paper presents a comparative study between two phase change materials; nitrate salts and wax for energy storage of a 500 Watt Fresnel Mirror Solar Concentrator. A comparison between their thermal storage capacities, their charge and discharge time is made using CFD tool like COMSOL.","PeriodicalId":404870,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Energy Systems and Policies (ICESP)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124472600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
