In a country like Pakistan which is struggling to meet its energy demands, solar power offers the perfect solution in terms of utility in remote areas where conventional power distribution is unavailable. Photovoltaic solar energy is fuel free, maintenance free and long life furnishing up to 25 years of clean energy. Solar energy can be used more effectively in hybrid configuration involving a combination of other energy resources like grid, wind or diesel. In order to execute a hybrid PVS capable of generating energy it is imperative to optimize the proposed system so that the most economic and efficient solution is furnished before implementation. HOMER is specialized software by National Renewable Energy Laboratory USA and is employed specifically for hybrid energy resource design optimizations. In this paper a 3kW solar power system is modeled via HOMER. Grid-solar and diesel-solar system simulations carried out in considerable details are studied to analyze parameters for optimization, consequently leading to economic evaluation of both the hybrid systems. It is deduced that a grid-tied system tends to be more efficient as compared to a standalone generator/diesel-solar system.","PeriodicalId":404870,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Energy Systems and Policies (ICESP)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123400290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Furthermore, the primary energy and electric energy rates of consumption in residential sector are increasing by 4.5% and 1.3% respectively, because of the increase of population and rise of the standard of living. As Pakistan is short of energy resources, it imports expensive oil that underlines the need for energy conservation. Buildings have the largest potential for energy saving especially for lighting by using more efficient Light emitting diodes (LEDs), Compact fluorescent light (CFLs) and by using daylight as 38% of the residential electricity is consumed for lighting only. This study investigates the potential of reducing energy consumption by using daylight through domes in roofs. Roof domes affect the energy required for lighting, heating and cooling. As EnergyPlus software has the capability to analyze daylight and energy flow in buildings, it is used for this study. Typical Meteorological Year (TMY) hourly data for Karachi is used as input to the EnergyPlus program for the calculation. Simulations show that the optimal dome area is 0.155% of the floor area to have the minimum total energy consumption in Karachi. By using the optimal dome area, reasonable illuminance distribution are obtained in the building even during the month of December. Calculation result also show that the optimal area of the dome saves Rs3651/- per year in electricity bills for the house hold. The use of roof dome of optimal size therefore saves electricity bills of the building owner as well as helps to overcome energy crisis in the country. Also a planned location of the dome in the roof will achieve a desired lux level at any location inside the building.","PeriodicalId":404870,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Energy Systems and Policies (ICESP)","volume":"229 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123191544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But their integration into electric power system is a challenging task due to their intermittent nature. Power system with renewables required simulation at small time scale to increase the confidence level and prepare a convincing plan. Work has been done to develop a modeling framework that could be used to simulate and assess the possibility of 100% renewable based electric power system in a region (i.e. State, Country, continent etc.). The user can divide the region into subregions, and each subregion may have as many supply projects as desired. The division helps to estimate the infrastructure requirement for electric power transmission among subregions and estimate system total cost. In the framework, supply options considered are wind, solar, hydro (run of river, reservoir type and pump storages) and biomass. The time resolution used is “hour” and the user needs to provide same level input data for demand and resources. The calculation are performed to find electric balance including; i) generation ii) consumption and iii) import/ export for each subregion in each hour of the year. In addition, the framework calculates parameters relevant to the resources and storages installation requirement and utilization. The results obtained can be used to estimate the total financial requirement for implementation.","PeriodicalId":404870,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Energy Systems and Policies (ICESP)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132909046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents an adaptive PID (APID) controller for improving oscillation damping capability of a Thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC). An adaptive supplementary control can set the control parameters of PID in an online mode responding to respective changes in system's operating conditions. Control parameters are updated in real time by utilizing gradient descent method. Performance of proposed controller is investigated on two machine four bus system under diverse fault conditions. Nonlinear time domain simulation is made in MATLAB/Simulink and validation of proposed controller is made by its comparison with conventional PI controller. Results show clear eminence of proposed controller in improving transient stability of given system.","PeriodicalId":404870,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Energy Systems and Policies (ICESP)","volume":"84 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125634681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The vehicle Ad hoc networks are a very appealing solution for many safety applications like assistance driver, warning about collision of vehicle, warning of distance between vehicles, cooperation during driving and control for cruise cooperation. To operate these application the vehicles are fitted with those equipments which permit them to exchange information with vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructural (V2I). We have to consider delay and reliability to avoid miscommunication or no commutation between vehicles. This paper aims to discuss the energy outlook and ways toward greener environment in electricity production in Pakistan. Gross domestic product and population are the major drivers behind the growing demand for energy. Demand for electricity in Pakistan is always growing with its GDP and population growth. The growth for electricity in Pakistan forecasted by Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Resources has shown an increase of 0.75% in 2012 compared to 2011. This growth has been driven by strong demand from industrial and government sectors. Overall, the share of electricity consumption to total energy consumption has decreased due to short fall of electricity from 13.6% in 2007 to 12.5% in 2012. The total electricity generation was reported at 95TWh in 2012 whereas electricity consumption was 76.7TWh showing 17.3% line losses. Oil is still the major fuel source in Pakistan contributing to 35.2% of the total generation fuel mix of electricity followed by hydro, 29.9%, gas, 29% nuclear and imported, 5.8% and Coal, 0.1%. The shortfall of electricity is expected to drop when the Quide-Azam solar park and 45 ongoing wind energy projects will inject a total of 4200 MW electricity into the national grid by 2016.","PeriodicalId":404870,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Energy Systems and Policies (ICESP)","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117271961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Solar energy is one such renewable energy. The Estimation of solar energy potential of a region requires detailed solar radiation climatology. Also it is necessary to collect extensive radiation data of high accuracy covering all climatic zones of the region. The study area National University of Sciences and Technology is the one of the top ranked universities of Pakistan and has some limitations on the number of synoptic stations. Hence, the aim of this study is to determine the theoretical solar radiation potential in NUST by using Area Solar Radiation (ASR) model based on topography and geographical information systems. The ASR model was successfully applied with a core of practical methodology. The results show that NUST has very good solar potential with value of 15.57 KWH/m2 and 12.88 KWH/m2 as maximum and minimum respectively. The Area Solar Radiation model can also be used to calculate the insolation across an entire landscape. The ASR model is very efficient and time saving which offers means of entering, accessing, and interpreting the information for the purpose of sound decision making.","PeriodicalId":404870,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Energy Systems and Policies (ICESP)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126257881","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Matlab simulations were done to analyze the effect of factors like the movement of sun, size of the solar reflective Dish and the radius of the curvature of the dish on the focus point changes and induced aberrations and to optimize the focus quality. Sun rays after reflecting from the dish meet each other at different points in the air rather than at a single point causing scattering and aberrations which is minimized by using dish of small size and large radius of the curvature. Simulations were also done to analyze and optimize the focus spread on the engine placed at the focal plane. As the focus spread increases with the movement of the sun, very few rays hit the sun. Using simulations we get an idea of how long does it take for the sun to move through an angle for which the focus spread is within the tolerable limit. We know beforehand to move the dish after some specific longer time rather than moving it time and again using some sensors to track the movement of the sun.","PeriodicalId":404870,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Energy Systems and Policies (ICESP)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131327057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
