The researchers identified three online cultural capital-related variables (understanding of social tagging, understanding of Delicious' social functionalities, and quantity of tags and bookmarks) via factor analysis of a survey dataset and analyzed their influences on tagging motivations (information organization-oriented vs. social-oriented) and tagging strategies (object-based tagging vs. situation-based tagging). An existing dataset from a previous survey of Delicious users was used for the analysis. Multiple regression analysis was used to examine the influences of the three variables on tagging motivations and strategies. The study found that understanding of social tagging has a significant positive influence on information organization-oriented tagging; understanding of Delicious' social functionalities has a significant positive influence on social-oriented tagging. In tagging strategies, understanding of Delicious' functionalities significantly influenced how strategic respondents are in situation-based tagging. Quantity of tags and bookmarks influenced both types of tagging strategies.","PeriodicalId":40348,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Library and Information Studies","volume":"10 1","pages":"21-37"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2012-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71316342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Performance Ranking of Scientific Papers for World Universities by Higher Education Evaluation and Accreditation Council of Taiwan (HEEACT Ranking) emphasizes both the quality and quantity of research and current research performance. The Academic Ranking of World Universities by Shanghai Jiao Tung University (ARWU) focuses on outstanding performance of universities with indicators such as Nobel Prize winners. The QS World University Ranking (2004-2009) by Times Higher Education (THE-QS) emphasizes on peer review with high weighting in evaluation. This paper compares the 2009 ranking results from the three ranking systems. Differences exist in the top 20 universities in three ranking systems except the Harvard University, which scored top one in all of the three rankings. Comparisons also revealed that the THE-QS favored UK universities. Further, obvious differences can be observed between THE-QS and the other two rankings when ranking results of some European countries (Germany, UK, Netherlands, & Switzerland) and Chinese speaking regions were compared.","PeriodicalId":40348,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Library and Information Studies","volume":"9 1","pages":"1-25"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2011-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71316215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of the universities had relatively low publication and citation numbers at the time of this study. The analysis focused on the range of equal values resulted from the three different indices, the range of disparity, the order or rank, and the degree of correlation among the indices. The results showed that g-index and h-index were similar in that the use of the two indices produced similar values and rankings. Both had the problem of equal value in which multiple universities got the same index value, making it difficult to differentiate the universities' performance. In contrast, A-index was able to rank the universities by emphasizing on the highly cited articles and at the same time avoided the problem of equal value. It was thus considered a better index for the institutional level research evaluation in Taiwan.","PeriodicalId":40348,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Library and Information Studies","volume":"8 1","pages":"1-10"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71316200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
