Their titles - Selected Writings on Race and Difference (edited by Paul Gilroy and Ruth Wilson Gilmore), Selected\u0000 Writings on Media (edited by Charlotte Brunsdon) and Selected Writings on Marxism (edited by Gregor McLennan) - may seem to suggest that it is easy to neatly separate these three aspects, when in fact, as readers will be aware, these aspects constantly intersect and inform each other in Hall's\u0000 work. This is not to say, however, that it doesn't make sense to attempt a thematic separation of the kind that these recent volumes undertake. Doing so offers the opportunity for new readers to be introduced to Hall's work in a systematic way, while those already familiar with it are invited\u0000 to think more deeply about the individual trajectories of his writings. The editors of each volume have found individual ways to engage with their respective selection of texts.

The lack of investment in infrastructure, together with centralised control over project investment, is a longstanding issue that is causing continuing frustration for sub-national politicians, even those supporting the same political party as the government. This article examines the nature of these relationships over the past and more recent period, considering both the devolved nations and the absence of devolution in England. It considers the role that infrastructure has in regional development and in centralised state control, and its consequences for economic growth. It highlights that the UK, unlike any other EU member state, has no national development or infrastructure plan. The cultural politics of 'levelling up', it argues, therefore remain set in a centralised state with no mechanisms for specific interventions to make social, economic and physical differences to localities that are left behind.

Capitalism and Ideology develops the thesis of the earlier volume into a micro-historical account of the development of property-based societies. It proposes a strong programme for their reform in the direction of a renewed social democracy. In offering an historical account of the development of capitalism it enables us to reopen debates about political futures, and to locate proposals for change within this trajectory: it historicises the present as a way of arguing that things could be otherwise. Possibly because of its explicitly socialist political argument, it has not so far received the attention and acclaim of its predecessor.

Sexism, racism, ableism and myriad other kinds of oppression show up with depressing regularity in the ways we organise ourselves in formal institutions and grassroots collectives, as well as our interpersonal relationships. Sometimes these internal problems become more widely known, albeit in messy and incoherent ways. More often, however, such issues remain hidden, with those experiencing harm unable or unwilling to speak out. It is therefore noteworthy when these common organisational issues are revealed and documented in a public forum. The three interviews presented here are with people involved in attempts to make public difficult issues that have arisen within different left-wing organisations - the left-wing news outlet The Canary, the #meTU campaign calling out bullying and sexual harassment in trade unions, and Campaign Bootcamp, a charity which ran trainings for organisers until it shut in 2022.

While police denialism of institutional racism continues to be a problem, the institutional failure that creates the recurring cycles of crisis goes beyond the Met. It is also rooted in a stunted mediascape, and, more seriously, a failing political culture that is addicted to the sugar rush of immediate political news, and mired in an authoritarian and zombie politics of law and order that seeks to manage dissent through producing first shock and then amnesia. This institutional permacrisis underlines the failures of all three institutions to recognise and address institutional racism. It is symptomatic of a failure to go beyond the facile assumption - in the face of decades of evidence to the contrary - that deeply embedded structural problems can be solved through the fix of culture-change programmes or the appointment of a heroic new leader. Recent reports have also found the Met to be marked by institutional misogyny and institutional corruption. This extension of the idea of systemic failure seems unlikely to prompt the kind of systemic and structural change that is needed.

Amber Heard defamation trial constitutes what Sarah Banet-Weiser (2018) calls a 'feminist flashpoint': it has become a media event that facilitates and shapes discourses around gender-based violence in the public sphere. The cultural significance of the social media commentaries on the trial is threefold. First, the sheer volume of media traffic turns sexual violence into a media spectacle. Second, commentary featured discussion of domestic violence and situated it within the legacies of #MeToo. Thirdly, the stark divide between Depp and Heard supporters reveals shifts in cultural understandings of sexual violence since #MeToo but also a backlash against the movement. Cultural understandings of gender-based violence and feminism, popularised by #MeToo, are acknowledged, but the same digital tools that enable online feminist activism are mobilised in the backlash. The authors explore the re-activation of the myth of the 'ideal victim'; Heard's resistance to dominant representations of the passive victim; and the 'memeification' of Heard (Valenti 2022) as a form of gendered surveillance and policing. The trial exemplifies a new iteration of postfeminism, one that acknowledges the cultural and political significance of #MeToo yet upholds the same rape myths that were previously criticised.

The end of education policy? 教育政策的终结?

Instead the provision of and access to school places has been relocated away from the desk of publicly elected representatives and appointed accredited professionals, to a range of private sites controlled by oligarchic club interests engaged in market exchanges: first, little monarchies, such as the Harris family; second, little representatives, such as the Confederation of School Trusts (CST); and third, little contractors, such as grammar schools. We use these three examples to examine the restoration of private provision, access and control as an example of depoliticisation. This trend is evident in a shift in decision-making about the purposes of education, away from public policy funded by the public, in the name of the public and accountable to the public, and towards providers and consumers, and towards nowhere in particular. Debates about and for educational issues are on no-one's agenda. We argue that these trends validate the analytical judgment that education is no longer a matter for public policy but instead has been relocated to corporate market exchanges within and beyond the nation state.
