His eyes, bulging and blood streaked seemed overbig in his bearded face ... ‘My hands are the wheel that is steering the Universe’, he declaimed. ‘One twist and I can destroy mankind, and all these people passing.’ The other man patted his shoulder. ‘That wouldn’t do you much good’, he said. ‘You’d destroy yourself as well.’ The pianist’s face set. ‘You’re wrong, friend’, he declared. ‘I am the indestructible. I am in control.’ The tram-driver clanged his bell. The pianist had to be led on to the pavement and left there, his hands still gripping the imaginary wheel that was keeping the Universe from disaster.","PeriodicalId":403400,"journal":{"name":"Soundings: a journal of politics and culture","volume":"262 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114266916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We are not dealing with problems ‘for’ Labour when it controls local authorities in the UK. Rather the focus is on the problem that such control poses for a party which has twice elected Corbyn as leader and is attempting to break with the direction taken by Labour under Blair and Brown. This article asks whether it is possible for a Corbyn-led Labour Party to make a difference to twenty-first century local government politics.","PeriodicalId":403400,"journal":{"name":"Soundings: a journal of politics and culture","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134130077","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Speaking about my last book, Out of Time: The Pleasures & Perils of Ageing, I was often asked what I’d write about next. Death? one person grinned. No, I said, perhaps the opposite. That’s when I started thinking that what I’m always trying to address, for myself as much as anyone else, are our attachments to life. What promotes this and creates our well-being, I thought, is not really individual pursuits, such as pumping muscles at the gym, it’s having friends and contacts; it’s making life meaningful, together with others. Confronting the ubiquitous neoliberal rationality, endorsing only endless competitiveness individual or corporate we need to hold on to alternative ways of connecting with each other. Surely it is mainly our ties to others that make life worth living. This makes the work some people are doing around the notion of ‘the commons’ so important the idea that we need shared spaces, quite outside the commercial arena, for us to be together, if only to ponder what life is about.","PeriodicalId":403400,"journal":{"name":"Soundings: a journal of politics and culture","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122494603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence the rise of 'libertarian authoritarianism', a novel political formation that is an inadvertent effect of neoliberal rationality. In this context Trump and other right-wing populist forces can be seen as part of a further reconfguration of neoliberalism. White identity politics and male identity politics play a key role within this. In the face of this persistence and resilience of neoliberalism, we need, not hope, but 'grit, responsibility and determination'. Small acts of local resistance have an important role to play here, and so too does political theory.","PeriodicalId":403400,"journal":{"name":"Soundings: a journal of politics and culture","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114732704","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Bowie was already in the news that year: the V&A Museum’s David Bowie is exhibition presented an opportunity to look back at the mad spectrum of his career up to that point. And for many people he had always been a figure of significance. He was admired as someone who was able to play with and subvert genre, language and gender, and as someone who had creatively reinvented himself so many times, in so many ways. Someone who challenged the mainstream, became the mainstream, then challenged it again, flirting always with different styles and techniques. John and Alex decided it would be great fun to hold a poetry and karaoke night in honour of David Bowie, with commissioned poems on Bowie albums, followed by intoxicated singing. Costume was encouraged.","PeriodicalId":403400,"journal":{"name":"Soundings: a journal of politics and culture","volume":"117 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115768239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This was nowhere the case more than in Scotland, where the outcome indicates the birth of a three-party system. The major headline was the SNP losing its hegemonic status, going down from fifty-six MPs to ‘only’ thirty-five (though this is still a majority of Scotland’s fifty-nine seats). This setback was compounded by the loss of nearly 500,000 votes: the total SNP vote fell from over 1.45 million to under 980,000. This is partly explained by a decline in turnout, from 71 per cent in 2015 to 66 per cent in 2017. The Tories gained over 320,000 votes and increased their number of seats from one to thirteen. On the other hand, the number of votes for the Labour Party only increased by around 10,000, to a total of 717,000, but this secured them an additional six seats.","PeriodicalId":403400,"journal":{"name":"Soundings: a journal of politics and culture","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114677258","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Intersectional feminists recognise race, class, gender, sexuality, disability and legal status as interlocking systems of oppression, and pay attention to the ways in which these particular intersections generate agency and solidarity for different kinds of women. Populism, on the other hand, is a political strategy that seeks to articulate popular grievances in a way that can unify a ‘sovereign people’ against corrupt and self-serving political, economic and cultural elites. It is less interested in recognising difference within its construction of the people.","PeriodicalId":403400,"journal":{"name":"Soundings: a journal of politics and culture","volume":"231 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132828355","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
