This is a unique generator where an induction machine (IM) provides the controlled excitation to the field of a synchronous machine (SM) to regulate it's terminal voltage. Both the machines are put together in the same frame. Therefore, the stator and rotor accommodate two windings each. For the proposed machine, two windings need to be of different number of poles to earn magnetic decoupling. For this work, the synchronous and induction machines are wound for 2 and 6 poles respectively. The operation of IM is controlled to generate high frequency rotor current that can be rectified using a rotating rectifier. This paper first investigates the performance of the synchronous machine when the induction machine operates in motoring, generating and plugging modes. Following this, the plugging mode operation of IM is further exploited for satisfactory performance of the SM. Extensive simulations are carried out using MATLAB/Simulink. Experimental results are provided from a laboratory prototype to validate the principle of operation of the proposed generator.","PeriodicalId":403350,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Students’ Technology Symposium (TechSym)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114653063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recognition of hand-written characters can be done either On-line or Offline. Not much substantial work has been published in the past on the development of hand-written character recognition (HWCR) systems for Telugu text. However none of them give 100% accuracy in recognition of Telugu characters. Therefore, it is an area of ongoing research. Our effort is intended to improve the accuracy in Telugu character recognition. This motivated us to undertake this work. Zonal based feature extraction is used in the present proposed work. We presented two methods for this purpose. First method is based on Genetic Algorithm and uses adaptive zoning topology with extracted geometric features. In second method, zoning is done in static way and uses distance, density based features. In both the contexts, we use K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) algorithm for classification purpose. The character image is divided into predefined number of zones and features of all the zones in the image form a feature vector which is used in classification phase of hand-written character recognition. Using first method we obtained accuracies of 100 percent and 82.4 percent for 11 and 50 symbols respectively. Using second method we obtained accuracies of 100 percent and 88.8 percent for 11 and 50 symbols respectively.","PeriodicalId":403350,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Students’ Technology Symposium (TechSym)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121964537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is a very challenging task as the given image may be affected by different types of distortions. One of the most common distortions is image blurring. In this paper, we propose a no-reference image quality assessment algorithm to assess the quality of images corrupted by blurring in Discrete Cosine Transform domain. The proposed algorithm works faster than the state of the art algorithms for the same problem, and the score computed by the algorithm has more correlation with the human opinion score than existing methods which means that the proposed image sharpness measure mimicks the human visual system closely.","PeriodicalId":403350,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Students’ Technology Symposium (TechSym)","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122049163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

L — type, Γ — type and Π — type membership functions are considered in fuzzification process of input and output variables. Controller modeling is done via algebraic product AND operator-maximum OR operator-Height (Ht) defuzzification process combination. The new model obtained in this manner turns out to be nonlinear, and its properties are studied.","PeriodicalId":403350,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Students’ Technology Symposium (TechSym)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129106999","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The gains of Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller in STATCOM are being optimized by heuristic technique based on Particle swarm optimization (PSO). Further, Bacterial Foraging Optimization (BFO) as an alternative heuristic method is also applied to select optimal gains of PID controller. The performance of STATCOM with the above soft-computing techniques are studied and compared with the conventional PID controller under various scenarios. The simulation results are accompanied with performance indices based quantitative analysis. The analysis clearly signifies the robustness of the new scheme in terms of stability and voltage regulation when compared with conventional PID.","PeriodicalId":403350,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Students’ Technology Symposium (TechSym)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126371976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using pass transistor logic in realizing D-flip-flop has resulted in higher gain, area reduction and higher maximum frequency for NL-PFD2. Reset delay and dead zone are also found to be reduced using simple structure. The necessity of reset action is eliminated in both the NL-PFDs as UP and DN signals are never allowed to reach logic high simultaneously and hence, blind zone is completely eliminated in both the cases. Nonlinear Phase-Voltage characteristics of PFD has been modeled using Fourier series and time response of PLL using state space technique and both have been validated by simulation in MATLAB and circuit simulation in Cadence. PLL built with the NL-PFDs are found to provide a lock time of 1.753 μs and reference spur of −56.7 dBc with 180 nm CMOS process while power dissipation in NL-PFD2 is observed to be only 0.27μW.","PeriodicalId":403350,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Students’ Technology Symposium (TechSym)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126506394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The 8-transistor highly stable SRAM counterpart of CAM cell contains six p-type and two n-type dual gate SB-CNTFETs where the searching network adds three more p-type transistors. The circuit compatible model of dual gate SB-CNTFET operates steadily at 0.5 V power supply. The design is implemented with Si-MOSFET, MOSFET-like CNTFET and DG SB-CNTFET. For the proposed low voltage SRAM based DG SB-CNTFET CAM cell, we have achieved 120× lesser power-delay-product (PDP) during read operation, 845× lesser PDP during write operation and 407× lesser PDP during search operation compared to similar design using Si-MOSFET. The DG SB-CNTFET based CAM also shows ∼2× less PDP during read-write-search operations as compared to the MOSFET-like CNTFET based CAM cell.","PeriodicalId":403350,"journal":{"name":"2016 IEEE Students’ Technology Symposium (TechSym)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116794097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
