Second, I will assess recent surveys reflecting European values and worldview. It is difficult to evaluate the European worldview because of the heightened pluralism and diversity. Europe is made up of many nations and ethnic groups, with different economic development levels, religious backgrounds, and philosophic perspectives. Median or average figures will no doubt obscure certain events and the context of social, economic, or religious changes in each European country; however, certain trends can be noticed even from combined statistics across Europe. The main source of data comes from the Eurobarometer, the official European Union survey organism of public opinion. The third part of the paper will summarize a series of documents published by the European Commission, entitled Futurium, which describes the future trends and goals of European societies envisioned by specialists in different areas. Finally, I will reflect on the impact such values and contexts and how they may impact the worldview of young European urbanites. My hope is that this analysis will indicate areas where ministers and missionaries could build their strategies.","PeriodicalId":402825,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Adventist Mission Studies","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114647052","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If this is to be done acceptably, the written and spoken language must be mastered and personal friendships formed with community members. Much damage has been done by Western missionaries arriving with preconceived ideas on evangelism taken from their home country and with an attitude of being holders of superior knowledge in many areas of thought beyond that held by the host culture. Catholic missionary activity has been on-going in Thailand since 1665, Protestants since 1828, and by Adventists since 1906 (Insom 2006:43; Carmody 2017:54). The early pioneers showed great energy and persistence and one cannot help but have great admiration for them. The experiences and successes recorded have been many and varied. The techniques adopted have included literature evangelism, evangelistic outreach efforts, healing ministries, health promotion, education (primary to tertiary), radio ministry, relief work, and other activities. The overall impact of the total mission effort by all denominations has been minimal with Christians representing an estimated 0.74-1.2 percent of the population (Carmody 2017:49; Christian Presence Map 2018).\"","PeriodicalId":402825,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Adventist Mission Studies","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116284695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Societal expectations, family roles and pressure, religious dogma, inherent systemic prejudice, misapprehension of what Christianity is, a parallel holy book that often contradicts the Bible, a works-based approach to salvation, an exclusivist selfunderstanding that replaces the concept of the biblical remnant with the Ummah (the community of Muslims), a generalized misapprehension of the essence of Islam by Westerners, a confusion (on the part of Christians and Muslims alike) between Western commercialism and true Christianity, an often corrupt and poorly representative church, radicalization of some elements in the Islamic community, and strong punitive measures for those who convert out of Islam are just some of the major barriers that discourage serious investigation by Muslims of the gospel of Jesus Christ as presented in the Scriptures. In spite of these challenges, there is a steady stream of conversions to Christ occurring from the ranks of those from a Muslim background. The numbers, although not a torrent, do represent an upsurge of individuals who are leaving the mosque and joining the church. Jeune Afrique, the French journal on Africa, estimated that in 2004, there were 500 converts to Christianity from Islam in Tunisia. They converted chiefly to three churches. A report on the website Islam al-Yawm estimated that in 2004 about 1,000 left Islam for Christianity in Morocco (Madany 2010). Al-Majalla, a journal estimated that there were at least 7,000 Christians in Morocco at that time. In 1992, according to estimates by the French Journal Le Monde, anywhere from 4,000 to 6,000 individuals converted from Islam to Christianity in Algeria. The numbers are not exact and one source said that the","PeriodicalId":402825,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Adventist Mission Studies","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124801005","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The esteemed Arab genealogist Ibn al-Kalbi (A.D. 737-818?) made popular the supposed genealogical link between Muhammad and Ishmael, largely through oral tradition. Whether this link is valid or not, clear and even older written records link the ancient nomadic tribes of northern Arabia with Ishmael, as we have noted above (Diorodus of Sicily, the book of Jubilees, Josephus, et al.). Arab genealogists generally trace the Arabians to two main ethnic stocks, the original Arabian Arabs from south Arabia, descended from Joktan (Gen 10:25-26), and the Arabicized Arabs from central and northern Arabia, descended from Ishmael. Other Arab genealogists suggest that the original stock of Arabs came from the northern part of the Arabian Peninsula (Maalouf 2003:44-46). In any case, the link between those known in the OT as “people of the East” and the Arabs of Islam is firmly upheld. Twelve references to Ishmael in the Qur’an and numerous post-Qur’anic Islamic traditions30 affirm the central place of Ishmael in Islam and the genealogical link between him and his ancestors to Muslims, whether by literal bloodline to Arab Muslims, or by theological and geo-cultural ties to Muslims world-wide (See Firestone 1990; Eph‘al 1976:225-235).\"","PeriodicalId":402825,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Adventist Mission Studies","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129411107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To speak and reflect on God is the most noble and encouraging endeavor. Understanding God in the way He has made Himself known to humanity stimulates the highest activity in which humans can be involved. This enterprise sheds light on who God is and what He is doing. The better we know Him, the more we can admire and follow Him. The most honorable privilege is, indeed, to know God personally, nurture an intimate relationship with Him, and study His stunning character of love. Cultivating His presence, closeness, grace, and guidance in everyday life is the most satisfying and rewarding experience, because it fills one’s heart with inner peace and joy. Everything meaningful in spiritual life flows from fostering this practical knowledge and understanding of God. However, a discussion with Muslims about God, especially the Triune God, can be quite painful, because the strongest Islamic polemic against Christianity focuses on the doctrine of the Trinity. They have a different perception of God and like to stress that Christians believe in three gods (tri-theism). They plainly state in their publications and conversations that they do not believe in the Trinity, denying the divinity of Jesus Christ, or that Jesus is the Son of God. They consider Jesus only to be a Prophet (Qur’an 3:84; 5:46). They also refuse to believe in the crucifixion of Jesus (Qur’an 4:157), but affirm His resurrection and ascension into heaven (Qur’an 3:55; 4:158; 5:117; 19:33). In support of their stand against the Trinity, Muslims quote the Qur’ an. The heaviest quotations in this regard are the following two: (1) “Do not say ‘Three.’ Refrain; most charitable is it for you; surely Allah is only One God” (Qur’an 4:171); (2) “They do blas-","PeriodicalId":402825,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Adventist Mission Studies","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128741558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this reason, you will not find in it different perspectives about witchcraft and references to what this or that author says. Rather this work reflects what I have seen and experienced about witchcraft in Africa and what attracts people to it. More specifically, the paper explores the following questions: What are the definitions of the occult and witchcraft? Why are people attracted to witchcraft, in spite of strong biblical teaching against it? What kind of people are most attracted to witchcraft? What are the fundamental reasons why people seek help from witches? Why are people from Africa in particular attracted to witches? Why are people, including Christians, turning to witchcraft for solutions to their daily challenges of life? In 2005 eleven bodies were taken to a mortuary in a small town in Zambia after a 22-wheeler truck ran over them. When the bodies were identified, we learned that three of those were Adventists. It is not because they were Adventists that caught my attention, rather it was what was found on their dead bodies. When they were undressed, it was discovered that all three were wearing pieces of animal skins inside their outer clothes that were wrapped around their waists with some small horns hanging around those pieces of skins. After enquiring from those who lived in the area what this was all about, I was told that all three of these young men were businessmen who had turned to witches from Tanzania in seeking power to make wealth. All three were involved in very thriving businesses. The question that bothered me was why these, apparently faithful Adventists, were attracted to and even had taken to magic to make wealth. In another story an Adventist woman whose six daughters died within a period of three years decided not only to find out why her daughters had died, but also to seek protection from witches for her life and that of her","PeriodicalId":402825,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Adventist Mission Studies","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128191283","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
