The known members of the School were: Quintus Sextius the Elder, founding father of the School, Sextius Niger, Quintus' son, who became scholarch of the School after his father's death, Sotion, Papirius Fabianus (both teachers of Seneca the Younger), Crassicius Pasicles, a grammarian, and Celsius Cornelius, an expert doctor. The School followed the footsteps of the Hellenistic schools, and similar to these, t he pursuit of happiness was its purpose. T he school of the Sextii had taken to heart that part of the philosophy called physical, characterizing itself mainly as a philosophical-medical school, blending in its philosophy Pythagorean, Platonic, Cynic, and Stoic elements. Moli","doi":"10.7408/EPKN.V4I1.71","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7408/EPKN.V4I1.71","url":null,"abstract":"After the Fall of the Roman Empire, where it covered prominently many aspects of a cultivated citizen's life, the platonic philosophical Tradition was practically dismissed from the centre of european spiritual life and survived only in restricted corners of the new scenario designed by the barbaric invasions. This lack was deepened after 1000 A. D. when the importance of Plato's thought in Theology was replaced by the new spiritualized access which could be granted via the arabic culture to the texts of Aristotle. In many cases, the parts of the platonic tradition which persisted as a stable component of the late medieval theological Thought were those more strictly connected to the problem of the relation among the various principles which Plato posed at the basis of his cosmo-theological construction in dialectical Dialogues such as Parmenides , Philebus , Sophist and Timaeus . Trinitarian Thought as well as Christian notion of Transcendence were always been dependent on concepts which could scarcely doubted to be of platonic origin. Yet the platonic source remained for many years as well as hidden in the developing of the doctrinal System of Christianity. In particular the notion of “Transcendence” held by the so-called via negativa was never accepted as the official version of the dogma, never ceasing to encounter new opposition. This paper aims at reconstructing the reasons for that kind of incompatibility which has always been sensed by theologians between some radical metaphysical thesis developed in Platonism and the theoretical structure of Christian Thought. The perspective drafted in this paper suggests that some answers could be found in the very sense of “Tradition” ( diadoche ) adopted by Platonists as a movement of approaching to a Truth in which Christianity and Platonism are only provisional moments and in the logical structure of the via negativa as a device to conquer the (theo)logical space by removing every transcendental determination including those which should define Christian God: The One, The Good, The True. I've associated some of my works and reflections on the practice which produced them, to words expressed in quotes from a variety of texts by Nancy, such as The Muses, Corpus , Noli me tangere and others. All is structured in four chapters, imaginary brushstrokes, dedicated to Nancy. Each one revolves around one or two artworks, which are shown in photograph. In each, the artist's and the philosopher's words follow one another merging into a dialogue. The titles of the four chapters reflect the two perspectives, defining distinct meeting points, where I've made his words lean towards my works as if they spoke for me and my feelings. Jean-Luc Nancy considers that we are exposed to the necessity of elaborating a new ontology, one of bodies which give place, room and time to existence. That is why we must examine the notions of “body”, of “place”, of “event of skin” and “pictural art” ( “art of bodies” which confronts us with the difference between “carnation” and “incarnation”). Our bodies are exposed and are listening to each other in an ceaseless beat, a throb of life as “ differance ”. A parabolic thinking does not think through parables but is a thinking that unfolds what he called “the thought of the parable” as a thinking in-the-near-of ( aupres de ). Considering that “the thought of the parable” is discussed by Nancy in some references to Rembrandt’s painting and hence from out of his thinking in-the-near-of-painting, a short reflection on the “parabolic painting” of Rembrandt is also addressed. In the thought of the parable, the thinking difference (difference pensive) between the thinking and the thought appears, showing the immensity of the “in-the-near-of” as the very gerundive of being, as the is-being of being. Though Jean-Luc Nancy’s work has never focused on the theme of fear, we think that his thought is endowed with powerful resources for the deconstruction of this mighty motive of thought, which keeps it in a reactive, defensive dimension, that is a dimension of closure. Through three short notes we will explore Nancy’s approaches to as many spheres of existence, such as politics, the arts, the theological, in which he finds out as many occasions and strategies of disclosure to the nothing of sense. In this paper we try to show how his philosophical concept can be perceived as an attempt to clear the way of the possible «exit» from nihilism – that does not already seek its «overcoming». This «exit» is linked to the possibility of a paradigm shift of the «evaluation» way: it is not about the values reactivation or to introduce a new system of the differential values, but the affirmation of an «absolute» and immeasurable value. To capture an evaluation meaning that gives to each assessing act the possibility of not being measured with given systems. Therefore, Nancy tries to sketch out a «new shape of the truth», exposing us to a new experience of the assessing act and to a rethinking of the categories of autonomy and heteronomy through an «imperative» that is less linked with the practice and the effect of an imposition than with an ontological framework .
